My first introduction to Japanese Swordsmanship, as a 12 year old, was Katori Shinto Ryu (unfortunately, not in person). I am now 55, have experienced a few 'schools/Ryu', and have been rewarded by the training. I still maintain 'Katori...' as the pinnacle of excellence. I can but dream...
It's still art. And Ritsuke Otake would use art. And I would use art. And you wouldn't understand that its art. Because you don't have the same definition of art as I do. Which means I am right.
Hao Chao Tsi Minh "It's still art." No it is the oldest japanese martial art this is a fact you should do your research before you open your mouth. " And you wouldn't understand that its art." Yeah I am such a dumb westener right, good thing I have spent a lot of time with him at the Katori-jingū. Stop confusing words my dear friend. It is a practical martial art and yes it contains artish concepts but it still is a practical guide to killing people. Educate yourself before you talk about stuff you clearly have no knowledge about thank you.
I love how they battle for the center. That's what the secret was, control the center and deal a devastating strike. For those who don't study a samurai based art, what these guys are doing is coming down with strikes designed to take the center of the opponent. The more advanced/experienced swordsman will take center and deflect the opponent's sword just enough (unnoticeable in video) away from center mass that if he was to run the sword straight in, it would miss. You want the tip of your sword to point at center mass while deflecting your opponent's sword tip away from your center mass. Takes A LOT of skill and years of practice.
all it's about the Kenjutsu style, in Niten Ichi Ryu Miyamoto Musashi talk about the high position in the battle field, trying to locate the opponents in a line, not all around yourself, if you have this line you will fight with one o two opponents at the same time, but if you are in the center all the opponents can kill to you at the same time, in the video the man is not looking for the center, he was in the center when the fight it's starting, this that i think only
José Luis Morales Undurraga Otake Sensei is a very formidable master! He's one of few great master in Japan today! If you have any questions or concerns about the Ryu contact the Shinbukan Dojo!
albert thanks a lot, i am in Chile, i cant practice for 3 years because i will have work in the day and university in the evening and night, but i love Katori Shinto Ryu and when i have time again, i will try to contact the dojo, i was trainning Hyoho niten Ichi ryu and Suio Ryu for a few years, thanks for your message, i really apreciate it!
Travelling to Japan won’t really do much except a good holiday and a chance to learn the lingo and try the good food. There are Thanks to the ease of modern travel and Social Media networks there are Wester instructors now that are just as good. Here is a tip. Whenever you get a Teacher politely ask to see their System License and their Teaching License any real teacher will gladly show their credentials. This is how you know they’re legit. 😂 I bet you didn’t think it was that easy. Anyway all the best with your sword travels
I study another style of Japanese swordsmanship, but I believe wrist attacks are very common. It is one of the more vulnerable parts protected by the traditional Japanese armor.
I have only been able to incorporate minor details of this technique into my own. Beyond my comprehension for the most part, but climbing the mountains for sure though!
What is that at 4:00? He lets his hand off the hilt. I can't tell if it's part of a move he was already doing, or whether the other sword had gotten in under his hands.
As he goes for the neck, the other parson tries to cut his right wrest from the bottom so he lets go his hand off to avoid to get cut. You see this movement everywhere in this video if you look closely.
This is not sparring this is Kata, it teaches the fundamental cuts and moves. But the real core is hidden and you learn it very late, so if someone from another school sees the Kata he doesn't really know what to expect in a fight against a TSKSR member.
Looking at this style it seems very flashy and acrobatic compared to ZKR Iaido. It is interesting to compare it to other styles. This styles "noto" and means of removing blood is different from what I learned. Very fascinating.
kata = martial art form or a set of moves predetermined. One you might know of is the "draw sword and slash at opponent's temple or throat, deblood the blade, then reshealth." So in the video, all of the kata/forms look prearranged because they are, they are forms practiced over and over again to engrain muscle memory. And just extra info., but the shinto ryu kata are forms that subliminally teach students lethal hits.
The screaming (or "kiai" if you prefere the japanese word) has nothing to do with "do" or "jutsu". "Do" simply means "way and "jutsu" means technique. The reason you don't "scream" in Muso Shinden Ryu is because the ones who created that style of iaido didn't use kiai. Look at kendo. It is a "do". And they scream, a lot.
Soy un aficionado al conocimiento marcial, es un vídeo simple mente fantástico.

its really good to see a great master performing a magnificent kata..
listen.... no effort , no bokutou power clunk just glance, so fluid- just art... this is the best.
This has nothing to do with art, this is serious practical combat kenjutsu.
Yeah, art.
Hao Chao Tsi Minh
No, this is kata the real knowledge is hidden.

Yes, you do!
Kotegiri (wrist cut) is one of the most used attacks (as you call it) in Koryu Kenjutsu and Batojutsu schools.

Wow, I'm taking a class that teaches kendo and katori shinto ryu. I hope to travel to Japan and learn the real thing
Even if it’s not in Japan it’s still the real thing. Also it’s nice to see that some people still study sword arts

너무 좋네. 마음이 정화되는 듯. Their movements make me pleased.
AHHhhhhhh. Gomen.
Are there many moves that involve such? Attacking the wrist isn't something I've seen alot of.
I'm currently learning katori shinto ryu.
11:33 Happo Ken is beautiful and deadly.

Does he strike him in the hand at 3:58?
Robert Trondsen he does, but the opponent removes his hand from the tsuka - it misses.

There is nothing at all flashy or acrobatic about Katori Shinto Ryu. Every move has a purpose. There are not wasted or flashy movements.

chocolatedumdum2 excuse my ignorance but what exactly does that mean.

chocolatedumdum2 ah I undestand. is that how issao machii cut the speeding pellet in half, by the speed built through muscle memory and training?

I wish I could "scream" while practising Muso Shinden Ryu :p But it's not in the spirit of "do" when it is in "jutsu", I suppose.
