- Here I test out 7 different cans of spray chrome. I had no idea what to expect but I was shocked how awful this stuff is. See for yourself.

Well, you may have wasted a bunch of money, but you saved me from wasting a bunch of money. So thank you for that :-)
That's the idea behind the channel. I'm curious about paints and colors myself so I figured let's all of us see them together 👍thanks for watching
The best effect with the metal/chrome spray cans, I spray them into a baby food jar and then spray them through an airbrush. You have much more control over the amount of paint and the pressure you spray it at. Light thin coats and a decent compatible clear and it does look like a mirror.
A very popular rattle can for chrome is Rustoleum. I'm surprised you didn't try that.
Holding a can out too far causes the paint to dry on the way to the object and causing it to leave a rough surface. I noticed that you complained about being to heavy and impossible to be light. Just stop painting once you get that first initial coat. Sand it lightly if needed and put another coat lightly. Quick strokes, not slow. Another trick is with a new can, make a practice shot on a waste object or sheet or that cardboard box, and then shoot on the spoons. That way you can get rid of any clogged pieces that might shoot out on your spoon as that one did. Also any thin material that may be in the line will shoot out on your practice piece and not mess up your spoon before the good stuff comes out. In other words, clear out the line before painting.
Both of my local stores don't have it and cause it's a spray can it has to be shipped by ground which is now expensive. But I do plan on getting some. Did you see my review of Krylon Foil paint? That came out very nice
...And too close doesn't give the solvents enough time to evap away, leaving the paint thin, muddled and running. So it's a bit of a crap-shoot as to what's the sweetheart distance. Frustratingly, not just between brands, but with Rustoleum (Tremclad in Can.), can to can. They messed with their rattle can formula's years ago, and it's never been the same and WAY worse ever since.
What's more infuriating is they refused to even acknowledge the change. I couldn't speak with anyone other than low to mid level drones.
Actual reason to watch the video starts at 4:34. Nice selection of paints and set up!!
Preciate it
Love how you organize your place plus those wallpapers makes it look like an awesome place to relax while sipping a cup of coffee
I call it my Fortress Of Solitude
Scotch
Wow look at those paint bottles !!! Amazing man ! Im jealous
Can you believe there's that many paint brands out there?? Too bad I'm addicted to paint
Spaztix, better than any of the ones shown
Can’t wait to see the MRP review. I’m anxious to see the metals, and the luminous paints. Some of my race cars need them.👍👍keep up the great reviews.
MRP reviews coming soon, plus I'm planing on a fluorescent paint shoot out vid too 👍
MRP is coming very soon, hopefully this week
@@barbatosrex9473 Nice. I had to pick me up a can of the 1290 chrome. I haven’t decanted any yet, but I figure I would try. Also looking forward to the MRP review. I can’t seem to get enough metalizers paints. Still love my Alclad and Splash. When you get a chance I’d like to see a review/lesson on the mr. hobby washes. I picked up a few, but I’m thinking about picking them all up. Always different color shading on cars. Thanks.
@@bigchef2112 let me know how the decanting goes. Splash test video is posting tonight
Thx for taking the time doing these tests. Saves us some trial and error and of course some money. Now I still have to check a whole bunch of videos but just by watching these few so far I have decided to get some Rustoleum. It's for the kids(9&10) first car models and they DIY so far. Any clearcoat tests done yet?
Thx again and I enjoy your content.
I'm planing a big clear Gloss and Matt test. Still gathering what I need. Going to do airbrush and spray cans. Also coming up is a test of Krylon's new metal colors spray paint.
Great information! Honest reviews. Keep up the good work.
Thank you my friend, many more to come
this guy is awesome, it's like if I've known him for over 10 years the way he speaks to us. keep it up man
Hey buddy, thanks for that awesome feedback. The way you guys reply to me I feel like we've all been friends for years too. Thank you so much for watching, I have tons more content to go.. 😉
Thank you for testing these!
my experience in working at a paint store is that krylon cans tend to spray the best. colors are sort of hit or miss but the application goes on nice and easy.
Great info! I did have a question, what was the temperature in the room? Also it seemed as if after the 2-3 spray on most it looked like chrome, but after heavy spray it would dull out, it would make sense to maybe do 2-3 coats max? Wait waiting a few min in between coats? Also what about the surface? Those plastic spoons aren’t as porous as other surfaces that have been sanded?
