A water brush may not be the most exciting product to watch a review on, once you have used a water brush you have pretty much used them all? Well I think the Derwent Water Brush is the exception to that rule. In my opinion, this water brush design from Derwent is an amalgamation of at least two if not three of the best water brushes on the market, hence my enthusiasm to share this review with you all.
I know this particular water brush from Derwent has been around for a couple of years if not longer, and I have had this set for about a year or so give or take, so I apologise that I am only getting round to reviewing the product with you now. Nevertheless, I hope this review finds you all well and that you find the review helpful in someway.
I'd love to hear from you about your personal favourite water brush, or your worst and why, have you ever used a water brush and did you like the tip I included in this video as to another method for using a water brush? Leave your feedback in the comment section, as I always say, the comment section is the most important part of this channel in my opinion. It is all very well and good me uploading a review, but for artists considering a product to buy, being able to read all the various opinion in the comment section can often help the artists get a second and third opinion. It's also incredibly important to watch and listen to other reviewers and not just my reviews, again to help give you a balanced account.

Thanks for a great video, Harry. Very thorough and some good tips for everyone.
My tip;
You can fill them up with an ink eg Sketch ink by R & K, "Emma" in khaki is totally waterproof when dry. It is fast drying, and is for fountain pens. Great for left handers, as it dries in 3 seconds. You can thin it down for a wash. A lovely colour, it is my only colour I use in all my fountain pens now.
I haven't tried these Derwent ones, but I think they would be better than the ones I have.
I have made a product in a trial, so I can take a huge studio brush out for plein air without damaging it.
Glad you are back! How is your new studio going?

Hi Harry, I’ve not tried these yet but I do like the Tombow water brushes they seem to have pretty good water flow and not to wet unlike most of them. Good to see you.
You see this is why I love the comments section and you guys cause I didn’t even k ow TomBow had a water brush. I’m going to have to get hold of them and check them out, thank you so much.
Hullo Harry, good to see ya! I waited for a long time before I gave in and tried a water brush! I remember when I first tried synthetic brushes and they were, well, horrible! My first water brush was a supply from a Scrawlrbox! I found that the water brushes hold water in the handle and maintaining the paint load is my difficulty. You just have to be patient and work in layers. Accidentally lifting can be hard, but like everything else we just gotta practice! Thank you for sharing this sweet water brush video with us, have a wonderful day Harry!
While I don’t use water brushes often, I do reach for them when paired with aquarelle pencils and other water soluble mediums on the go. These brushes offer great control and have yet to leak in the almost two years I’ve had them. The bristle fibers also seem to be more durable than other brands I’ve tried so far (Kuretake, Pentel Japan, Tombow, etc.).
Thank you for the review. I was wondering about these. They cost a bit more here in Canada, but I can get them from Jackson's if needed. I don't use waterbrushes too much, so I may stick with my regular ones, but if I want to step up, I know these would be worth it. Using mineral spirits in them is an exceptional tip. I didn't think of that. Thank you for the useful review. I appreciate it so much. :) Question: If you only need a 'damp' brush - not wet - will they work? Some brushes keep dripping down into the bristles and I find that too much water is present at times. Can you control it more with these? Thanks in advance.
Good to see you Harry, great video! 👏👏👍👍😉😉
Brilliant review upload harry I’ve been looking at these and wondering wether to purchase .. I shall now go and purchase some .. so good to have you back tysmfs 🙏
Nice tip to use them for blending too.Thank you.
Hi my name is Richard from Toronto Ontario Canada , your views are great and I would not get anything without watching your program. I can see two of you while I watch as I can see you in another monitor. Keep up the fantastic job.
Great tip about putting OMS in a waterbrush!!! Thank you for another informative video.
I'm commenting before even watching but thank you for this review. Very up my alley-watercolor and Inktense pencils are my favorite. Need these!
Thank you! I needed to order brushes today 😁
Very helpful, would be great when out camping. Thanks so much
Does one brush fit inside the middle section of a watercolor closable palette?
Ive tried several brands, including these, and they all seem to leak water constantly. I really want to like them, but right now I'm not a fan.
I’ve wanted to try these but they are costly in my area. My favorite has been a Pentel Mini but I just got a set similar to the Derwent to play with: soft side buttons & so far it doesn’t leak and has excellent water control … so far.
I’d still like to try the Derwent for my use which is mainly with WC pencils & Graphitint also the Graphites …
Thanks for the review 😊
Have you tried them with inks instead of water? Im looking for a flat brush for Roman Capitals. 🤔
I have yet to find a water brush that I love. Also wondering if it’s possible to do dryer washes with these or are they “juicy” and drip all over the place?
PLEASE 🙏 do not skip the ads. I know the 8 min 🍎 and the get high on THC + CBD get tiresome (for me as I am not interested in either). Letting the ad run benefits the channel. I make sure I let the ad run completely for channels like Harry and Lindsay the Frugal Crafter because I have gained so much from their videos. Make some coffee or something during the commercials . Please help the creators that help us.🙂
I completely agree Harry! I do have trouble sitting through the 20 minute commercials! I can do the 3 to 5 minute ones fine but how do they expect anyone to watch a 45 minute commercial? I love my Dog but I am not going to switch my dog food no matter how great Dr. Marty’s food may be!
