    "The pilots are blinded and can't fly any further."
    Yes. They have to pull over, park on a cloud and wait until their sight gets better. Or drink a healing potion if they are in a hurry. However, luckily there's always a cloud nearby when there's lightning.
    Seriously what are some people thinking?

      Mikosch2 At my local airfield we had a student pilot in a glider flying as rain is starting to fall so he asks vie tge radios what to do (obviously fly a bit faster and mybe open the small window if the windscreen fogs up). So our FI that day said to him: Park on the right, get out and wash the windscreen.

      Considering that there are now people who think that potatoes grow like strawberries above the ground, and that meat actually comes from ''the store'', it sadly does not really surprise me that much that anyone would believe in this sort of rumor.

      It is now forbidden to park on clouds, it will damage the data centers which are hidden in them. It is advised to use a normal eye-patch to always keep one eye adapted to the darkness. A parrot on the shoulder can be used to warn you when something happens on the side with the eye-patch and it can give answers while the -pirate- pilot is -sleeping- thinking.

      How blinding is a lightning strike on the front of a plane like that if its a night flight? Turn up instrument lights till you recover? A period of a few or many seconds where you cant even see instruments?

    Many, many years ago my ex-wife and I were on climb-out from New Orleans. We were in a Southwest Airlines 737-200 with the rear-facing seats at the bulkheads. Hated those. Who wants to stare at seventy-five plus people or worse yet hae them looking at you.
    Anyway ---- BOOM! Just after 9-11. Everyone screams. I jump, but simultaneously see a flash of light. We were hit by lightning. I saw it hit near the tail.I reassured everyone I could it was only lightning and we'd be fine. "Are you sure?" "Yup". Fifteen minutes later Captain says, "We were hit by lightning. Our aircraft is fine. Please try to relax."
    One thing, it was REALLY LOUD! And if you did not see the lightning, you would think 'bomb'.

    My neighbor flies for AA, and says that during the summer months, virtually every plane they have gets struck at least once a month. (Especially south eastern flights, lots of thunderstorms ;-) They remove the plane from service for inspection, then back in the air it goes :-) I was quite surprised at how frequent lightning strikes are in commercial aviation... Fly safe Capt. Joe :-)

    HI Captain Joe, this is a great video, like all your others, but your explanation of how the Faraday cage isn't quite right. The electrons don't really flow on the outside of the metal skin, they flow all through it. (The transient frequencies in the strike are usually not high enough to get the RF skin effect that you may be thinking of.) What's happening is that the entire airplane jumps up to the voltage of the lightning. That's OK because it is not VOLTAGE that injures you, it is CURRENT passing through your body. Faraday figured out that if you are inside a metal cage, the voltage everywhere around you on the cage is the same (but very high). But because there is no voltage DIFFERENCE across one side of the cage to the other (for perfect conductors), there can be no voltage differences INSIDE the cage, and so no current flows through the occupants. That's why you didn't feel anything. But your body and the plane were at 200,000 volts above earth potential for a brief moment anyway! The damage to the plane is caused when the current concentrates through a small area of fuselage. The metal does have a small amount of resistance - just enough that the high current causes local heating and melting, which is what causes the damage. Keep up the great videos!

    • @YouPlague
      @YouPlague 5 лет назад +2

      Actually it is the ENERGY that kills you. But more importantly, you are mistaking POTENTIAL for VOLTAGE. Voltage by definition is a potential difference. The plane and you are on the same potential, hence there is no voltage between the two and therefore no current flows through you.

    A question: how do pilots calculate the rate of descent, how fast do planes descend and at what point in the journey do they begin the descent to land?

    • @Valantir
      @Valantir 5 лет назад

      Ideally (assuming you don't get altitude restrictions from ATC) you want to descend at a rate where the cabin altitude (planes are pressurized and the cabin altitude is not the actual altitude.) Descends at roughly 500ft per minute (the plane could be descending at 1500+ fpm.) As that is most comfortable for the passengers ears/ sinuses. So it's just height to be lost/ 500fpm to give you how early to descend.

