For the first time ever, I understand wrist hinge, and I can get the club in the correct position without lifting my arms. Please can you explain the wrist hinge on the follow-through. Playing my best golf since watching your video. Thanks, Wes.
I have watched many videos trying to get my swing right and most fail to give the fine details that you provide and I had never heard anything about wrist set til your videos, and your step by step just my swing soo much better, thank you
Thank you! I've been struggling to get the right feel recently on my wrist flex. I've ended up with my left wrist cupping and that's causing big issues. Feeling the heel of my lead hand pushing the butt of the club down is helping me, after just one practice session, to get a more solid strike, minimise dispersion and restore those lost yards from my high right pop.
This just confirmed what I've been working on lately, especially the part about pushing down with the left pad and pulling up with the right index finger. I recently discovered I had been completely neglecting the lifting part with the right hand and not pushing down enough with the left. I created a drill for myself yesterday which helped a lot! This confirms what I realized, thank you!
Hi Chris, worked on your last three drills , complaint, I'm hitting the ball over the greens, seriously best strikes for many a year, reasonable distance back n my drives and easy and in control. Nearly 70 of the age and hitting 80, thanks Chris
@@ChrisRyanGolf SO I went out this arvo and tried it on the range. Just amazing stronger compression and sound not to mention less effort as well. Cant believe I have not tried this sooner!!! Thanks again Chris :)
Playing Trump Aberdeen this weekend and been grinding the practice out. Wrist set/Lead arm is a real struggle and your explanation and ease of understanding such complex drills is different class. This helped loads!
Chris, that bit at around 2:00 or so about the amateur takeaway is interesting. I know when I first started watching videos, I did the same thing, because I thought it felt like the “one piece takeaway” that all the videos recommended. Could be cool to see a video that explains the difference between what you were demonstrating, and an actual one piece takeaway. Love the content!
An excellent tip on wrist hinge Chris! I started incorporating this wrist hinge into my swing quite a number of months ago. It definitely has changed my shot making. I like the drill you suggested to guarantee you're on plane with the swing. Keep up the good work!
I think this was a very helpful video. Guess proof will be in the pudding, but feel I have a better understanding of how to achieve wrist set in my backswing.
Great drill for wrist hinge and keeping the left arm straight. I found the follow through extension part made a huge difference to my ball striking 💥 - Hit half swings the same distance as a full swing with a little draw, unbelievable 🤦🏼♂️ Now gotta figure out how to put it together for the course! Cheers Chris
Hello Chris,Great lesson on the back swing, but I lose my wrist hinge on the down swing.Starting the down swing with the lower body I can feel my right arm straightening around my hip area and the golf club scooping through impact. How can I stop this.Thank you.
Hello Chris - Christophe here... Great vid (as we come to expect from you ... 😆and you never let us down,) my problem concerns the "bit" that you didn't cover here, and that is what I need to know with regards to the "unhinge" on the down swing... Every time I try to focus on this I get completely out of shape - quick and my timing goes completely to pot... Can you do a follow up vid to cover this please.. It would be a great help...?
Big question (you touched on it lightly) is when to cock that wrist, early down or later on top. It seems the ideal for a tempo and a coil effect is to set it up later, I see pro's doing that when you watch in slow motion. However I wonder if an early setup is better for amateurs because it ensures that part is well done before you initiate the more complex shoulder rotation movement. Doing later for me seems to introduce a certain instability on the overall swing. Would you say it is better to insist on a later wrist setup even if that takes way longer to get good at?
Question; do you rotate the forearm or just turn the shoulders? I find if I hinge wrists, turn shoulders then no forearm rotation is needed to achieve the desired position...
Hey Richard, yes the firearms should rotate and I would almost guarantee that your do, in many Cases it can just be automatic though and won’t feel like you are, but without that move it would almost be impossible to hit the ball with any speed
@@ChrisRyanGolf so no shock but you are correct 😂, tried a subtle rotation of forearms away before setting club with wrist hinge and club fell nicely into a neutral position at the top which is what I’m after. 🤞hope it works again tomorrow 😂. Thanks 🙏
Yep! That worked perfectly. Thanks Chris! I have been working on keeping my lead arm straight, and I have never heard this before. Pushing the handle down definitely keeps the left arm straight.
Great video Chris, lots of video's concentrate on keeping the clubface aligned with the back and gloss over the wrist hinge. Never seen anybody mention the lead arm rotation which explains why I feel like I'm getting stuck in the backswing.
