Good advice clearly explained. The Vaseline/Silicon grease tip was a real gem. Some people lather the joints in mastic or silicon sealant, but that will usually leak after a few weeks. Replacement rubber seals are the best option.
Just done mine before seeing this video Some good advice. The new joint was £3.99 which is excellent value for money. Attaching the rear part of the bracket was the hardest part. I put it in sideways then turn it around which helped . I also put in a little sealant membrane on the joint inside as I noticed the gutter had warped a little and wasn’t very flush . Everything become easy …. Once you have had the experience
However, I wouldn't recommend getting out the silicone grease when using a condom either, you might get a negative reaction in more ways than one! Other lubricants are available for that 'job'. 😉
Thanks for your comment. Have you checked to see if there are any manufacturers details printed on it? I managed to get some unusual fittings via a google search but ended paying a lot more than standard guttering. Have you tried just replacing the seals if that's an option?
@@FixitwithFowler thanks. Yes I've modified lower guttering, so I can reuse the original part for the top guttering that's broke. It's all terrain stuff I believe. It's those little clips that clamp the fittings together. Unusual design but they lasted a long long time. Yeah I can see if I can't replace those seals. 🙏👋🤞
Hi Steve, I'm having a spot of bother with water flowing on my guttering. I have a return around the side of the guttering similar to yours. At 1min 10 on your video, its a great shot as it looks the same as mine. However, I thought this may have been an incorrect fitting, as I can't see how the water would drop onto the corner bracket and then get over the lip of the next piece of guttering. (I have absolutely no idea about guttering, so was just assuming this could be the problem - looking at your set up, it might not be, it might just be due to the lack of fall on the guttering). I would have thought some fancy bit of mitring was required, so the two pieces butted up against each other in the right angle bracket ?. If not, I think I need to have a look at the fall on the brackets. Thanks Barry
Hi Barry, the guttering does not mitre in the corner. Instead, the guttering is cut square and stops in the corner joint at the stop line in the gutter joint. The water does sit a little in the joint but only about 2-3 mm, so long as the seals are ok, then this is not a problem. You could check that you have a fall on the guttering as this will help the water to drain away!
Really helpful. Thank you. Succinct and clearly explained and a lot more useful information than the other couple of videos I watched - despite being shorter. Excellent stuff. Liked and subscribed. FYI - I did a google search for ‘how to fix a leaking gutter’ and your video was the number two recommendation. It also appeared in my suggested video list. 👍👏
The video was going so well until it missed out the vital part of getting the clips on the back side . Clearly a problematic area which probably entailed several attempts and copious amounts of strong language! I only comment as mine has exactly this problem (dripping rather than running though) and I can foresee the clips snapping at some point as they are currently refusing to budge when trying to remove them! 😂
If you look at about 5.40, it shows how to install the clips. However, they are a nightmare, and if the weather is cold, the guttering clips and guttering are less flexible and the guttering clips can break!
There is another material that can be used for guttering, a material thats use in most if not all other countries in the world which works well. It's called metal! Just a thought.😂😂
Excellent How-To....clear, precise, short.....all you need to know!
I'm glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for your great comment 👍

Thanks for your comment, I agree that if you can get the rubber seals, that's definitely the best option
What another fabulous simple, and efficient piece of commentary. And jargon free. Well done Steve. Thank you.

Have you any links to cutting a 3x 2 flag down a few inches with an angle grinder ?
I certainly have, I did a video on this a while ago! ruclips.net/video/K-siNVymo7Q/видео.htmlsi=nodGtggVDDBPYVn4
Followed your tips inc the Vaseline and all went to plan, the end result was leak free👍
Brilliant, thanks for your comment!
It is without doubt easier to work on guttering in warm weather! Those clips can be very difficult to work on otherwise.
Yes, they are a pain. However, someone suggested putting the in hot water for a few minutes before using them!
Had this exact problem today! Thanks for making this video.
No problem, I'm glad you liked the video 😊
Thank you for very helpful video. I feel confident to tackle this myself now. 👍🏻
That's brilliant, thanks for your comment 👍
Don't use vaseline or any petroleum product as a lubricant with rubber - it will gradually eat away at the rubber. Use silicone grease instead.
Anyone who's read the instructions for using a condom would know that. 😆
However, I wouldn't recommend getting out the silicone grease when using a condom either, you might get a negative reaction in more ways than one! Other lubricants are available for that 'job'. 😉

What about washing up liquid?
That would work
I was about to buy some sealant to cure a leaky gutter. After watching this video I realised that replacing seals or joints is the way to go! Thanks!
Hi, no problem! I'm glad the video has helped you out. Thanks for your comment 👍
Nice and easy
Cheers
I had no idea Mats Sundin was such a handyman!
Lol, brilliant comment!!!

I've been tinkering with gutters. I've the old 100mm or 4 inch still. Impossible to get replacements I feel.

At least they are easy to replace and cheap! Thanks for your comment 👍
Good advice steve keep up the good work xx
Thanks!!!
Very well explained
Hi, thanks for your comment!
Excellent!.
Thank you! Cheers!
You Dont fit the gutter up to the stops, there is a line, about 1/4" short of the stops that you should be guided by...
It's only a short run, so it won't move too much.
Thanks 👍

Hi.
Can I only exchange guttery clips. My is broken and I want to fix it on my own.Can I do that?Thank you for any help.
Yes of course you can

Hi, thanks so much for your great comment, and I'm glad the video has helped you out!
Hello, Is it possible to fix the leak of down spout connect to the gutter drain. The leak is at the top of the spout connecting to the gutter drain.
Hi, normally these joints just push together and habe no seals or mechanical fixings!
Most likely the down pipe is blocked
Not sure about using petroleum jelly as this attacks rubber
Price of guttering now looking at that would have replaced the lot not just the joint
It was only £3 for the corner peice! Nit worth replacing the rest as it just needs cleaning!
what about the down pipe conection
They just push together so are easy to remove and replace
@@FixitwithFowler yes but it a drip issue>>>???
Why no audio
There is, have you got it on mute?
The reason why we get so much trouble with plastic gutters. Is because they are poorly made and the rubber gaskets are also very poor.
Yes I agree, thanks for your comment 👍

That's a great idea, and yes, you're right about some strong language and breaking the clips. Good job, they are cheap!

You can get metal in the UK normally formed on site in complete lengths. However, due to cost, most houses have this plastic guttering!
The quality in Europe is so much better than American crap we use
Hi, im in the UK. These are standard guttering parts and really cheap. What do you use in America 🇺🇸?
@@FixitwithFowler I was mainly focused on the building and roof in general. I have aluminum gutters on my house
Oh, right, yes, most of the houses are either rick or concrete blocks in construction. My house was built in the 1960s, and it's nearly all original.
Don’t use crap plastic guttering.
What cheap alternative is there in the UK?
Argh, wash the gutter!
Maybe another time!