Love this channel and all the videos. They’re super helpful and oddly peaceful.
Thanks friend, I'm trying my best. Just posted another and more coming this week
Great tests thanks, the problem is without a good thick clear the chrome sprays mar to grey easy. Trying on a gas tank anyways this week.
Excellent test ! well done mate
Thanks for that. Appreciate all the effort. Helps me
best videos, keep em coming!
Thanks! Will do!
you have a lot more experience painting, but have you tried clear coating these paints, IOR (index of refraction)(shiny-ness/glossy-ness) usually comes from the clears not the basecoats, I know from working an automotive paint line(for center caps on wheels) powder coat(a kind of clear coat) can make a world of difference on dull silver aluminum, I'm just wondering if you put 2-3 coats of clear on if they would be more chrome in appearance.
Woozie Woozer!! What a collection cool !!
AWESOME.! THANKS! GREAT VIDEO
Your set up is INSANE I just bought some panel liner and acrylic x20 🤣 just starting I’m going tomorrow to pick up the enamel x20, but I’m thinking of buying some cheap kits and getting into this
Great hobby, I wish you luck and have fun with it.
The testors extreme lacquer is amazing for shelf models it's shiny like glass with no orange peel and no clear needed I use them on my show builds and don't even need to wet sand it comes out perfect every time no orange peel and like glass then I hit it with clear like 2k and it's amazing airbrush top quality paint jobs
good informative video and you seem like a solid dude
Very helpful video many thanks!
You're welcome and thanks for watching
I gotta get some of those clear shelves!! Those are perfect!
Thanks for a great video!
Check my video on organizing my paints
hi, apart from the quality of the shine, is there any chrome acrylic that won't come off when you rub the paint with your finger? I've heard about the "wait 1 month for best drying", but I'm not convinced. I'd like a paint that sticks without the need of varnish or lacquer. Thanks.
Excellent review! Love your work area. Do you ever get a chance to build models?😀 if you ever get a chance, can you review true colors?
Tru-Color review is coming
You should have an extra paint giveaway ! Bonus score for me suggesting ! Really enjoying ylu videos, I've learned a lot thank you
I will soon for sure. I tried selling a bunch of paint after I tested it on ebay but when I went to ship it, I had to ship ground and it was like $40. No one want to pay $40 for shipping. Now I have a garage full of spray paint. 😕
@@barbatosrex9473 😮
Each modeler can pour paint from a spray into a convenient container and from it pour paint into an airbrush !!! And then apply a layer of paint of the desired thickness!
You put it on lightly by applying multiple light coats as opposed to one thick coat. What are you painting exactly? Is there any reason you can't just wet sand with a 3000-5000 grit after the color coat dries, in order to eliminate texture before application of clear?
Nice review, looking into allclad to redo chrome parts on my car
Ok now we all know to decant the cans. My 2nd attempt to decant was a complete success . I sprayed using your cover up with rag and I am using smaller mason jars and waiting for gas to disperse I’ll screw on lid leave it lose for 8 hours then tighten for later use.
Excellent, I love it when a plan comes together
@@barbatosrex9473 Yes the plan is working I saw an older video that your paint racks fell down. Sorry about that but it sure looks cool,I think of all the dust I am going to get here in Southern California , I am thinking of draws with 45 degree angle trim like another video. However with lumber going crazy a little harbor freight general roll way will work. They come in white or black I have a couple in garage black
I'd see if thinning them heavily and using an airbrush would help, at least for the ones that give a decent sheen and coverage from the can. While you are wasting propellant emptying it into an airbrush canister, you at least won't be wasting the paint if it works out decently.
Thanks for the content
Good comparisons.