The wrist movement you refer to is called radial (up) and ulnar (down) deviation. It will occur automatically in a wide “one piece” takeaway if there is no muscular contraction (i.e. death grip) on the handle of the golf club during the swing. About a dozen years ago whilst re-tooling my golf swing using Hogan’s Five Lessons book I discovered how he created an “iron” arm triangle and grip via a sequence in which the club is held up in the air with bent elbows while placing the hands on the handle in a neutral or “weak” grip, like with hands together praying 🙏🏼 and then the club is lowered to the ground during which both arms straighten. At the arms straighten the ulnar and radius bones of both arms counter-rotate inward with the same action and feeling as if wringing a towel, which is exactly how it is illustrated in Hogan’s book. The counter-rotation of the forearms against each other STRETCH the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the arms resulting in a firming-up of the arm triangle and a reflexive gripping action on the handle of the club with the fingers which allows the golfer to hold it securely during the swing but also allow it wrists to freely “waggle” it up and down IN RESPONSE TO THE FORCE OF THE MASS SWINGING AT THE END OF THE CLUB. I illustrate the cause and effect here: ruclips.net/video/Ijii8tgIfOw/видео.html
Hi Chris excellent as usual, you have a lot of brilliant drills could you possibly make a video of what you think are the top 10 (just clips) it would be great to have them in one place for practice . Thanks Gerry Smyth
Hey Tobias, more just for this drill really and it helps keep some good with and control thr face. At full speed you would have less control over this but good to practice in this way
Ryan, to me technique is all relevant to success, ie Jim Furyk or Adam Scott, so which one has the better swing? No answer eh? Bubba Watson or Louis Ooterhuisen , well Bubba has won majors , lots of them, so whats right whats wrong, I am a retired Academy Tennis owner and Pro coach its the same in Tennis, there are basic rules at contact they all look pretty much the same , but preparation differs just as in Tennis , what Im trying to say is that there is no one way that works, its so personal and talent based eh? regards Fraser
Hey Beach, I’d agree with you to an extent and I do believe that there are many ways to get it done. In this video I did refer to this and said that we are looking for the wrists to work but this may happen earlier or later for some. 👍
Nice lesson, Chris. But I don’t think you should be encouraging people to practice golf in their offices. If they are at work they should be working. 😉
Many people in the industry would call what you're referring to as wrist hinge as wrist cock. Wrist hinge would be the wrist folding back and forth like a hinge on a door. The up and downward movement you talk about would be the up and down cocking motion used when hammering a nail. Regardless, thanks for the tip.
What Chris is showing is Anatomically called "Radial Deviation". The Movements you are referring to are "Extension of the Hand at the Wrist" of the TRAIL Hand AND "Flexion of the Hand at the Wrist" of the LEAD Hand.
I’d agree that there are other terms that could be used here, I actually tend to try and use the terms that ‘most golfers’ use and in my experience most call this wrist hinge, but agree that other terms may be a little more accurate
@@ChrisRyanGolf since you included a "visual" demonstration to Show the Movement, you're Good, Chris! When limited to Verbal, or Written usage, this is when the Correct Terminology becomes required to expess precisely. Much like in the RULES Of GOLF where there are specific terms, or phrases, used for specific actions or circumstances. 😉 (My first reply didn't tag the Original Commenter.)
It’s a really tough one to navigate Paul and I don’t really know what the correct answer is. The correct term is as you say Radial Deviation, although I’d hazard a guess that written down the majority of golfers couldn’t picture what that was….. wrist hinge may not be ‘accurate’ but I’d say there is a greater chance of more people visualising what that means. We as coaches ca.my have and know all of the correct terms but if the viewer doesn’t know them the communication breaks down, tough one
@@ChrisRyanGolf the thing is these days GOOGLE will define any "term" or "word" fairly quickly. 😉 You are doing "Show and Tell" in your Videos so you are providing ample clarity. 😊

Chris, are you missing the right wrist hinge component. Doesn't that backward hinge help set the club at the top?

The wrists only have so many possibilities within the structure we call a skeleton. So "to each their own" is not true.
@@jacobr4558 Are you telling me that Furyk and Scott have the same wrist angles?? LOL!!!
Yes! 100%
Radial/ulnar
Unless you have discovered some unknown angle that the wrists can move and generate clubhead speed? 😆
