      You misunderstand what I'm saying. You in the UK actually run a trade deficit with Germany. Because you run a large trade surplus with Ireland, we pump a net amount of money into the British economy, some of which ends up in the exchequer in corporation and income tax. Of course, this also supports British jobs. We give you your biggest TS in Europe and it more than pays for the RN and RAF support you give us. Irish airspace is only an extra 15% on top of the UK's anyway and we are cheap to defend since the RAF already defends Northern Ireland.

    An absolute total and utter joke and it's not funny we are more than capable of purchasing capable naval vessels that have undersea surveillance capabilities and surface capabilities along with the capability to engage if the need does arises as for our Air Defence well what Air Defence it's doesn't exist an army is merely equipped.
    But it doesn't matter how much equipment you have if you do not have the personnel to operate it so why the government cannot fix the pay issues is beyond me and beyond anyone else but as usual is another Irish government mess up. If you were to compare the Croatian armed forces to the Irish defence forces the Irish defence forces are no more than a Coastguard. Croatia has about the same defence budget but 10 times better equipment and with the same amount of personnel. Yes there a NATO member but that makes absolutely no difference. It's nothing but excuses excuses and more excuses.
    What needs to happen is we need to purchase 1 squadron of modern fighter interceptors modern Air Defence systems and a modern air surveillance system.
    We need to purchase roughly 4 vessels similar to a corvette or a frigate and also two more capable ocean-going Patrol vessels. We need to purchase more capable and in a larger quantity of asw maritime Patrol aircraft.
    Our army needs increased in size too at least 8000 personnel combined they need to sort the pay out in all three services and stop messing around. our soldiers need new equipment such as new helmets and body armour new primary and secondary firearms and a larger quantity of ammunition/supplies because at the moment we can about Sustainer ourselves for two weeks. There needs to be a complete overhaul of the defence forces. It will cost a lot of money at the Beginning but once the money has been spent and spent wisely then we will have a robust defence forces to defend our national infrastructure and our national Security. Against any threats of any kind. Wether that be from sea or air and those threats are there. Because unfortunately in this day and age if you want to live in a peaceful and safe country. You have to have some form of national defence. And let's just say for some mad reason the Russians decided to attack us the UK and the US are going to do absolutely nothing about it and that goes to the rest of Europe. And say a World War 3 did start it makes no difference if we are in NATO or not we would still be a legitimate target.
    And anyone who comes up with the point. what's the point of spending all that money when we are defenceless does that mean that Singapore and Taiwan 2 island nations are totally defenceless too. Do your research before commenting.
    Also the attitude towards the army the Air Corps in the Navy in the general public needs to change we are the only country I have ever seen this attitude in. And the attitude of the general public towards our defence forces is more than disgusting.

      You speak a lot of Sence. I would also add that Ireland would benefit from forming an operational level "joint maritime command" with personnel and assets from the Irish Naval service,Irish Air corps and the Irish army who's task is purely to monitor,manage and defend irish waters (including subsurface infrastructure) from possible attack, espionage or sabotage.

    • @Joker-yw9hl
      @Joker-yw9hl Год назад +1

      Honestly Ireland only really needs to procure 8-12 light attack aircraft like the Leonardo M346fa and ensure personnel from all branches are properly paid, trained and equipped. The Samuel Beckett Class offshore patrol vessels are excellent. Maybe half a dozen more helicopters and we're all set.
      I would take issue with the comment that the US and UK would not get involved if Ireland were attacked, though. It's a touchy subject for Irish I know, but the unspoken agreement regarding Ireland's independence is that its security from continental aggression is guaranteed by the United Kingdom. There is a reason why Ireland deliberately spends as little as possible on defence - it doesn't *need* to. It's absolutely 100% in Britain's interest to keep Ireland in its back yard, so to speak. While Britain has historically been the aggressor and main threat to Ireland, it's also what enables Ireland to live comfortably detached from the geopolitics of the continent. Eire is shielded by Britannia, but similarly Eire is the garden that cannot be trespassed.
      I do agree with you though, that in order to be truly independent Ireland should be able to rely on its own capabilities to patrol its Exclusive Economic Zone. It needn't go crazy with military expenditure, but a budget approximating 0.75 to 1 per cent of GDP would be a lot better than current defence spending

