Many drummers miss the fact that the paradiddle is made up of two key components, each of which can be learned separately. Breaking down this simple rudiment makes mastering it much easier. We all want to learn the paradiddle so that we can figure out how to orchestrate it around the kit or build cool grooves out of it. That’s all good… but sometimes getting the paradiddle going just on the snare is a challenge. Today we’re breaking it down in slow motion, demonstrating what the hands, wrists, and fingers are doing at 5 different tempos. If you’re struggling with your paradiddles, go back and review the lesson on doubles we did two weeks ago. Make sure that your doubles are solid before you really tackle paradiddles. These tips today should really get you going with improving this rudiment, though, so enjoy!

Play an upstroke on the second note, you’re welcome.

no you cannot play upstroke for the second note on diddle because there's a third one after the diddle and before raising the hand for accent on first 16th. so it's basically second 16th note of the paradiddle played as upstroke. you're welcome

Great tips!! The tip about transitioning from accenting with the Left hand to Right while doing the paradiddle is helping me SO MUCH!!! Focusing on my weak hand and also starting the rudiment with the weak hand then switching works wonders!!

How about breaking down the the count? 1e+d 2e+d 3e+d 4e+d, 4/4.
Lately I've been more focused on feel between 95bpm - 150bpm, breaking them into groups of 3, 5, 6, 7, or 2.
I was looking forward to listening how you pull it off on a live SD, and accenting around the kit. I know, I'm asking a lot. Or, the relationship of '+d' to the BD with accents on the kit.
Lately I've also been focusing on forward and back fulcrums, the relaxation of fingers and forearms.

Paradiddles are just a gallop played on one hand, with a 16th note in between the 8th note, which turns into a 16th when playing it all together, and the 2 16th notes the leading hand plays, played by the other hand to make 4 16th notes in a row?

I love how I can "hear" the sticks striking the head in slow motion... THOOM THOOM THOOM-BOOM!
Watching this slow motion makes me think if I lift my hand for the second doubles. I think I raise my hand high for the accent on the first strike with the hand, then for the double I don't lift the hand much, so the rebound is smaller. But my real problem is the double from my left hand, my right is ok for a beginner I guess.
Try leading your exercises with your left hand for a week, do your singles and doubles but always lead with left so it gets used to accenting and being the strong hand. Also I found doing doubles but accent the second note of each double really helps to gain control and power on the left hand. Start slow, controlled, accurate and deliberate 🤘
If you are just starting with rudiments, the paradiddle is much easier after a small amount of mental consideration. It is really just two singles and a double and alternating your lead hand. You can consider it as RLRR followed by LRLL or it’s inversion leading with the left. Another way to consider a paradiddle is that it is an alternating pattern consisting of two singles and a double followed by the inversion of the same pattern. To get started count the notes, the third and fourth note are your double and are followed by the opposing hand essentially inverting the pattern for the second half. This way of counting opens up the rhythm you are trying to create, the 3 and the 4 note are always a double and the next single is in the open hand. That first barrier of understanding the pattern is the hardest part, speed comes quickly after that and timing improves with familiarity. The next challenge in any rudiment is accenting or using dynamics appropriately, gain confidence in rudiments and your playing will go to a new level guaranteed.
I need help with a weird hand pattern in my eighth grade solo and ensemble. It goes like this
Right hand Flam tap left right Left hand Flam tap right left (all sixteenth notes) How do you play those faster?
Practice them slowly until you fully have it then speed it up to a moderate tempo... and play it at that speed for...20+ mins then play it at a faster tempo for another 20+ mins then play it at the tempo of the song for another 20+ mins... All this to internalize this rhythm its all muscle memory.... Also Use a metronome through the whole process ✊🏾🤘🏾✊🏾

Stephen I’m struggling with wondering if trying to learn these using both Traditional and Match grip is a bad idea ?
Will it mess with my muscle memory ?
I’m better at them with match but prefer generally to use trad especially on my snare.
I’m a big Gene Krupa nut and notice GK would use trad on snare and match on floor tom’s do this is what I copied.

Isn't it more likely that someone isn't dragging/rushing, but their dynamic aren't quite on point? Like, not being able to completely turn off the accent and make it sound like a consistent pattern of singles, or not being able to play with an accent and keep the 3 ghost-notes consistent?

It's quite common for people to try and do doubles faster than they can control and tension etc leads to dragging and rushing, but your point is also valid. The two go hand in hand
