"The pilots are blinded and can't fly any further." Yes. They have to pull over, park on a cloud and wait until their sight gets better. Or drink a healing potion if they are in a hurry. However, luckily there's always a cloud nearby when there's lightning. Seriously what are some people thinking?
Mikosch2 At my local airfield we had a student pilot in a glider flying as rain is starting to fall so he asks vie tge radios what to do (obviously fly a bit faster and mybe open the small window if the windscreen fogs up). So our FI that day said to him: Park on the right, get out and wash the windscreen.
Considering that there are now people who think that potatoes grow like strawberries above the ground, and that meat actually comes from ''the store'', it sadly does not really surprise me that much that anyone would believe in this sort of rumor.
It is now forbidden to park on clouds, it will damage the data centers which are hidden in them. It is advised to use a normal eye-patch to always keep one eye adapted to the darkness. A parrot on the shoulder can be used to warn you when something happens on the side with the eye-patch and it can give answers while the -pirate- pilot is -sleeping- thinking.
How blinding is a lightning strike on the front of a plane like that if its a night flight? Turn up instrument lights till you recover? A period of a few or many seconds where you cant even see instruments?
Many, many years ago my ex-wife and I were on climb-out from New Orleans. We were in a Southwest Airlines 737-200 with the rear-facing seats at the bulkheads. Hated those. Who wants to stare at seventy-five plus people or worse yet hae them looking at you. Anyway ---- BOOM! Just after 9-11. Everyone screams. I jump, but simultaneously see a flash of light. We were hit by lightning. I saw it hit near the tail.I reassured everyone I could it was only lightning and we'd be fine. "Are you sure?" "Yup". Fifteen minutes later Captain says, "We were hit by lightning. Our aircraft is fine. Please try to relax." One thing, it was REALLY LOUD! And if you did not see the lightning, you would think 'bomb'.
No joke. If I were to be in the cockpit and heard that I'd laugh hysterically. I've done high voltage experiments (which are like a AA battery compared to lightning) before and they never sounded like that.
Been at this museum two years ago. Really pays off the visit! Actually, I've got impressed by the amount of information that this museum holds. Congrats Joe! Keep up the good work as this channel is one of the best channels concerning aviation matter.
01:22 Mean, MEAN, *_MEAN!_* LOL. ...On a different note: the Deutsche Museum is truly a must-see. If anyone has the slightest chance of going there, don't think twice, just do it. You'll thank yourself later.
I were there several times. Im Bavarian so can just use the train. But it is totally worth it. You can spend das and das in it and always See some thing New.
Love your channel so much Joe. Thanks for explaining otherwise difficult to understand topics in plain English and fostering my passion for aviation. Keep it up! :)
My neighbor flies for AA, and says that during the summer months, virtually every plane they have gets struck at least once a month. (Especially south eastern flights, lots of thunderstorms ;-) They remove the plane from service for inspection, then back in the air it goes :-) I was quite surprised at how frequent lightning strikes are in commercial aviation... Fly safe Capt. Joe :-)
I love your Channel Joe! Even though I’m not a pilot or in flight school I like to fly with the flight simulator and all your information are very important to me. I think it’d be awesome for your channel to have a “Flight School” where you teach to fly airliners from the basics to advanced level. Again amazing, amazing, amazing!!! 💪
One of your best videos yet Joe! I love the scientific explanation with the demo. I've got a question, and if you see this comment let me know so I can ask!
Captain Joe In the RAT video I noticed when it opened it looked like some sort of chaff or serial number aphids fell out as well. Is this so the authorities can track approximately where the RAT was deployed?
HI Captain Joe, this is a great video, like all your others, but your explanation of how the Faraday cage isn't quite right. The electrons don't really flow on the outside of the metal skin, they flow all through it. (The transient frequencies in the strike are usually not high enough to get the RF skin effect that you may be thinking of.) What's happening is that the entire airplane jumps up to the voltage of the lightning. That's OK because it is not VOLTAGE that injures you, it is CURRENT passing through your body. Faraday figured out that if you are inside a metal cage, the voltage everywhere around you on the cage is the same (but very high). But because there is no voltage DIFFERENCE across one side of the cage to the other (for perfect conductors), there can be no voltage differences INSIDE the cage, and so no current flows through the occupants. That's why you didn't feel anything. But your body and the plane were at 200,000 volts above earth potential for a brief moment anyway! The damage to the plane is caused when the current concentrates through a small area of fuselage. The metal does have a small amount of resistance - just enough that the high current causes local heating and melting, which is what causes the damage. Keep up the great videos!
Actually it is the ENERGY that kills you. But more importantly, you are mistaking POTENTIAL for VOLTAGE. Voltage by definition is a potential difference. The plane and you are on the same potential, hence there is no voltage between the two and therefore no current flows through you.
A question: how do pilots calculate the rate of descent, how fast do planes descend and at what point in the journey do they begin the descent to land?
Ideally (assuming you don't get altitude restrictions from ATC) you want to descend at a rate where the cabin altitude (planes are pressurized and the cabin altitude is not the actual altitude.) Descends at roughly 500ft per minute (the plane could be descending at 1500+ fpm.) As that is most comfortable for the passengers ears/ sinuses. So it's just height to be lost/ 500fpm to give you how early to descend.
Great video thanks for it! I always wondered what happens if the plane get hit bu a lightning not about the damage actually but about the noise . So can you please tell, from 1-10, how loud is it when it hits the plane?
Hi Joe! I was wondering if I could apply for pilot jobs with a Frozen ATPL and if not how to gain the sufficilight flight hours to unfreeze it. Thanks.

