After spending an entire year on this course I'd like to give a review for anyone interested. At first, I thought video lessons were a bit all over in my opinion. When I wanted to find an example of what transcription I was working on it took a while. A lot of what are in the transcriptions are not on video and I was a bit upset at this at first. However after about 3 months, I realized what he had done. He is literally just giving you the tools, and makes YOU put in the work. and I learned how much more beneficial this is to your playing. I ended up writing my own transcriptions, exploring all of this information in my own way. What really changed my playing the most was the polyrhythm's he has in this. Just a quick example would be playing inverted paradiddle's on the left hand and right foot, (in 4/4) with a pattern in 3, 5, or 7 on the ride cymbal over top of it. I still work on this concept after a year. You can write any beat you want and apply 5's or whatever over top of it. This also made me hear and write my drum parts completely different. I now hear all of these rhythms over top of 4/4 that i never thought were possible. I also started playing tons of polyrhthms naturally in my chops. It would just come out. I was switching note rates (16th notes, triplet, septuplets, etc.)throughout chops without even realizing it. Just autopilot. anyway, this completely changed the way I play drums and IM STILL WORKING ON THIS COURSE AFTER A YEAR. I'd say I haven't even gotten 50% through the course.(even though they are unlimited) and I've put at least a thousand hours into it. Get this course, thank me in a year.
I saw his clinic in Long Island, New York and the way the sound engineer made his drums sound was epic. You can feel the vibration in the bass and toms
Oh shoot saw the below comments. Can't wait to see the final product! Sounds great already. can't wait to shed tables of time for the coming weeks hehehe
watching it right now, ouh yeah Matt. I've actually been teaching similar concepts in the last years with my Time Trip drum clinics. If you guys are interested on my channel there are a couple of clips from my last 2 clinics at Berklee and at the MI. Dope job by the way, man
@@c.l.368 Metric Modulation and polyrhythm is a very similar concept, starting at 0:48 he goes through all kinds of different tempo feels while the click never changes.
@@thatlonzoguy Precisely, metric modulation would imply a click change. He's just doing polyrhythmic phrasings. If you've heard the track "Cognitive Contortions" by AAL, there's a lot of metric modulation going on there. Really, metric modulation is when a polyrhythm "becomes" the new click, if you get what I mean.
Lonnie Maynard actually there's really is no metric modulation in this entire piece. Lots of different groupings, but no modulation. I believe that he hits or implies the down beat in almost every bar. Great piece of art, keeping any sort of time at that tempo is impressive, keeping a steady beat for the same duration is even harder!
@@norskov Maybe my understanding of metric modulation is flawed or it's a semantics issue, either way I will look into it LOL. Regardless this style of drumming is very fun to do.
Tbqh, i’ve been more and more interested for you to just start a solo metal/fusion or just plain fusion side project Please, for the love of all your fans out there ..and f-for science, o-of course!
Well he made some music with a project called GEM. He and Joshua de la Victoria also put out an EP called Modern Value. Oh and he also made some music with Louis de Miuelle..i think the album is called Dual.
He's good but cmon this clip is far from what people are commenting about. Metric modulation, polyrhythms?. Hes just playing to a click and throwing in some things. I agree, hes really good with other clips and with aal but this isnt rocket science. I liked the go go groove in the beginning better. Id like to see him play some more groove in other situations.
I bought it and it's definitely more than just "cool little things" he's doing. He's turning quintuplets and septuplets into grooves and moving through even more variations of tuplets than that.
The real question is... can time develop a sense of Matt Garstka?
😮
Metronomes buy this course and listen to Matt to improve

The production level of this video is very impressive I must say.
the swung groove on the intro is just outstanding

Agree
One of the. I'd argue Brooks Wackerman and Matt Greiner are right up with him. But I might be biased. (not taking into account dead drummers)
Virgil Donati, Vinnie Colaiuta and Dave Weckl are still alive, brahh

metric modulation hype
Where? He's just doing quintuplets/septuplets here and there... No modulation, just polyrhythms.

honestly, I don't think the metronome was ready.
It's so fckin hard to buy it by PayPal, because I'm live in Russia....
Здравствуй, на сайте можно без лишних заморочек взять с помощью почти любой карты: Visa, MasterCard и так далее.
I think it should've been called "Tempting Time". But that's just me :)
I've now got that intro guitar lick going through my head, thanks lol
"How to control time"
Ooooouuwwwwh u make me really sick now eeeeeeargh 😂😂