In other words you had two winners...one acrylic..one enamel..great review..from what i can gather AK Interacive are coming out with spray of their great metallic paints..the Humbrol Metal Cote sprays should be of a different formula to the regular mettalic spray
The Humbrol test video will be up tonight, in an hour or so 👌
i assume youve improved by now, but still . . . its possible to get all of these paints to mirror finish out of the can, but each behaves differently. always prep your surface first ofc, then for chromed paints you want to high gloss or ultra high gloss black base coat. once youve got a nice super gloss surface dust coat the first coat or two and then let it flash(around 10min) then lay a decent coat down but not too thick. let it flash between coats(not dry, or you will layer the paint and it wont give you the finish you want) until you come back and see the finish that you want. be careful not to lay it on too thick, stick to thinnish coats or it will orange peel on you. source - have practiced and experimented so long i can reproduce shop quality candy auto finish with spraycans
You should upload a video of you getting a mirror finish from any of these spray can chrome paints because I don't believe you.
good efforts and nice video
Awesome vid Rex! Glad to see your collection is expanding! I’m sorry that this guy said that to you, hateful people just say stuff like that sometimes. Nonetheless, great vid!!
I’m so excited to see all those paints tested!
what was that amazing looking chrome at 22:05 you mentioned? I want to get some of that for a project im currently doing
May I suggest trying these paints on different materials. Paints can have a variable look depending on the surface. Metal and plastic can sometimes have different affects based on material. 🤔 just a thought/suggestion. Was never explained if those where made for plastics and/or metals
Paul from NB Canada Glad to see I am not Tue only one fighting the encroaching wall of tools on the desk...
Hey I was wondering if you knew of any clear coat sealers or varnishes that didn't interfere with the brightness of the chrome. I want to paint a knife that has a very high shiny mirrored chrome color to it but whenever I add that protective layer is dulls the color out.
keep going with your test's,like it, keep up the good work!
Thanks, Many more to come, another just went up
I'm over here with about 80 different jars of paint colors and that's all I use to build the last 20 models and this guy has hundreds of diffrttypes of paints and clears and metalizers I'm so jealous lol
Most of these paints are meant to have a gloss clear coat over them. They are all old school attempts at chrome paint. Only one I've found is this new one.

Whats the paint name you used on the spoon that you keep bringing in? The one spoon on your lower left side.
I want to paint my cutty plastic grill chrome.
Check out my latest video
you are finaly getting it right, light coat's, way to go grasshopper!!!
Thank you Sensei
Krylon chrome will be marked original Chrome, works great, very shiny
So what paint exactly did you use and combine to get that mirror look?
I’m confused
Thanks you .👋🏼
Great video! If you don't mind me asking, have you tried AK's 3rd generation acrylic primer? If you have, could you link me to the video please? If you haven't made a video on it but have tried it, would you recommend it? I'm looking for odorless paints and live in a country where hobby stores predominantly carry only tamiya or mr color. Thanks in advance!
Sorry for the late reply. I will be doing a video on all the primers but I would highly recommend Stynylrez primers. So far they are the best acrylic primers I have ever used and they come in a ton of colors. You will love them for sure
Have you tried Molotow Liquid Chrome markers and refill. Its literally a mirror effect so nice.
Yes, I tested Molotow here. I emptied a Molotow Chrome marker in my airbrush and painted it. Came out great. Check out the video on my channel. I'm trying to test out every chrome out there.
Look for some motostorm chrome. You can only order it from them directly
Question, any advice for me I’m painting a couple of metal belt buckles and the paint doesn’t seem to stick your pills rather quickly after three codes for codes and I’ve even done a couple coats on top of that clearcoat and it’s still not working any help would be great thanks!
Which brand are you using?
Thank you for helping to save me money!
Have you tried a surface that is not plastic? the solvents might be eating the plastic, causing the rough surface. Other plastics might not react, depending on the solvent
I think you need something that can hold the spoon other than your hand. That way, you can stand further back with the thicker paints.
Not sure if I missed it but at the end the spoons that are by them selfs that are super chrome what paint is that?
That's Alclad. Did you see my test videos of Alclad Chrome?
Gotta give Testors prop's for at least not being outright deceptive with their lids! LOL!
You mentioned a chrome paint that you spray on with an airbrush. It sounded like AlGlass or something like that. Can you please provide me with those names and can you tell me if it will work on a cleaned up metal. I have some old trunk parts I need to paint because I cannot find new ones. Thank you.