      @WhatnotSoforth 5 лет назад

      Bikestail er I've been considering becoming a professional pilot myself. I have only flown on planes but I'm passionate about them.
      I have a degree in precision machinery and graduated top of my class. I credit my success to passion and dedication in that field, taking pride in what I was doing and just doing the best job I could no matter what. The most important thing I can say when it comes to any schooling is that if you like it and want to succeed, you can.
      Pay utmost attention in class and take notes! (Why waste your time and money?) Dedicated self-study shows you want to succeed. If 2-3 hours is what it takes, you will succeed. If you want more, you will want to make time for even more study.
      I think you are on the right heading, as it were. Go download the Cessna 172 manual and read every page and try to understand as much as you can! If you can do that even before you step foot in a classroom, that's dedication!
      And hey, you are already doing the right thing watching Captain Joe :)
      Clear skies and smooth air, have a good day!

    • @GhostHostMemories
      @GhostHostMemories 6 лет назад

      type rating is just what "type" of aircraft you can fly. much like with drivers licenses have different types, such as personal, commercial (big rig), trasporation, etc. with Pilot type rating, it's just aircraft (single engine, jets, instrumens, etc..)

    • @lauritshillemann3840
      @lauritshillemann3840 6 лет назад +5

      A type rating is the permission to fly a specific aircraft (Boeing 737, Airbus A320 etc.) In general aviation aircraft they are usually not required.

    • @shi01
      @shi01 6 лет назад +12

      Nothing. Engineers though of that a long time ago already. For instance the whole vertical stabilizer of the A300 was already made of composites.
      They simply integrate a fine metal mesh basically under the most outer layer of the composite material which then restores the necessary conductivity.

    • @midiplaybox3453

      In terms of electrical engineering, the experiment is interesting, but not decisive for proving the safety of aircraft. A lightning strike is measured by strength of millions of volts and millions of amps , which is thousands times greater value of these that were used in the experiment. Strong electric current of the lightning even if it does not pass into the interior of aircraft, can cause serious physical damage to the fuselage.

    • @12988Jake
      @12988Jake 6 лет назад +2

      shi01 that's right, I think it has a copper mesh system to 'soak up' the lightning

    • @mathewcherrystone9479
      @mathewcherrystone9479 6 лет назад +3

      Midi Play Box The thing is you don't have the millions of volts "flowing" through the plane. The volts are spread along the whole distance between the clouds and the ground. Because of that there is only a voltage in the thousands applied to the Plane. The amls are also not that much of a problem since metals are good conductors and airplanes have good air coolant.
      PS: If you take a sausage and connect it to the socket (one cable to one end the other one to the other) you can stick LEDs inside it and they will light up without getting blown, because the voltage dropes over the whole distance of the sausage. You can also cook pretty fast... but don't do it...

      just good banter. Captain Joe is an Airbus guy, so he has to dig at Boeing. Boeing "needs" an advocate. :-)

    Mechanic here. The repair for entry and exit wounds for lightning strikes is pretty interesting. All we do is drill a clean hole in the fuselage and plug it with a single sealed rivet. If you ever notice random out-of-place button heads on your otherwise-smooth fuselage, those are lightning repairs!

    • @SanctuaryReintegrate
      @SanctuaryReintegrate 4 года назад +1

      @@billsmith1770 Lightning rarely enters or exits over the wet wing. Strikes to the wing usually terminate near the tips and static wicks. Though repairs to the tanks are basically the same, just with more attention payed to the sealant inside the tank.

    Fascinating segment Joe, the Away luggage is really attractive, and it is outstanding for them to have included a charging port. I've sat on many cold airport floors trying to get a charge. You are right about German engineering... I drive a BMW. Best car I've ever had.

    Hey Joe! I have to tell you! I know your channel for about one year now and in this time i went from "I don't like to fly" to "omg I need to stay at the window and need to see the airplane at the gate, to see the crew doing stuff I learnd from you" Its pretty amusing how "streange" things are becoming normal because i know whats going on thanks to you. So Thanks for that.
    Everytime I board an airberlin plane form ZHR to DUS or back I hope the captain is going to announce himself as "joe" ^^

    Thanks Capatain Joe for this nice video.
    I have a little remark: The reason why you can touch the inside surface of the steel cage is not so much that electrons will travel outside, but due to the fact that your body resistance is much much bigger than the resistance of the steel.
    It could be a problem if planes were made out of non conducting materials.
