Every independent nation must be able to defend itself. Irish ppl agree on that, surely? Else, what was the point of Independence from Britain 100 years ago? Even Ireland, with its fortuitous geography, has to be able to defend its national territory. If not, why have an army, navy or air corps in the first place? If ppl.can agree, some defense is needed, which is national policy, then the question is how much defense? Enough that Ireland doesn't have to call the RAF when Russian bombers enter Irish airspace. Enough naval power to ensure the Russian war ships off Donegal, Cork and Galway don't sabotage the sub sea cables. Every other neutral country is armed to the teeth and able to defend themselves, e.g Sweden, Switzerland, Austria. Ireland is a complete oddity in the developed world in defense matters. I am saying, to be a fully sovereign, independent nation, the ability to defend yourself is part of the package. Sanctimonious self congratulations on UN peace keeping efforts is masking the reality that the country is effectively defenseless. As one of the speakers correctly said, freeloading. Shameful.
Off you pop. Send us pictures from the battlefield. Oh brave warrior of the Keys. What warzone have you been in? Sorry I assumed you had experience in war. You ran your mouth like you do. I think a new rule is you and people like you along with your sons brothers and nephews should be put to a front line. I mean, you wouldn't have any objections? Surely that would be hypocritical?
Be neutral if you want but put your money where your mouth is and pay for it. You can't rely on the US, Britain or NATO to help us. If we're so mature then act it and stand on your own two feet. We have to pay for our neutrality 2 or 3 % of our 504 billion would be about 10 billion. if you're going to spend so much why not join NATO, your money goes a lot further. Neutrality isn't a free ride. I think neutrality made sense when the country was developing but not now as a mature state we need to take our place among the nations of the world.
There was a High court case (Horgan V. Ireland, I think) where the court decided that the use of Shannon by the U.S. military beached our neutrality but was legal with the permission of the Dáil. Anybody who feels we should help Ukraine is free to go there and fight themselves.

@@saveliyfilistovich No it's not and here's why the definition of neutrality is not supporting or helping either side in a conflict, disagreement etc, from the Oxford university dictionary 😂
Has Ireland no self respect? Switzerland , Sweden and Finland have all been neutral for decades but they have always had a real defence capability. Their guns have always pointed east. Ireland is positively gushing about the EU project. Totally aligned. But Ireland has never had any meaningful defence capability. No need? NATO will come to our aid. Austria is neutral as a result of agreement for the withdrawal of Soviet troops in the nineteen fifties. That is different. But even that has now run its course. That guy ,in the video supporting neutrality like it is a religious cult , basically is saying invasion of a non threatening state by an authoritarian predator is none of Ireland’s business……militarily. He is saying in effect, “We support you but we are not going to help.” This is truly pathetic.
But like me and the majority of the Irish people believe we have no reason to get involved in the affairs of mainland Europe. Ireland has been the historically punching bag for Britain with constant invasions and genocides and now that we have true freedom for the first time in hundreds of years we should focus on our country and no other. And why I do think we should invest more in our navel sector of the military it should be only to protect Irish waters
Those North Atlantic cables that run through the sea's off of the west coast of Ireland are strategically important to the British Americans and the French. There all going to move to secure them to ensure no potential Russian sabotage.

Now the Irish political class can’t do enough to try to impress their overlords and enhance their own personal wealth.