I've tested over a dozen airbrush chrome paints, it's one of my mainstays. Alclad is what I said here but also check out Duralumen Tuff, Born Paint Chrome and Green Stuff World among many others I have tested
The Krylon "FOIL" paints give a real chrome and gold. Like a Molotow finish. BUT! I cannot find ANYTHING to clearcoat it. Everything seems to kill the shine. Tried your E7. Will try more...?
could you tell me what your sample spoons where coated with the two spoons with high gloss finish
Alclad Gloss Black Base
your two references spoons with black chrome and ordinary chrome what color were they painted with?
Alclad Chrome and Alclad Black Chrome
If you never found a can of Rust Oleum, I picked up a can a couple months ago of the metallic "Brite coat" chrome and it comes out pretty smooth. I didn't do anything else with it other than just see how it sprayed, because I honestly didn't even need it. Don't ask me why I bought it...
Did it look like chrome or aluminium
@@MarstaJNZ Shit, I don't remember lol. I do know that it wasn't as chrome as we'd all like it to be, but it was acceptable though. I also didn't try any polishing methods, maybe that would help.
Starts video saying his work area is a mess... if that is a mess, I can find no words to describe the surroundings of my work area 😒. Anyways nice vid of some interesting tests.
Have you tried Molotow liquid chrome? They are marker pens but you can pour the chrome into an airbrush and spray it. They also have a refill pack that you can use easily with airbrushes. I find that its has the best finish. Just super un-durable. Also, maybe like other have suggested, try to de-can the paint and try using airbrushes?
I do have a Molotow marker here. I will be doing a test video on it soon. I'll try the Aqua Gloss on it too and see if that protects it also
where do you buy alclad at and what kind of air brush do you recommend?
I use a Badger Patriot 105 most of the time now. Also a GSI Creos Procon Boy Platinum. You can get those and Alclad here
spraygunner.com?aff=10
I think that maybe those larger spray cans and "Tagging " paints for grafitti artists and are very high pressure cans to put out a lot of paint in a short time and most surfaces thay paint on are rough walls. try spraying into a smaller bottle and use it through an airbrush and you may get better results
How do you spell orclad? Trying to look it up but I'm sure im spelling it wrong...
What do you recommend me to turn a black plastic into chrome on a grille?
Have you seen my latest video on Spaz Stix Spray Can Mirror Chrome? Problem is with most of the stuff I test it's for models or indoor use only
Did you try adding clear coat ???
Im no expert and this is just my thought process but the finish of IronLak reminds me of "Hammerite" paint.. maybe thats why it is textured so heavily. Depends what finish you are looking for i guess.. Hammerite is pretty rough & tough stuff 🙂
What is name of airbrush chrome paint bottle that you mention?? Thank you.
Alclad. Ive posted several videos on airbrush chrome. Check out my channel under videos, there's at least 3 to 4 videos on all the brands if airbrush chrome I have, some are very good
Hy, nice video! I have a problem... i painted plastic many times with chrome effect spray, the result is amazing its mirror effect...BUT..... after 24h if i take the piece my finger prints stay on... i tried with plastic primer before the chrome effect and without, and with plastic primer then grey coat and after it dryes then with chrome effect spray, and NO MATTER WHAT my finger prints stays on that stuf...its like it never dries full....PLEASE HELP ME !!!
Tacky paint after 24 hours is usually a symptom of too much paint. You'll have to apply the paint differently than I do here. Here I just want to see what the chrome looks like so I just throw the paint on. You must put it on in several light layers. Spray on a very light coating and let it dry. Then put on another very light coat and let that fully dry. Keep doing this till you get the color you want. The fewer the coats the better. But go super light coats and it must fully dry between coats.
you need to try out some Asla Easy Chrome. it's super expensive though.
Guys the ONLY good chrome spray I've ever used was the old Testors enamel chrome. The reason it is the best is that it was an ENAMEL, which skins over and creates its own gloss finish without needing a base. The only downside is that you need to spray on thick so it has room to skin over.
Check out my review for Green Stuff World Chrome, that stuff is incredible
In their defense, it does match the cap. Also, it is useful to apply clear coat. U know like how car paint doesn't look like much till it's clear
Whats the spray bottles called
I took a shot in the dark and bought the cheap testers Chrome lucky me 👍🏿
Try and decant it then airbrush it. That might get better results
@@barbatosrex9473 thank you I would like a shop card if you have any
Hi, Which is the shiny most chrome like one in frame 22:09?