Kinda like New Zealand (these two need to do joint acquisitions of weapons systems since their budgets and Armed forces are similar) what do they need, both need an air force in some form that can operate from land bases and sea platforms similar to how the RN and RAF was both using the Harriers(if need be, probably will need it) preferably a vtol aircraft, no, not the F35, Harriers or some new vtol similar to capability of the Harriers but 21st Century design and affordable (that way they can buy enough to be operationally effective, instead of buying 12 or less,smh) getting Harriers will be best because most nations will give it to them or sell it to them at reduced cost, the savings can be spent into modernizing or fully restoring the airframe to zero hour specs . Vtols can operate from any airfield platform or runway, making them ideal for nationa with restrained budgets like Ireland and New Zealand, especially since they are island nations, also both should invest in their Expeditionary capabilities with lpd's of some sort, the NZDFN have the Canterbury Class LPD that can be built for both navies, an evolved form of the ship that can engage in the modern maritime combat environment , unlike the current vessel, will be apart of an evolved form of this vessel, a total of four (two per nation) ideally along with these will be a light carrier in the guise of the Principe de Austrias or Chakri Narubet Class to serve in the Sea Control role as envisioned by Admiral Zumwalt. This will enhance the capability of both navies a mobile platform for the Harriers or similar vtol and serve in HADR operations as well, a total of two vessels (1 per nation) viable escorts will be needed but more importantly vessels that can tactically operate alone with sensors and weapons that will allow for it to engage both maritime and land threats , a true surface combatant, New Zealand have their with the Anzac Class, the Irish Navy need that capability, the RAN just retired some frigates (Oliver Hazard Perry clones) that will fit that need, two of them to complement what the Irish Navy already have in inventory but that will bring more lethality to their fleet. I know budgets and politics play a role in this but reality should also add to the thinking process as well, thinking outside the box is a great thing, joint purchases of equipment with other nations will become the norm because of mutual benefits, those benefits will let both nations gain access to capabilities and assets militarily together, that would have been harder alone, again this is only an idea based upon what can be seen globally with nations like Ireland struggling to meet their security needs because of budgets. There are plenty of systems land air and sea that are being phased out for newer systems that Defense Forces have access to for example Irish Army uses wheeled LAV's but lack a dedicated FSV version of them ,the Belgian Land Component (Army) have DF 90's that are being replaced, the DF 90 is the same vehicle(Mowag Piranha III)that the Irish Army uses but armed with a 90mm cannon why not obtain these in order to improve the lethality of their Cavalry forces and add that direct fires element to support ground combat operations in general. Also the ASLAV of Australia is being replaced, reach out for a few modernize them with sensors and armaments (add atgm's or loitering munitions) as should be done across the board (distributed lethality) both (New Zealand and Ireland) Defense Forces need a surge in recruitment in order to truly meet their Defense needs, but must complement that with capability (equipment) what motivates a person willingness to serve their country knowing that they will have the resources and incentive to do so. Both of them need to invest in and raise up better Expeditionary forces (RDF) that will have Airborne/Air Assault and amphibious capabilites an elite force that can deploy in numbers on short notice to critical combat situations and be able to sustain themselves until follow up forces can arrive, again the capability must be met by the availability of the equipment to carry out the missions. Thoughts

    I got the impression Russia sees Ireland either as the weak link or just as a desirable place to potentially occupy and launch attacks on the rest of Europe for logistical or strategic reasons when he was flying fighters through there and y’all’s poor fishermen were having to mount diplomatic interventions to prevent armed war games in their waters last year. It kind of freaked me out to learn how vulnerable ireland is even though I’m in the US. I hope Ireland knows you don’t have to abandon the wholesome side of your famous neutrality just because you make a serious effort to make your land defensible for the sake of yourselves and the west in general. I was so glad to hear you increased your budget and are getting radar and hopefully guns. It doesn’t mean you have to go marauding like Vikings just because you try to secure your country from disaster in times like these. I trust the Irish not to abuse a bigger military more than most. Here’s hoping you can grow your military might while avoiding world morality police syndrome. 🍻

Perhaps 8 would do, but even 6 might be fine. Don't need to go mad, just have some capability at least. Ireland should be able to properly patrol and intercept within its own exclusive economic zone. Let's tackle the false premise from the start - Russia is not in any form a threat to our country. The reason they have taken military action in Ukraine is due to the aggressive stance of the US. The US orchestrated a coup back in 2014 in Ukraine. All the while openly talking about their plans to regime change in Russia for years and Ukraine being the doorway to that.
    The US is the one that does violent revolutions everywhere across the globe and suffers no consequences for their constant breaking of international laws. They are the ones we need to be wary of. The US is the country that just engaged in terrorism against a supposed ally in Germany - they bombed critical infastructure (Nordstream pipeline) either with their own military assets which are all over that area or they used a proxy - one of their vassel states such as the UK or Poland.
