spider7ven he’s not he’s using the click as a a first count and sub dividing it instead of actually treating it as quarters you could really treat it as a sixteenth note or
      (1) 2 3 4
      (2) 2 3 4
      (3)2 3 4
      (4) 2 3 4
Each parentheses is a part of the 35bpm

I can see it is to you too. You have to get to a level of playing to do what you do, or at least I did. Now I am an amputee diabetic...blah blah...I can't play. I’m calling it now, Matt garstka signature meinl hi hats coming soon. Seeing those r and d hats he’s been playing for a while now, same thing he did with his Fat stack and equilibrium China with the r and d stamp with slight different variations. It’s crazy that my favorite drummer also has helped make my two favorite cymbals ever which are the fat stack and equilibrium china and I’ve never truely found the perfect exact pair of sticks I’ve always been searching for till garstka came out with his Vic Firth signature sticks recently and they are also my favorite sticks hands down. So if he comes out with signature hats I’m definitly copping those too. These sound like Benny greb sand hats but more low end and bark and volume.

    • @drummusician
      @drummusician  6 лет назад +2

Although most of this(the quintuplets, septuplets, nontuplets, 5/4) could have been played to a 70 bpm click, I in fact played/recorded it to 35 BPM which is much more challenging. And when I go back & forth between 4/4 and 11 - that could not be played to a 70 bpm click and neither could the triplets in 7(21). The skill of playing to a metronome that only hits the one is only the start of it. The real challenge is to be able to seamlessly navigate back and forth between these and do so musically.

If my sight don't play tricks on me... For sure he uses EV RE27 mics for toms, Neumann KM184 for hi-hat and ride. I can see also some kind of U47 FET for bass drum (and second, unknown mic inside the kick) and Josephson E42 on top of snare. Overheads looks like Beyerdynamic M201 TG, which would be an interesting application for them, considering them being dynamic mics, but I am not sure. Certainly there are some room mics involved, but that's all I know.

IMO mics are definitely important, but I think the tuning, the room treatment, definitely the post production (which can get tricky sometimes having so many mics and dealing with bleed and other recording challenges) and most of all the player are things that make a drum kit sound great.

Really low tempos are so hard to play to. Would be great to hear Matt playing 8th notes, quarters, triplets, and really nailing slow patterns over the pulse. For me, the space between is what makes it sooooo hard!
    Amazing though. Goes without saying.

I couldn’t help but react out loud to this. I laughed all the way through. It’s just so amazing what someone can do after LITERAL YEARS spent doing the actions you’re seeing here. This is his life and it shows.
Thanks for the upload and SHIT FIRE AND SAVE MATCHES that obese snare.

Interesting idea to have the headphones turned around so you're monitoring as the audiences perspective. Wonder if intentional.

This is insane to think about because he can play what sounds like a 4/4 beat and then a 5/4 follow by two measures of 7/8 and it could all be wrapped up in a single measure of 3/4 at 35 bpm cause he has so much time between each beat.
