It is a pleasure and a privilege to join Flabba, “me is a man who play bass “, here as he narrates the stories behind some of The Roots Radics biggest hits, runs you through his epic bass lines and explains how history was made.
Songs Mentioned in the Video
Freddie McGregor: ‘Big Ship’ Thompson Sound 7” Producer Linval Thompson 1982
This huge hit was not only followed by an LP of the same title on Greensleeves in the UK but would also provide Freddie McGregor with the name for his own label. However, Flabba describes here how it nearly didn’t happen as “everybody a pack up and we leave” before recording “one more song…” that would become for Freddie “him biggest tune I ever heard”.
Gregory Isaacs: ‘Front Door’ African Museum 7” & 12” Producer Gregory Isaacs 1980
Michael Prophet: ‘Gun Man’ Volcano 7” Producer Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes 1981
John Holt: ‘Police In Helicopter’ Volcano 7” Producer Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes 1983
Sugar Minott: ‘No Vacancy’ Hit Bound 7” Producer: Winston ‘Niney The Observer’ Holness (for the Hoo Kim brothers @ Channel One) 1983
Barrington Levy: ‘Prison Oval Rock’ Arrival 7” Producer Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes 1983
“It’s a hit tune this! Making ‘Prison Oval Rock is another movie… this is a history. Listen and learn” while Flabba takes you through the recording session at Channel One where Junjo, as always “carried a whole bag of young youth with him to his sessions” and his delight in recalling how “a me discover (Wycliffe) ‘Steely’ Johnson!”

Many folks believe that reggae is built around that scratchy staccato guitar, but it's that DEEP bouncy bass that really lays the foundation for which the music is built upon. Thanks for the subtitles 'cause his patois is thicker than molasses!
Extremely thick
😂
Thicker than his tone
Those people have never been in a dance hall setting. If they have, they'd know the music is SUPER bass heavy.
When in the dance hall you'll understand that 'drum and bass make you whine up you waist'
Watch all old time roots dances all have super big bass bins.
Yes. Bass is the foundation of the music
To your point, I think of big fat 15-18" woofers when I think of reggae bass
Agreed! Flabba inspired me to play Bass & my brother was already a rock drummer. I teach him the kick drum & importance of hi-hat. Now all we do is play reggae 😊
Man, what a quiet humble legend. A true giant in reggae literally and musically.... Give dis man him flowers while him alive.🌻🌻🌻🌻🌷🌷🌷.
Reality medz 👊🏿
Yes ur right Erroll 'Flabba' Holt is one of the the best Bass players in the world l, roots radics then Dub Syndicate wich both roots radics came first and then years later Changed the name to Dub Syndicate he always was and is so good nobody plays like he can! ❤️ And ur spot on we should appreciate his work on Bass while he is still on this 🌏
@@BluesHiroshima I mean he does not crow about his accomplishments
@@BluesHiroshima yes we did watch the same video as each other that's pretty funny lol 😂, but great video Flabba Holt is a legendary bass player I tho it was a great video what do you think of it!,
That's a beutifull comment and I couldn't agree more 👑
"Like a lizard in a leaf swaying in the breeze.".
The most beautiful music metafor I've ever heard. This is wisdom
5:09
actually its lizard pon a limb
@@sny1120 true. but still beautiful. The question is: could a lizard get a grip on a leave? More like a caterpillar 😀
That's exactly how the dance hall patrons look when the music hits them at night! Just like the lizard hanging on to the branch in the wind!
`80`s reggae was da best! I still listen and record it
4:57 !!! Charming, funny, confident - most importantly skilled. Number #1!
Finally someone made a record of this great bass player, Flabba is a true legend, many people only think of funk, rock, jazz bassists, when much of the best if not the best bass lines are in reggae music. Make no mistake, it's not easy to be simple and brilliant.
That guy make it easy.
Respect!
Up💯 fi real 🔥🔥🔥
Damn straight, brother!
This is one of the greatest uploads in the history of RUclips.
Salute to the legend FLABBA HOLT … his works shaped so many lives.
Big up I NEVER KNEW crew
I can’t get tired of watching Flabba Holt being interviewed.
Anyone who watches this whole video now knows the Roots Radics backed nearly every great reggae artist in the 1st half of the 80's. Thanks Flabba for the golden years of Rub a Dub!
You can tell his genuine love for the music, how excited he gets before playing and speaking about those moments. What is missing from a lot of today's musicians and their works!
They really had to love it because the money wasn’t really there yet.

My heritage is so rich!! These great musicians never got Their due! JAH know!

