Dr. Cliff, I live in North Carolina so I am a bit too far from you for a personal visit. However, your videos taught me what to look for in a local office. My AuD followed all the practices that you recommend and produced a perfect solution on the first try. You may never hear from many of the people that you have helped, but we are out here. And we thank you!
Dr Cliff , You are the best! Thank you so much for all this important information. Until your videos there was no other option for real information that was not just marketing. I never could believe anything I read online, you have exploded the internet with the truth about hearing aids. Thank you!
I had to call Dr. Cliff to thank him personally for how much knowledge he has provided me in advance of my hearing exam tomorrow. And, my friends, HE ACTUALLY ANSWERS HIS CALLS!! If Southwest flew to Anthem (at discount prices, of course)....I'd be on a flight to be examined and fitted by Dr. Cliff. I'm "armed and dangerous" for tomorrow's exam.....but happy as can be. Thanks again, Dr. Cliff.
Hi Larry. Nice speaking to you. Thank you for the compliment. I'm very happy to provide information on hearing loss and treatment so you can demand high quality care from wherever you decide to receive treatment. Best of Luck!
Dr Cliff, What is the difference between the various remote microphones accessories made for Resound hearing aids, for example the "Multi" mic vs. "Micro" mic Vs, "Unite Mini" Microphone? Thank you.
BiCROS is amazing if programmed correctly. I've been a fan of Phonak for a while. I continually try other brands, but keep coming back to Phonak. Battery life depends on the device. You should be able to find rechargeable that last you all day, or size 312 batteries that last 3-4+ days.
What is your opinion of the Lyric hearing aid? Are there other hearing aids that can be worn 24/7 and do you carry them? What are the pros and cons for the Lyric hearing aid? Thanks.
Hi Dave. The Lyric is a good hearing aid if you want a solution to help you hear while you are sleeping, or don't want to fiddle with a daily wear device. Verifying the prescription can be difficult with a Lyric but not impossible. Candidacy requires a large enough ear canal, no ear related medical conditions, minimal wax production, and thresholds inside the fitting range. Pros are you don't need to fuss with it because it stays inserted into your ear canal for 2-3 months. Cons are cost and durability.
Thanks for your info. I'm having my testing done in a couple of months and need to get educated. I'm totally against blue tooth and anything that can possibly cause cancer. Now I know not to get that type and to ask questions.
Great video but in your opinion what do you think of the Signia nx 312 vs the Oticon Opn.i have trouble hearing in noise which one would you recommend? .Thanks
Both are good hearing aids. Your performance in noise depends on the level of technology, your Speech in Noise score, and if they have been fit using Real Ear Measurement. Otherwise, there are likely only slight differences between the two.
Just started looking at hearing aids and wondered why Miracle Ear is never listed as one of the 6 best...I need direction so I obtain the best pair. I just also came down with tinnitus several months prior!
Wish you were in LA. Two questions. Just saw your review of Phonak Audeo Marvel and it looks great. Will you be able to use these with iPhone live feature which uses iPhone as a receiver in restaurants and places like that? You talked about a new feature coming out next year. Could you explain please?Hate to spend $5k-6k and then want to upgrade in 6 months.
Great Video. I've had a hearing problem resulting from swimming underwater in an upstate New York lake where the dirty wash water from residents washing machines ( live enzyme were in detergents at the time) drained into the lake. My ears would painfully close off and retain fluid for months at a time before reclogging. Went to dozens of ear specialists in NYC. They were clueless. I had tubes put in, the whole 9 yards. One doctor suggested an operation for a deviated septum (only because he said, my insurance would pay for it). I then found a Dr. in a posh neighborhood on Manhattan's 5th Avenue. He looked like Lurch from the Adam's family and spoke just as much. Back then .. 70s-80s, he had a cone shaped device (like The Coneheads wore on their heads on Saturday Night Live) that came down from the ceiling and peered into my ear drums. His only words to me was, "I can fix that." During the operation, he took a piece of skin off my outer ear and rebuilt my ear drums. This alleviated the pain for a while. But when I went searching for him a year later, he disappeared off the planet and since there was no internet back then, no way after dozens of calls, to track him down. I went to many doctors over the years as my ears would get clogged. The New York Eye and Ear, shoved a hose in my ear which had me reeling on the floor of the hospital in excrusiating pain (supposedly the operation left me with no esctasion tube pressure). I've driven my family and everyone crazy over the years saying, "WHAT?" The many ear doctors who examined me said things from, it wasn't possible to rebuild my eardrums (the operation that I had) to, there's too much scar tissue. I wanted to get a hearing aid but was told that because my hearing was due to scar tissue and other factors, the increased volume from a hearing aid would only make me lose more of my hearing. I was told not to undergo any further operation at this time in my life by one doctor as it could leave me deaf. I'm in my early 60s now ... Hearing problems since my teens. I've learned over the year HOW CLUELESS many ear doctors are. Any suggestions as I'm at the end of the road.
One thing I have learned in my time is that there is ALWAYS a treatment option for hearing loss. Will it restore perfection, not likely, but it can improve your hearing. As for the other stuff. That is a crazy story and I feel for you brother.
Doctor Cliff, AuD Doctor could you please tell me is it possible to restore one ear hearing loss which happened due to kidney problem around 20 years ago?