Green Stuff World, Alclad, SMS Hyperchrome and Revell Chrome Spray paint are the best
You should do a Gold Rush video testing all the golds out there...
I'll add it to my list
Which was the one you call "Gaya Chrome"?
Here is the Gaia Chrome video
ruclips.net/video/T9ocepNSx9U/видео.html
Great video.where can i get the best black chrome uve tested and whats the name
Did you see my latest video test of Spaz Stix Mirror Chrome? I did like that one very much. As far as airbrushing goes it's Alclad Black Chrome all the way
@@barbatosrex9473 i just found ur channel.will sub and check it out.thanks for the reply👌🏾
What was the humidity level when you painted all those spoons???????????
It was a while ago but I'm in a climate controlled environment. Air conditioned
What’s the best clear coat in a can you think?
I've had good luck with many of them but I do like Mr Color and Gaia's clear coats. And the Alclad Clear Kote works great and it's a good value as they come in large bottles. If it's spray cans I'd go with Tamiya or Mr Color
Bro i dont wanne h8 but did u try a well closed crate whit water and chrome sprayed paint aka chrome dipping idunno how to explain but maybe it will work did u try chrome dipping (no h8)
If so i wanne see a vid from the youtuber
@@hannesvanaspert109 that's more of an actual auto technique for actual car parts, I focus on model building but I will ask my brother who paints cars if I can do that at home for my models
There is an excellent chrome spray paint Dollar General stores carry. It's not a name brand and it smells like mothballs but it's the best I've found and cheap.
I will look for that
You have enough paint to paint a whole house 😃
2 houses 😉
@@barbatosrex9473 you have enough for both of them. Gee! I never saw so much paint containers
That does look like a trans am rim or something haha the gold
I have a gold can of the Ironlak and it did not look like yours. I sprayed it on a ring that I 3d printed on a resin printer. The color was uniform but not as bright.
Why when i spray Chrome on plastic after half an hour drying when i touch on the painted surfice my finger prints apear and it's prepering all over again sanding and cleaning. Guys give me some advice 🙏🙏🙏
Any type of chrome paint takes a very long time to cure. At least a week.
@@barbatosrex9473 Then I will wait, I was afraid that i'm doing something wrong, thanks 🤝
Would you sir, do another test for us? Glue a straw with superglue or hot glue to the nozzle from the can. Then pour each paint separately into the airbrush. Do the same experiment, this time only on gloss black with an airbrush veeeery tiny layer. Way too much paint goes out of the can at once. This will work Greetings
Good idea, I will work on that
I think it's the fact that the paint is mixed in with the pressurized air. All cans are the same even colours.
I do however love how the Tamiya sprays come out. Have you seen my video on Tamiya Metal Colors? Such a higher quality than these for sure.
I know this is a bit late but you can get custom spray tips for paint and throw those garbage factory tips in the can of the same namesake.
I've seen spare and replaceable caps but not sure which brand
@@barbatosrex9473 Not saying it will come out any more chrome but it wont spray like garbage Montana, liquitex, fat caps there are a few. mixing makes a big diff as well. Just like you said with the heating the cans a bit get a spray can mixer it goes on a drill. mixes way better. If your handy make one
Would you lacquer after or are these paints durable as they are?
These are fairly durable. Keep in mind that after you clear coat these they no longer have that chrome look
@@barbatosrex9473 Yeah it's a toughie. I've been scouring RUclips and it seems no one had any success with a mirror chrome spray can, the best people got was with a spray gun.
I've tried various "Chrome" finishes over the past 45 years and none of them look like a mirror, just varying shades of silver paint. I see a new one come on the market every so often but don't even bother trying it.
If you don't mind airbrushing, you can get a great mirror finish from chrome paints but I have yet to see a spray can have a mirror result.
Hi Am know expert by far but if it were me having the trouble of the cans spitting ,out the paint for a better word I would transfer the paint into a brush for better results, As the 6 buck bottle was a a bargain it would be a pity not to try it ,
Spaztix 👍
maybe decant paints and spray out of airbrush. hwmetal did this with liquid chrome pen with good results.