Yep I mute my phone and take a screen break
I watch them through any video. It doesn't bother me. I'm usually doing art work. So it gives me a break when they run. I can jump up run to the bathroom, get something to drink, etc!! So most of the time it's a good thing for me personally. Yeah what ever it takes to help the YT channel I'm subscribed to, it's what I'll do!☺️🙋❤️🔥🙏🕊️👍👋👋
Thanks Harry. I have a hate, hate relationship with water brushes. I have stength issues from nerve damage from neck injury and surgery. I don't squeeze enough and then too much . These with the button area being what looks like thinner material may be easier to more gently get the water flow. Thanks again for the review. I'll add them to my wish list to try. Though i have the portable pallet and it has two water cups either side of the pallet. Would be nice to take a different pallet outside though. Take care and hope the family are doing well.
i've been using water brushes for years, now , as I do quite a bit of urban sketching , almost daily.. I use the pentel brand and love it .. i am always looking for a decent square( flat / chisel) brush , so I might try out the Derwent one .. thanks, Harry.. Norakag, here 👍
Harry, I have a number of questions about these Derwent water brushes. I have found that Pentel and Caran d ache brushes lose their tips quite quickly, especially Caran d ache. Have you noticed that these brushes keep their tips for a long time? What is the rate that the water is dispensed when you are painting is it evenly, hit and miss, or drips? I noticed that there was a lot of water that came out when you went to clean the brush. Did you find that there was an overabundance of water if you squeezed the brush during painting? Thank you for the good information that you give in your reviews.
I have many different kinds of waterbrush, but the Derwent pushbutton waterbrushes are the ones I dislike the most. My favourites are the Pentels and, surprisingly, the ones that come with cheap paintboxes and the like. But I find that the Derwents not only drop too much water at once (often ruining a painting with an unexpected blob of water). Mine also tend to leak at the join between the barrel and the button. Mine are a couple of years old, so maybe they've since made improvements?
Thank you so much for sharing your experience it is so important that viewers of the review get a balanced opinion. I wonder if improvements have been made, I remember when I first seen them I wanted to get them but they were originally a silly price and so I passed. I have had this set in my procession for about a year I think or they're about but only opened and started using them a month or so before this review.
Ill ask at Derwent if they had a transition period where amendments had to be made, because all the things you mentioned are things I experience with other water brushes, except the Pentel, they are a really nice water brush, simple yet effective.
But thank you so much for sharing your experience I really do think it is so important for potential buyers of these products to get a full and balanced account of the product.
@@TheArtGearGuide Thanks, Harry! Your videos are always my go-to for information on art supplies, because they're so detailed and honest. I think they must have made improvements, because others I know had the same experience as I did with the Derwent waterbrushes, but again it was from when they were first introduced - and you're right, so expensive at the time! I paid $16.00 Canadian for just one, and that was on sale.
I do love Derwent products in general, so hopefully they've fixed the issues. They were only available one to a card when I bought mine, but I like the look of the set you got. Pentels are still my favourites, of course, although I like that the Derwents hold way more water. I always take them with me, just in case I run out of water in the others, haha!
Thanks again for your videos - there are so many of us out here who truly appreciate everything you do! 😊
I've got to try doing more water coloring. I've even got water color pencils! And don't use them enough. I've got a set of the water brushes, but can't remember what kind they are!🤷🤦🤣😂🤷🙋❤️🔥. Thanks for sharing Harry! Hope everything is going well with you and the family!🙋❤️🔥🙏🕊️
Oh cool. I was just looking at these the other day and was wondering if they were worth buying.
Thank you for the video. I was aware Derwent at updated their water brushes, but I didn't know in what way. These look really good. I currently have the Pentel because I like to squeeze the handle rather than press a button. Derwent's version seems to fit that bill too now. Are they sold individually? I don't see myself having much use for the smaller size brushes.
BTW, I also love the Bockingford paper; it's my favourite for watercolour, based on a good quality/price balance. You're the only person I've ever seen mention this paper, probably because it is a UK brand. I don't know if it is sold elsewhere.
I have sheets of this wonderful paper! I am in California USA. I have blocks too, it is a lovely surface.
@@mjpete27 Oh cool, so it is sold elsewhere. Thanks. It's just that I've never seen any other youtuber mention it, so I thought it might have limited availability.
Merci beaucoup
I Think its good to know, that we Can use OMS in Them.
I fill mine with India ink. FW and Golden high flow work great as well.
That is an awesome idea, I never thought of Indian ink, that would create and fantastic cheap alternative ink pen. Awesome idea
@@TheArtGearGuide especially since i use ink as my under painting for my color pencil and mixed media work
@@thunder2165 Would "Noodler's" ink work okay with waterbrushes? I was gifted a bottle for my birthday and have been tempted to fill one and do washes.