Great video. Very informative. I have had SSD all my life. 34 years old now. I guess I don't know what I am missing out on but recently evaluating my life now I realise I avoid group interactions. Very concious on where I sit.. always placing my partner on my bad ear so i can hear friends/strangers(and they dont think I'm ignoring them) I love my partner so to miss out on her talking during social dinners, events etc is a pain. But new friends have told me they thought I was really stuck up on first meeting me(as I only answered them half the time at best). My right ear has almost total hearing loss(no day to day sounds heard) Left hearing is normal(no loss) Are there any invisible hearings aids for SSD? Or what would you recommend for me to explore? Keep up they great work!
Hi Kevin. Glad you like the videos. There are a number of options for SSD. If you are looking for the most invisible option, the Signia Silk Nx CROS is the smallest currently available. Both Signia and Phonak are my preferred manufacturers for CROS and BiCROS.
Hey doctor cliff have you had a chance to review the new miracle ear genius 3.0 line yet? And if so what do you think of them? And do you know who makes them?
MiracleEar Hearing Aids are just rebranded Signia hearing aids that are locked. There is only 1 thing I hate more than locked hearing aids and it is hearing aids that haven't been programmed using Real Ear Measurement.
My Bernafon aids are annoying when I’m outside in the wind. Are there other brands that handle this problem better? Other than muting them are there other ways to combat this problem?
Hi Steve. Since this is a mechanical issue of wind hitting the microphones, the only ways to solve this are to cover the aids (Ear Gear), use In-The-Canal aids, or use a devices that mutes the side the wind is on and use the input from the other side. Otherwise, hearing aids that go behind the ear are highly susceptible to wind.
Hi Jeffery. Pretty much any brand that isn't locked. Both Beltone and Miracle Ear lock their hearing aids. There are a number of factors that go into determining the best technology for you. Unfortunately, that requires an in-depth evaluation and assessment of your needs which requires time. If you would like to discuss this further, please email me at Cliff@appliedhearingaz.com
If properly programmed hearing aids don't help to reduce the tinnitus, you have the option to activate tinnitus maskers. Many of the manufacturers have tinnitus masking options in their devices.
Thank you for this excellent video! I would like to know if all audiologists would be familiar with the terminology you use. I have had Siemens hearing aids for about 4 years and I have never been satisfied with them. I paid $6,000.00 in cash for these damn things and they have been adjusted dozens of times but they never get it right. They hang a device around my neck and make adjustments with their computer and say "I bet that's a lot better right"? It never is. On my last adjustment 3 days ago they informed me (after 4 years) that the right hearing aid appears to be defective and that is no doubt the reason it only works 2 or 3 days a week. They also told me and I quote: "We hate to tell you this but your hearing aids are obsolete and you should consider having us provide you with new ones" (at a cost of course). None of the tests you mentioned were performed and I received no educational instruction at all. Finally, my hearing aids have what I consider a design flaw. The tiny hole in the little rubber cup that goes into your ear canal fills with wax at lease once a day and more during hot weather. The part that goes behind your ear is very suseptible to damage from sweating and I get a dead battery signal and one or both stop working. I have my ears checked for wax build up 3 or 4 times a year and if necessary it is removed. Unfortunately only a medical Dr. can probe inside your ears (or so I have been told). If you have a recommendation on another brand of hearing aid I should consider I would appreciate your advice.
Hi Cplrey. Thanks for the comment. I'm sorry for your experience with the place you've been going for your hearing aids. It sounds like a hearing aid sales outfit rather than a hearing treatment clinic. A 4-year-old set of hearing aids are not obsolete by any means. Have you been using a Dry & Store kit to remove moisture from the devices every evening? New hearing aids rated IP68 for moisture would likely help the moisture issue, but you still need to be using a Dry & Store kit. You are correct with the Siemens design flaw of their click domes. Unfortunately, this is only fixed by switching hearing aid manufacturers. Audiologists are licensed to perform otoscopy and ear wax removal just like Medical Doctors. It is very difficult to recommend a hearing aid without a proper evaluation. However, based on most of the comments you have made, you would likely do better with literally any other hearing aid, as long as it was fit and programmed properly using Real Ear Measures.
Hello again. Are there any hearing aids in the market now, or forthcoming, that are fully compatible with Samsung S9+. Those little clip-on devices are a pain. Thank!!
Hi Dr. Cliff, Thanks for wonderful and informative videos on your channel. I am considering buying a hearing aid and was recommended to buy Signia Pure NX7. What do you think of this brand? Also, the price difference between what an audiologist quoted me and what is available from hearing.com is almost $2500 for the pair. Do you think it is worth paying $2500 more for the service that the audiologist will provide? as hearing.com also said that with the teleport (or teleconnect?) feature on the device, they will be able to program it over the phone etc. Also, what is your opinion on battery devices versus re-chargable devices? Thanks.
Hi Prashant. I am not familiar with hearing.com. It does not seem to be an actual website. My answer is clearly biased because I am a provider who charges for services, but you usually get what you pay for. There is a reason that I see dozens of patients with online hearing aids each month. Majority of the time they are not programmed correctly. Oftentimes, there are massive errors in the programming. Other times, they are clearly not in the right devices for their loss or listening needs. So in my opinion, if you want to hear better than you currently do, online is good. If you wan to hear your best, you should probably find a clinic that follows Best Practices and go to them.
