Clacton: Holidaying In England's Most Deprived Town 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

  • 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England, one of the world's richest nations. But not everyone gets to enjoy the benefits of being born here. Just 60 miles from the bright lights of London is Jaywick which is statistically the most deprived town in the nation. I visited with my friends ‪@BackpackerBen‬ and ‪@TimmyKarter‬ for a weekend by the beach. Join us!
Thanks to the staff at the Black Rock restaurant in Clacton who looked after us and the great people of Clacton and Jaywick.

In the 90's there was a nightclub on Clacton Pier called 'Oscars'. Once in a while they would open the pier for all night raves. Top House and DNB DJ's, PA's, you name it. The Prodigy played there in 92. Many global DJ's played sets there.
Blur played a gig on the Pier also and it was epic.
The town definitely struggles, but there are some good people there who stick a few of the important things together, so to speak.

I don't know how true that is about London councils using it as a dumping ground for undesirables. I wouldn't be surprised if there are people who end up there as nothing is available in London council housing.
Jaywick has an ongoing fight for a massive reinvestment program, but it's got so many issues it's very hard to sort out. I would not be surprised if the next government tightens up controls on the standards of privately owned social housing (which at the moment is a disaster) and a lot of those properties are either modernised or removed.

To be fair, we know our back yard better. But who's going to these kinds of seaside towns? Some right shitholes that were once beautiful. As a Scot, I have fond memories of Girvan and Stranraer. But I went down there recently and nothing's changed - they're frozen in time. And for the elderly that's fine but the young folk need change and new stuff to do. It's just too hard to come by in these places isn't it? And so, no one is going to them to visit.

Seriously though, very impressed with the compassionate way you presented Clacton and Jaywick. They are very representative of the deprived coastal communities up and down the UK, and it’s very sad.
Coming from Essex myself (and volunteering in Southend on Sea) I can see the scourge of the combination of drug crime and lack of funding…and its effects on the ordinary, decent people.

Expat from Denton, Manchester here, currently in living in Canada…you brought a tear to my eye. England will always be my home as my children are the first generation of my family line to make homes in the ‘new’ world. Once you leave, you can never go back, but you never quite fit in where you settle either. Travelling is great and will expand your view of humanity, but a sense of home and of belonging to a place can’t be overstated. Think long and hard before you abandon your home, think about staying and working hard to make it better…cheers and Happy Christmas.

I grew up as a kid in the 90’s in South Oxhey where characters like this were still around, It’s completely different nowadays. So it’s great to see a place where relatable people still exist. The way they talked, lived and drink is uncanny. Can of Stella and fag in the morning, getting ready for work/or most likely a visit to the job centre. Brilliant. You don’t get ‘em anymore.

Great content - Captivating and Engaging. 3 bits of new info: The Torbay area of Devon (Paignton, Torquay and Brixham), which is equally as deprived in parts is I believe, officially known as The English Riviera - which I think is because of the palm-style and Mediterranean trees and rocky crags that line the coast.
Piers were originally built for the paddle-steamers which came down from London, they were a form of landing port or jetty.
Finally, and boringly, if you look out from Clacton, you will see firstly the North Coast of Kent from the Isle of Sheppey eastwards to Margate. Then overseas, possibly a five mile stretch of France, from Dunkirk up to the border of Belgium and then entirety of Belgium. I do think your content has become better in the last three years....excellent

In recent years, Clacton has been having record levels of tourism; it can't be that forgotten. Jaywick's image is a red herring as it's a product of a housing policy. It was never a seaside resort; just developed to accommodate holidaymakers for a short time in the 1930s.
