  • I've been eyeing the Derwent Push Button Water Brushes for a while now. The push button seems like such a great idea. When I decided to teach my Sketchbook Habit online class( bit.ly/visualdiaryhabit ), I determined that I simply had to buy the brushes in order to be a good teacher. After all, what if a student asked me about them and I hadn't yet tried them? I was super excited when they arrived, but after trying them out, I have to say: meh.
I feel like the Sakura brush was superior in the areas of flow/release and dump. I was able to paint more evenly and for longer using the Sakura brush. So help me out here. What am I missing about these Derwent brushes?

I really like the push button because of the control I get. The brush itself can a lot of paint and the tip of the round brushes stays in a point. Also, you don't have to worry about the paint accidentally getting sucked into the barrel. Also I love that it holds so much water.

What button ? Some rubber diaphragm you squeeze lol

@ there's a button on the barrel that releases water

When you say above the push button.. do you mean the end closest to the brush tip? I’ve tried both and now I have water leaking from the bulb end.

I don't think you can go past the Sakura brushes, I have numerous brands but always go to the Sakura.

You can open the brush in two ways. Below and above the push button

I haven't tried many water brushes, but I like my Pentel quite a lot. I might try these, though. Question: what's that gorgeous blue that you use right after the pink? Thanks for your honest reviews.

I like the Pentel too, they’re soft to squeeze and I have 3 different tip sizes now. 😉

I wonder if comparing brand new brushes to a brush that is well used it's a fair comparison. Could it be that perhaps there is a breaking in period ? I would like to see you use them for a while and then do a comparison. Just wondering if there is a learning curve to these brushes and maybe they get better over time, just a thought. 😊

I don't think there is a breaking in period for water brushes. And what I don't like about them has nothing to do with tip feel or anything like that. It's the amount of water that comes through. And if that changes over time, that's actually a bad thing. Because it means the brushes aren't holding up.

Is there a significant difference between this push button version and the old one with black grip?

Yes the derwent don’t leak an it’s controlled. It’s the best water rush I ever used.

I'd actually much prefer to have more control over the amount of water my water brush dispenses. Not that I'm any great watercolorist, but I've definitely ruined the intended look of several different pieces because of a water splooge

Comparing it to the Sakura brush was helpful, thank you! Haven’t tried the Derwent brushes. They look very thick. I imagine it would feel like painting with a wide tip marker.

Near the tip is slender and feels perfect. Give them a change will ya? I love my set and worth every penny. They are not like a fat marker.

A lot of people don’t like water brushes because they can’t control the flow. So, ones that allow more water control will appeal to those people.

That would be me. I like the loose, arty look of watercolor but I really don't like big splats of water where I hadn't meant them to be

I feel like perhaps the derwent ones are designed to be more like a traditional brush? Each press of the button = dipping brush into a water bucket. Which could possibly appeal to the traditional watercolorist to have an option like a traditional brush but they don’t need to carry a water bottle around. Just speculating here, I’m not a watercolorist. Tfs!

I believe you. That sounds like a very good point.

The button isn't a button , it's a rubber tube that forces the water out with air, then when you let go it sucks air back in causes pressure issues and contaminates easily, nylon bristles don't retain water in the slightest or release it, the worst buy I ever made was these ,so bad I couldn't give them to somebody I had to put in the trash

I use a lot of different brands of waterbrush, and the only one I despise using is the Derwent push-button one. After I gently squeeze the "button," even if I swipe off the extra water before using the brush, it will suddenly drop down a whole bunch of water onto my work, without me pressing anything. It also leaks where the push-button area joins the reservoir.
I, like you, thought it would be a great idea to have a push-button waterbrush, but of the three different Derwent push-button waterbrushes I bought, not one of them is practical. My favourites have actually been the cheapos that come with paintboxes and the like. The Mont Marte cheapos are no good for me, but the Pentels are fantastic, as are the dollar store waterbrushes and generic art store brands. Who knew!
At this point, I run around with about a half-dozen waterbrushes when I'm out sketching, and will only use the Derwent push-button if every last one of the others is out of water. And then I curse it and have to mop up after it. I love pretty much all Derwent products, but this was wasted money for me, especially given the fact that they're not inexpensive. Sigh.

I have tried so many different waterbrushes, but I keep going back to my favorite! In fact, whenever I see them on sale, I buy one!(I currently have six!) You are right, though, my favorite is the one that best suits my style!❤️

You say you are not a watercolor artist and so any water brush won’t make you happy. Get a cup of water and return to regular brushes. Water rushes are for watercolor. 😮maybe they both start with water. You think? I can tell the way you use the brush you are not a watercolor artist.

Instead of adding more negativity to the world, could you have left a kind or helpful comment? You could have educated me. What am I missing about how great these waterbrushes are? Why do watercolor artists love them? How could I hold the brush differently to get a better result? Constructive feedback is a kindness. Your comment is a waste of time for both you and me.