Nothing. Engineers though of that a long time ago already. For instance the whole vertical stabilizer of the A300 was already made of composites. They simply integrate a fine metal mesh basically under the most outer layer of the composite material which then restores the necessary conductivity.
In terms of electrical engineering, the experiment is interesting, but not decisive for proving the safety of aircraft. A lightning strike is measured by strength of millions of volts and millions of amps , which is thousands times greater value of these that were used in the experiment. Strong electric current of the lightning even if it does not pass into the interior of aircraft, can cause serious physical damage to the fuselage.
Midi Play Box The thing is you don't have the millions of volts "flowing" through the plane. The volts are spread along the whole distance between the clouds and the ground. Because of that there is only a voltage in the thousands applied to the Plane. The amls are also not that much of a problem since metals are good conductors and airplanes have good air coolant. PS: If you take a sausage and connect it to the socket (one cable to one end the other one to the other) you can stick LEDs inside it and they will light up without getting blown, because the voltage dropes over the whole distance of the sausage. You can also cook pretty fast... but don't do it...
Mechanic here. The repair for entry and exit wounds for lightning strikes is pretty interesting. All we do is drill a clean hole in the fuselage and plug it with a single sealed rivet. If you ever notice random out-of-place button heads on your otherwise-smooth fuselage, those are lightning repairs!
@@billsmith1770 Lightning rarely enters or exits over the wet wing. Strikes to the wing usually terminate near the tips and static wicks. Though repairs to the tanks are basically the same, just with more attention payed to the sealant inside the tank.
Captain Joe love the video + that must of been scary because what if it went wrong 😂😂 also u tort me about reverse thrust and my plane used it so I know what it is now

Thanks Captain Joe for this awesome lightning demonstration, very cool.Ive never been hit while on any flight as of now. Also those travel cases look pretty nice I just might need to get me one. Thanks take care all the best!
Another great video again Joe and very informative,as a mechanical engineer I've always wondered does a pilot need a vast amount of technical knowledge how a plane operates and functions.👍
Fascinating segment Joe, the Away luggage is really attractive, and it is outstanding for them to have included a charging port. I've sat on many cold airport floors trying to get a charge. You are right about German engineering... I drive a BMW. Best car I've ever had.
Hey Joe! I have to tell you! I know your channel for about one year now and in this time i went from "I don't like to fly" to "omg I need to stay at the window and need to see the airplane at the gate, to see the crew doing stuff I learnd from you" Its pretty amusing how "streange" things are becoming normal because i know whats going on thanks to you. So Thanks for that. Everytime I board an airberlin plane form ZHR to DUS or back I hope the captain is going to announce himself as "joe" ^^
Thanks Capatain Joe for this nice video. I have a little remark: The reason why you can touch the inside surface of the steel cage is not so much that electrons will travel outside, but due to the fact that your body resistance is much much bigger than the resistance of the steel. It could be a problem if planes were made out of non conducting materials.
"The pilots are blinded and can't fly any further."
Yes. They have to pull over, park on a cloud and wait until their sight gets better. Or drink a healing potion if they are in a hurry. However, luckily there's always a cloud nearby when there's lightning.
Seriously what are some people thinking?
So you´ve heard those rumours too :)

Awesome vid as always Joe! Keep up the great work mate :) would love to visit Munich!
Have a great weekend Joe!
Thanks, I´m invited to a great wedding of one of my closest friends :)
The lighting cage though. I'm thinking u signed away your life in case something went wrong 😐😌 cause that's kinda scary
I had to sign some papers yes, but all was good :)
Captain Joe well the fact that the video was completed then of course... 😁 Thanks for the demo, better you than me. Dwl

type rating is just what "type" of aircraft you can fly. much like with drivers licenses have different types, such as personal, commercial (big rig), trasporation, etc. with Pilot type rating, it's just aircraft (single engine, jets, instrumens, etc..)
A type rating is the permission to fly a specific aircraft (Boeing 737, Airbus A320 etc.) In general aviation aircraft they are usually not required.

Why in A320 you need to turn off pack 1 and pack 2 before takeoff?
You don´t have to, only if you need extra power!
thanks, but wizz air pilots still turn them off, on 3 km runway in EPGD
I can hear that, as passenger

If u hear about any accident of an a380 next wednesday I will be dead
What happens if an airplane hits a tree during takeoff?
please end me crash
please end me and a tree would just jump between the runway while take off right
The tree bounces off the plane as the plane enters a alternate dimension as a black-hole is formed

Another great video again Joe and very informative,as a mechanical engineer I've always wondered does a pilot need a vast amount of technical knowledge how a plane operates and functions.👍
this guy has such a positive vibe - amazing
Great video!
Fascinating segment Joe, the Away luggage is really attractive, and it is outstanding for them to have included a charging port. I've sat on many cold airport floors trying to get a charge. You are right about German engineering... I drive a BMW. Best car I've ever had.
Great explanation
Like learning about planes and pilot, awesome videos keep doing them. A big shout out from Argentina
Love your videos joe
Really cool video!
Cap, just popping in to thank you for a brilliant video, as usual. Liebe grusse!
Thanks Joe...I would really want to study and watch ALL of your videos!!!!
I love your video they always motivating me
Thanks Capatain Joe for this nice video.
I have a little remark: The reason why you can touch the inside surface of the steel cage is not so much that electrons will travel outside, but due to the fact that your body resistance is much much bigger than the resistance of the steel.
It could be a problem if planes were made out of non conducting materials.
love your channel
captain! you always been great.
