- My first long haul flight was special! Not only because of the very nice Delta's crew service but also because I was supposed to fly on a A330-323 but it was replaced by the "Queen of the skies" the Boeing 747, my favourite!

Outstanding Video footage of this beautiful Boeing 747 jumbo jet, the sound brought tears to my eyes, i definitely remember being a passenger in one these planes from New York to Brussels and to Kinshasa. People that never flew in a Boeing 747 will never know how great these planes were. Moving forward the world awaits the new Boeing 777X.

I've flown on a Delta Boeing 777 and 747. I must say aside from my height proving to be an issue, the planes are amazing. Entertainment is plentiful and a 16 hour flight didn't feel so bad at all. Great pilots with Delta.

Stefano, If this was your first trip to the US, I hope you had a great time and return again. My wife and I flew to Rome back in 2012 from Atlanta and back home on the same route you took to JFK. It was a long trip each way, but thank goodness for free beer and movies! It's hard for me to sleep on a plane..
My first long haul was from LAX to Japan back in the 80s when I was in the military I can't remember, but it must have been a 15 plus hour flight and it was on a 747 charter jet. I did a year there and when the plane landed back in the US, everyone clapped. In fact a lot of Americans do this..not because of a bad flight, but just glad to be back home. I am trying to get my wife to go back to Rome soon!
Thanks, and yes, I had! Unfortunately I haven't been back in the US since that day, but I really hope to come back soon. One day hoping to work there and buy a house :) I'm very happy you liked my city! Italy is beautiful but we have a lot of internal problems for examples with the government and institutions, then there are a lot of things that do not work as they should...

Awesome video! I remember riding a delta 747 from DTW to NGO. After a 2 hour layover I took the same plane from NGO to MNL

Wow! Very nice video. Thanks! I actually flew on KLM 747-400 from AMS to LAX last week and I had a great flight. I enjoy the flight. I haven't flew on the entire 747 for a decades. I enjoy the 747-400. I went to Switzerland to see my brother & his wife and the girls, as well. I just came back home from Switzerland last week. I was so extremely tired. Oh well! :(

The last new passenger 744 delivery was 2002 I believe. It was actually destined for Alitalia but went to Virgin instead.

I didn't know that Delta had 747s in their fleet. I remember when they had their old livery back in the 1980s and 1990s, their largest aircrafts seemed to be L1011s. I flew on one from Atlanta to London one summer (and back 2 weeks later of course) in the 90s. I never saw any Delta 747s. Not sure which aircrafts flew to Europe after 2000 because I never flew Delta there since (I did fly AA to London from Chicago). Were Delta 747s only made after 2000?

It's interesting that most aircraft will lift off about 30 seconds from powering up for the roll. This was true on the old propeller planes as well as the latest jets. High altitude airports are a different matter. I have flown extensively world-wide, and the longest take-off roll I had was from Mexico City (altitude 7,300 feet) to Merida in 1974 in a DC6. (four-engine prop)
We rolled for almost TWO minutes. The aircraft slowly began to lift, and the pilot retracted the landing gear immediately. I don't think it rose much higher! Quite an experience.
Crazy to see this very plane (N664US) was destroyed from a hailstorm. Luckily no one was severely injured, but the plane had to be sent to the desert after the flight landed in Korea.
On a lighter note, great video footage and flight report! You are very lucky to have flown on the classic "Queen of the Skies" before DL retires it...

The 747 is truly the queen of the skies. I was lucky enough to fly on one owned by Air France, before they were retired. Great video! Those Delta 747s are some of the oldest flying of the type because the launch airline for the 744 was Northwest Orient :D
al380boy Delta 744s will now retire at the end of 2017 :(

A very nice video. The first time I flew on a Delta 747 was in the summer of 1973, a -200 model from London Heathrow to Washington Dulles. It was a Pam Am-Delta interchange, with Pan Am operating the Delta 747 on the transatlantic segment and a Delta crew continuing on to Atlanta. I remember being put out because the Delta aircraft was so utterly "plain Jane," without even a movie much less an audio system, both of which were fairly common then. It was seven hours of utter boredom. From this video, I would say that Delta's in-flight entertainment has improved considerably since 1973, but not necessarily their meals.
What a great surprise you had! I really miss flying on the 747 a lot, especially on Singapore Airlines' ones! I grew up flying on their 747s, and up to now I still miss them sooooo much!

At 20:51 the plane seems to lift off then looses lift all of sudden and then the wheels gently rolls on the runway for a second then lift off again.

She is really unmatched. On a smaller scale, the long forgotten DC-10 was also very beautiful as a three-motor aircraft. Splendid and elegant line (but not the safest airplaine in the world.)

Nice flight Stefano. You were lucky that A330 was replaced with the Queen. I flew from Fiumicino to JFK on a 747-200 back in the 80's when TWA was going strong. In fact, Delta may have taken over their rights to Rome when they expanded their service to include international routes.
I flew to FCO from JFK on Pan Am in '83 and '84. I remember seeing the TWA 747s already parked having arrived before we did. They had remote parking (no gate) for Pan Am and TWA back then. Alitalia got the gates. I recall upon our arrival in June '84 at FCO the PA 747 I was on named "Clipper Beacon Light" ( a former AA 747) blew an engine when deploying reverse thrust. I was seated on the right hand side in Clipper Class and watched as #3 blew with a bang and a shaft of flame shot out the exhaust. I have no doubt the return flight back to JFK was canceled.

Complimenti Stefano! E' bellissimo. Io ho volato sulla stessa rotta varie volte, ma sempre con Alitalia (o con LH via Fra, o DL via Cdg). Però quei colori dopo il decollo, il Tirreno verde smeraldo, e l'avvicinamento al JFK, sono sempre gli stessi: quasi "familiari". Keep going!
