For so long, every video I released you guys commented "invite Matt Garstka to do a lesson"... So I hope that you're all happy now :) It was an awesome lesson with some unbelievable drumming. Enjoy!
Drumeo, I am so happy that you have gotten Matt Garstka here. I've posted his name and Matt Halpern's so many times. Thank you so much. You're amazing. Can't thank you enough.
my dad, who played jazz drums starting in the end of the 40's is 82 this year (2018.) and even through his dementia, everytime i play an animals as leaders album, he always comments on how good this drummer is. this band is going to be considered "classical," music after their time has passed.
I know you posted this about 5 years ago but, if you are willing to share, I’d be curious on what kind of dementia? I ask this because my dad was diagnosed with FTD a few years ago and he played a huge role in my “heavier” music tastes and I hope to be able to have a similar experience down the road.
I have noticed a lot of comments where people aren't quite understanding what he is saying. I'm not a know it all and I'm not listing out the bullet points that I got from this lesson to be a jerk, but sometimes when I end up taking notes during these video lessons, and simplify what they say, it becomes more obvious. 1. Stop playing when a "pothole" or mistake arises. So when you feel yourself make a mistake, don't keep playing. Address the issue until it becomes natural and clean. 2. Slow it down. Speed isn't everything. If you can nail it slow (which is more difficult than fast) then speeding it back back up after learning it slow will help it to make more sense. 3. Repetition. Play a groove for a couple of measures, and then slowly add to it. Play each addition to the original groove another couple of measures before adding the next. 4. Read music. Muscle memory will only take you so far. By being able to see each note and time signature on paper will help to dissect the exact layout of the groove and see where you may be missing something. 5. Plan practices. Go into each day already knowing what you will be working on when you get the chance to sit down at the kit. Being scatter brained and going on a whim won't help you to progress in distinct areas. Thank Matt Garstka for the awesome lesson! I'm subscribing to your site!
youreonlyhuman I took notes to this lesson too! It was the first Drumeo lesson that I was able to catch live and all the way through, so it's the first time I took notes. This is probably the best lesson to take notes to because it was all talking. I sat at my kit, but didn't touch it at all!
+DRUMMINGANDDRIFTING sure, i just wanted to do a joke given the topic of the video. But i myself (and i guess 99% of people) could type slower and better. cheers.
+youreonlyhuman nice one, especially number 2. Ive played drums for 11 years and when ppl that dont play drums tell me "woha! this guy he can play so fucking fast" i always go, well- its not hard to play fast ,its hard to play slowly. and thats really it! :D
I know there's a lot of people on here that are saying that they're not happy that he did a lot of digressing and "rambling"...I thought this too when I first saw this video. However, I think we need to realize how great of a musician Matt really is, and with that doesn't just come with a bunch of licks and "quicktips" to rip off of note for note with none of your own creativity... As shown in Matt's speech; it comes with DEEP thought, ideology, and philosophy! I think because of the convenience of RUclips, some of us (myself included) can get easily distracted from that. For Instance..he pokes a bit of light fun at that sort of thing @23:20 lmao! This is a life long journey my friends! Hang on to every piece of Musical knowledge you come across! Because whether it's licks or just talking about music and drums, every little thing helps!
You're spot on, I want to devour music, drums specifically. Every technique, every quick tip or hack, every "Oh, well I actually do it *this* way", every "do you know xyz?", every jam session with new people, every time you play way out of your comfort zone, skillwise or stilistically... It's a mindset and indeed a life long journey.
I was so happy seeing Matt talking more than playing. Playing doesn't give you shit in short video lessons like this, it only serves to pump muscles and entertain you, moving away from the important aspect of it "educating you". Better to hear concepts and letting you know whats going on in these monsters heads. wayyy more beneficial to you.

