  • Joyce DiDonato embarks on a winter journey with pianist Yannick Nézet-Séguin in this collaboration, which views Schubert's Winterreise song cycle through new eyes. Discover: w.lnk.to/winte...
By reinterpreting this masterful work from the view of the woman in the story, Joyce creates "a parallel journey between the man’s words and emotions, and then the woman’s experience of them," with the piano itself, in a way, taking on the role Schubert’s original protagonist.
As Fiona Maddocks of The Guardian wrote: "Drawing on her formidable range of vocal colour, DiDonato captures the drama within each song, and across the cycle ... Any fan will enjoy the insight DiDonato brings."

I've been reading posts on other videoclips of DiDonato's performance of Schubert's Winterreise and I confess to being surprised by the continued objections to this music being performed by a woman , especially given the number of estimable (and in some cases, classic) recordings by both mezzo sopranos and sopranos. Soprano Christine Schafer's version is gripping, to say nothing of the recordings by mezzos Brigitte Fassbaender, Christia Ludwig, Alice Coote, and (my personal favorite) Nathalie Stutzmann. DiDonato's performance is both beautiful and harrowing. I recall the review in the New York Times was not convinced by the concept driving DiDonato's performance at Carnegie Hall (which had the singer--reminiscent of the Letter Scene in Massenet's "Werther"--reading the letters and responding empathetically to the shifting emotional states of the writer--except for the last piece, the one recorded here, in which the singer merges completely with the writer's voice. None of this matters in the audio recording, of course; and the video of this specific song, at least, does enable one to see DiDonato's extraordinarily expressive persona. I wouldn't want to be without this.

O Mirabilis! Mrs DiDonato is such a virtuoso vocalist, who I have grown up and worshipping, to perform and master this so elegant and well-written piece. Her voice and technique are spotless to suit the sometimes romantic and sometimes heroic character of Schubert's Winterreise.

It sounds like she might have been a few semitones off, but it seems to have been more breathy than any pitch issue. Also, idk how much of that was stylistic or accidental

As much as I like JdD in other things - this is a no for me. Various mistakes in the text (I mean big mistakes and not just pronounciation) and for me this whole cycle simply doesn't work if it is sung by a mezzo. There are other Lieder where it is fine, but this cycle loses all its depth that way. Also not happy with the accompaniment. I am most fond of Peter Mattei and Lars David Nilsen's recording of this, the most nuanced and perfect record I own (not just of the Winterreise, I mean in general).

Maybe you just haven’t heard the right mezzo / contralto?
