I am from this place but I left in 1989 and never returned except on a couple of visits. The village itself is just one big hotel now and many mountain tops have had their trees removed for more and more winter skiing pistes. Not sure what the future will hold for this place. If you want real Austrian flare you probably better off on the immediate border region on the Italian side, about 7 hours foot march from Mayrhofen, there are still places with hardly any tourism, the area around Sterzing.