This dude is a mad scientist/genius. Like completely submerged into the deep math behind the creation of rudiments. Debunking them and creating extra doors for himself.
dude, what kind of deep math are you talking about? the math behind all of this is first grade max, like most muscial instruments. It's just fractions and some divisions and that'ts more or less it. Complicated to play? yes. Complicated in terms of math? not really....I could explain these concepts to a smart first grader and he would understand
as i tried to point out, you don't need to be smart for this stuff. but it seems even that went over your head so, obviously, there are exceptions to the rule @@360.Tapestry
Matt Garstka has to be one of my absolute favorite drummers. I love the way he uses linear drumming, limb independence, ghost notes and lots of other crazy techniques that he implements into his music. I think my favorite attribute i like from his drumming is play of beat and off timing and it sounds so good and then he is able to get right back on time. That is absolutely amazing to me. He is another drummer that has inspired me to continue drumming!!! Keep it up man i love your work!!!

Thank you once again Drumeo (and Jared Falk of course) for a superb interview and fascinating insight into this great drummer! I've now watched this whole video twice :) Rob
Not only did you bring one of my all time favorite drummers on for a lesson but you also got him to perform my favorite song from his band! Bravo, Drumeo! I commend you. The drummers, the teaching, the consistency of the content; all fantastic. Thank you for years of helping me develop my playing.
Matt makes everything he plays look so easy! He clearly knows what he's doing.

Guys, you're makinhg history, both of you Jared and Matt. This video is a moment unique that will last in our memories till the end of our days. Thank you some much for sharing this.
I know it would be very hard to get him, but it would be the most amazing day of my life if I saw on my subscriptions box a lesson with the legend, CARTER BEAUFORD!!!!!!!!!

I do so much of what he has said: slow down, repetition, know note values, and plan what you are going to do for practice sessions. I keep a notebook of what I do, BPM for different parts, etc. My practice is two hours max a day (one in AM, one in PM).

I'm late to the Matt Garstka party but I'm glad I finally made it! WOW! WOW! WOW! Love this guys playing and he seems like he would be nice to just talk to. Wonderful playing!
I love drums, and love my engineering major. I know my opinion may be bias, but i think that the kind of scientific method--ish approach is the best way to progress if one's goal is to be able to play any kind of music. This guy has a profound philosophical knowledge of drumming. this video, one hour or so long, is more helpful than my last six months. i Think the world of drumming needs more guys with this approach. Thanks a lot drumeo. keep it up!
He doesn't play ONE ghost note that is written in the Lippincott groove at 40:00. I'm surprised no one has commented and been a keyboard warrior (It's the last invert before the 32nd notes). Matt Garstska is easily the most talented drummer of our generation. Can't wait to see what he has accomplished in 20 years!
I'm a little late in the game finding out about Matt. I knew he was something special after seeing about thirty seconds of him playing with animals as leaders. The more I see, the more impressed I am. Aside from all technical aspects of his playing, this guy has flow for days. Syncopated and smooth. He's one of my favorites already.
I was kinda upset when I heard that Navene is out of AAL and Matt is gonna fill his place. Saw him live and still was not sure if he was the right choice for this (despite guys like troy wright), but this video just blew every thoughts away. All hail Garstka, jesus christ. This guy is nuts! Gave me a complete new view on my drumming, practice and music understanding. Even I know you will/can't comment on my text, I wish you the very best mate. Keep it up Matt, you're the best. Makes me wanna go to Berklee really hard.
Jared i havent seen this video cause of some work but i know that this video is really going to be helpfull for playing drums as it is by matt . He is a beast behind drums And yes i know that after watching this video i will certainly practice for my ghost notes as noone plays beter ghost notes than matt does And one last thing this video is really gonna break records as it will surely gain million of vies THANKS
Incredible drummer both live and in studio. Had the pleasure of seeing him perform at Bonnaroo as well as the House of Blues in Cleveland with Animals as Leaders, absolutely killed it.
wow matt is great and seems like a cool dude he simplifies the complex and explains things in a round about way but so u can understand.....EXCELLENT DRUMMER!!!!

