The famous WW2 song that sounds a lot like a peace song to me.
Although "Lili Marleen" does not seem to fit a lot into my repertoire, it is a wonderful song for me. Up until now, I have not recorded anything in my mother language. Furthermore, I am intrigued by songs that have made history. And "Lili Marleen", which was listened to by scores of soldiers on all sides of this horrible conflict, is definitely one of them. Written as a poem by Hans Leip during the first world war, it became an international hit during the second.
It is a song full of love, sadness and yearning to come home. It's also a little cheesy, but hauntingly beautiful. I hope you enjoy.

Your performance of this famous song is the BEST example of how this beautiful song should be sung! Your youthful voice and the feeling and expression with which you sing, best evokes the true feeling of "The girl under the lantern". Your choice to hum the third stanza of this poetic five stanza song is brilliant, thereby respecting it's origin as a soldier's song, while at the same time suppressing the song's overly militaristic theme, so that this famous song can better be the more universal love song it is meant to be.

Song like this really humanizes everyone caught up in that dreadful conflict. To think that young men on all sides just wanted to go home and be with their loved ones. Great song and great rendition!

It is interesting that you refer to Lili Marlene as a "peace song" since it was adopted by soldiers on all sides in WWII. I guess that the song delivered a universal message of something very human that applied to every soldier regardless of politics.

But yes, exactly. I wrote that, for ME, it's a peace song, for the reason you named. And because it's not a song that glorifies war or promotes nationalism, but one that simply speaks of love, yearning and homesickness.

It's the same force that makes parents take care of their children when life is hard. When someone must fight for the life in disease for the loved people. Really beautifull song.