The driving bass for the legendary Roots Radics. The amount of riddims this man was behind is unreal. Major dancehall anthems. When he played the *"Gunman"* bassline @ 8:14 bwooy, that's my youth right there!! I was still in school when dem tune hit. We're talking 1980-81. This man here created nuff classics. Nuff respect, Flabba Holt. Thank you, thank you, thank you.👏👏
This brother is definitely one of the cornerstone of the Music without doubt or any apologies.Such a joy to see recording of History.Maximum respect.Your contributions are beyond any amount of pecuniary value.Thank you
Absolutely! Very well said my brother
Flabba's basslines have help me captive for so many years, especially those heavy dub lines - what a wonderful human being

GOAT reggae bassist, big up Flabba.... greetings from Kenya! Your bass lines are legendary and Will forever remain so! Bless you and long live!
Humble Icon !! Blessed love
The Jamaica Federation of Musician should honor you while you’re alive !!🔥🔥🔥💥💥💥
Flabba jolt mi call him....when dem line hit you is like it shock you!! 🎸🎸
👊🏿
Does this guy ever play any bad notes? I don’t think so. Wow! It’s amazing to realize Flabba Holt plays so perfectly and gets all of those tones out of just his thumb! His playing may look simple but it isn’t. Everything about how he plays is rock solid. The sound is super focused and his sense of timing is at a superhuman level. Amazing!
It's so brilliant. That Police in Helicopter bassline in particular is mad..
My all time favorite tunes. The Roots Radics were unstoppable at the time. What I've just listened as discussed by Flabba is a drop in an ocean. There are tracks like Jacqueline by Hugh Mundell, lce cream Love by Johnny Osbourne, Badman Posse by Junior Murvin, to name the few and the list goes on.
Bless 👊🏿
sesethu Onika - I blast the tunes you quoted on full volume and many others from that time (1980 - 1982) when I drive up and down around Atlanta in America. Basically Roots Radics @ Channel 1, any singer, mixed at King Tubby by the scientist. That Big ship album is definitely in my personal top 10 reggae list of all time
Much respect Flabba Holt I salute you to the full max you're a living legend 💯% 👏🏾 I love this interview ❤️ thanks for sharing 👍🏾
This is certainly a great piece of reggae history. To know how many of these songs came about, how the bass for each song came to be, Steelie on the piano on Prison Oval Rock...
Thank you Mr. Holt for your contribution to these heavy bass lines in the early 80s. As I tell people all the time, these tunes and instruments played were what made real sound systems and made reggae music reach many parts of the world as no one played bass like how it is played in reggae music and in the late 70s, early 80s the bass was very heavy.
Thanks for all involved in this video, definitely learned and confirmed certain things in reggae.
This man is a musical Genius........
this upload a 💎... Nuff top bassies came out of JA.. but you see Flabba and also Robbie dem man deh run di main with bassline galore🏆nuff raspect Flabba!!

Thank you for showcasing this incredible Jamaican! Legendary Flabba Holt! This man and the Roost Radics band are responsible for so many classic songs so many people aren't even aware that he created them. Blessings for bringing Flabba out of the shadows so a new generation can know the people who created so many classic reggae songs. Long live Flabba, long live REAL reggae music. I'm so fascinated by the stories behind these songs. Maybe you can do a series on the
the other members from Roots Radics who are no longer with us, Styles Scott, Bingy Bunny and more..
Old school Reggae, as it should be. Flabba Holt is a legend, feeling some Lover's Rock tunes... relaxing with a rum and big Cuban.
the great flabba
Love love this. That bass omg. When he does the Spanish Town riddim he is so deep in the zone…what a beautiful human
Great interview. Very revealing as to how these great tunes came together. SO glad it had subtitles!
Yeah man me too: the wildest and most incomprehensible Patwah I've ever heard! I only can get "man!" at the end of sentences 😂
Mr. Sibbles taught me this riddim, my first, when I was 16 in his Toronto studio on Eglington Ave ( Reggae Lane ) I’m almost 50 now still love to play it…Mr. Holt epitomizes everything great about about bass, time, touch , feel, love love love he plays the same bass guitar his whole career. He has a chunk of inlay missing first fret and the Man na care. Humble and absolutely no artifice…I bow down now and listen Sir. Appreciate you. This must be 20th time I watch this it never ceases to inspire on every level
This man should get national awards for his contributions to reggae music miss Grange should make sure these people are recognized in our history

So inspirational to hear that Flabba is the type of bandleader to let the youth play their one song when time allowed . The end of this interview resonates with me on a profound level. Give the under dog a chance . Roots Radics Bassie Thank you for sharing this history.
Yes King! Yu Bless every time. JAH Guide and Protect Yu.
I've been loving his groove since the early 80's
Thank you so much for this.
Like a lizard on a leaf
Just chillin
While the breeze blows by
Just going with the flow
That a rad analogy
Total legend this guy. Remember the whole of modern dance music culture, Techno, House, hip hop, all of it, came from the reggae sound systems in the same way rock 'n roll came from delta blues. And the reggae sound systems where built on drum and bass, particularly bass. So in so many ways Mr. Holt here, along with Mr Shakespeare of course, laid the foundation for the revolution in electronic music in the 80's that is still going strong today. The very same bass principles he's talking about here are all over House and Techno, 808's in hip hop etc, that's how important Flabba Holt is to the history of music. Gotta to say though Flabba's accent is a peach, I can usually understand about 80-90% of Jamaican patois. Flabba's not so much, sub titles deeply appreciated.
Much appreciated to hear and see one of the magic men showing us his magic ja bless
These great men make me proud to be a born Jamaican, it’s unbelievable how talented Jamaicans are!! Like I said before we need a REGGAE DANCEHALL hall of fame ASAP!!
