I’d already been out of Shalamar for 5 years so I didn’t understand mention of my former group- by the time my second solo album was released (from which Friends came) after winning Best New Artist Grammy in 1987 for my monumental trendsetting multiple platinum solo debut establishing Jody Watley in the solo aa a formidable artist in my own right. Your video chronicling this evolution is worthwhile though Mariah Carey was able to popularize it for sure and no doubt however Rakim & I were definitely there first with as Okayplayer magazine noted with little fanfare as the groundbreaking single nand collaboration it was and IS in music history.
