How's skekMal the Hunter got Rian?

- A quick answer to a common question from Netflix's Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Today we look at the ending of episode 5 "“The first thing I remember is fire” " from season one to see how skekMal the Hunter wound up with Rian, captured, hanging upside down at the beginning of episode five “She knows all the secrets”.

I was never confused as to how Rian was captured. I also at first felt like Ordon's sacrifice was for nothing. But after rewatching it, if it were not for Ordon, Rian would have been killed on the spot rather than be left alive for the encounter with SkekSil in Ep5.
You can pretty clearly see Skekmal snatching dragging Rian into the trees. I didn’t find the scene too confusing

It wasn't until I was editing the video that I even noticed that little flair from skekMal the Hunter... flinging Rian from his forearms to his back ones,... all while speeding away! 😲
I didn't notice that either! I knew that Rian had been captured, but I just thought that he tucked Rian under his arms. It really makes you realize just how strong skekMal is that he's able to restrain Rian with just his baby arms.
Wait if you were Rain and that got caught by the hunter and you were caught by the leg well that hurt???🤨

What actually baffled me in that scene is why the gobbles didn't eat the hunter.
He's probably too large, and hard to bite through with his armor. The gobbles could have eaten him, it just would've taken a lot longer for SkekMal to die than Rian's Father.

The Skeksis probably taste a lot worse than a Gelfling.
SkekMal was a bad hombre, no question. His physical stature and mobility was, apparently, maintained without the "benefit" of the crystal. I wonder if he was able to maintain himself because he was, maybe, eating Gelfling long before the others were syphoning off their essence. In a way he would have been getting the essence had he been eating them.
In the novels it talks about him snatching away Gelfling to get their essence for himself before they can make it to the Castle of the Cyrstal!

Other people have said that this is why he wears his trophies, to essentially get their essense. I didn't put much stock in it, but more and more, this makes sense. It explains exactly why he's in such good shape.
Sort of makes you realize that all that was holding the other Skeksis back from getting essense earlier was their "good" manners and relationship with the Gelfling.

There are problems with some of the action scenes, which don't work very well. The puppets have very limited body movements. And, since they're puppets, what can be framed in the cameras is limited.
I knew that he had captured him the first time I watched it, I thought that was pretty clear. However, I didn't really notice *exactly* how it happened until my second viewing. I watched on my phone instead as the resolution is better and tapped the 'reverse 10 seconds' button about 3 times. Being caught up in the action, I did not notice that he had tossed Rian from his primary to his secondary arms the first time I watched.
I honestly applaud anyone who caught that on their first viewing of it, without having to replay the scene a few times. But I did think it was pretty clear that SkekMal escaped and captured Rian at the very end of the episode.
All in all though, another great video, as expected. Even though I knew most of this, it's great that someone is making these explaining things to those that may not. I know I've learned quite a bit from your channel and Dreamfast With Me as well. You two are the best. Really awesome to see this movie I obsessed about as a kid finally get the attention it deserves, a new amazing series, and a fanbase that truly loves and appreciates it.

I never had this issue in particular I caught it the first time based on the loud panicking of all characters.

I think this is a good opportunity to delve deeper into this mysterious character, who rebelled against Skeksis tradition long before skekGra did. His insubordination was apparently still remembered in "Age of Resistance", as he wasn't even mentioned when the Skeksis were considering summoning their absent brethren back to the castle.

I want a dark crystal 2 movie
There was a second movie in the works that died time and time again in production hell, so they eventually released it (though tweaked) as a 12 part comic. It is called, Power of the Dark Crystal, and last year they came out with a sequel for that called "Beneath the Dark Crystal".