Matt is probably one of the most accurate drummers in terms of applying the stick to the head. Just look at his snare!!!
He was so skinny back then. He is just super jacked now. He is so disciplined in all things he does.
bro, that is far from skinny hahhah
He really wasn't. He's just jacked like a fucking strongman now.
@@LoadingSet7 yeah. he was skinny-er lol but now he's a tank
He went from not being in shape from a physique perspective, to curling 90 lb bells.
Surprisingly, he didn’t lose any speed.
Haven't you heard? Lars Urlich's "Advanced Jazz Techniques and Power Ballad Grooves" is out!!!
kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Lmao
*Lars Ulrich's advanced snare tune techniques* is now out too!

4 years ago and he still is just that fkn good

and mine is like 1 third of my entire head lmao
Oh...I just realized I'm extra terrible 🤣 he's such a musical drummer it's dope
Closer to a half dollar, but the point still stands

I know my opinion may be bias, but i think that the kind of scientific method--ish approach is the best way to progress if one's goal is to be able to play any kind of music. This guy has a profound philosophical knowledge of drumming. this video, one hour or so long, is more helpful than my last six months. i Think the world of drumming needs more guys with this approach. Thanks a lot drumeo. keep it up!
Invite Travis Orbin to do a lesson, please.
YES
good idea...
Agreed
Another great reason why Animals as Leaders is a major force in music. the musicianship is just off the charts.
Now we need one of these with Alex Rudinger
João Ferreira yes!!!!
Yup
Matt Garstka!!! Young Talent+his Great teacher in Berkley Sands so good.
That flying stick in the final song hit the crash on time lol.
Drumeo kicks major ass for getting all these great musicians words cannot express the gratitude I have
'i still gotta work on it' wtf he metric modulated the shit out of 7/4 at 220 bpm and he's still not satisfied 😂 fml
Matt is top notch. His velocity control is insane. A quality i think many over look.
not only is he phenomenal drummer, he makes the best drum faces :P
He doesn't play ONE ghost note that is written in the Lippincott groove at 40:00. I'm surprised no one has commented and been a keyboard warrior (It's the last invert before the 32nd notes). Matt Garstska is easily the most talented drummer of our generation. Can't wait to see what he has accomplished in 20 years!
You should play a drinking game: Everytime Matt says "you know", everyone has to drink lol :D
He is a great teacher because he talks systems and because he talks them from your level not his and that makes it relatable. Awesome character.

Thanks for the opportunity to win! Matt Gartska rules!!!!
Sonny Emory's lesson was one of the best.
Easy there, Kanye.
GermanSnipe14 ^^^ you win the internet...
I remember the first time I heard Matt's voice, I didn't expect that it be so high pitched
Gojira drumer!!! Pleeeeeeeeeees))) Thank for this monster too)
yeah Mario would be great :D
one of my favorite drummers :)
120% backed. But I bet drumeo won't because he's so underrated, not as flashy and he lives in France. Mario is one of my favorite drummers ever.
I love playing gojiras drums but it's hard to understand how he plays all that stuff so a lesson from him would be a lifesaver
@carana R I can teach you easily. Free. Email me btownshreds@gmail.com
Jared i havent seen this video cause of some work but i know that this video is really going to be helpfull for playing drums as it is by matt .
He is a beast behind drums
And yes i know that after watching this video i will certainly practice for my ghost notes as noone plays beter ghost notes than matt does
And one last thing this video is really gonna break records as it will surely gain million of vies
THANKS
Mike Johnston and JP Bouvet for Drumeo.
Incredible drummer both live and in studio. Had the pleasure of seeing him perform at Bonnaroo as well as the House of Blues in Cleveland with Animals as Leaders, absolutely killed it.
Matt seems like the kind of guy you'd want to get high then play drums with. Awesome as fuck
wow matt is great and seems like a cool dude he simplifies the complex and explains things in a round about way but so u can understand.....EXCELLENT DRUMMER!!!!
How many times did Matt say "You know?" Lol.
Superb lesson btw!
And cats too! Cats, cats, cats! Haha
So great. I love how much he loves to teach!
