It is impressive the design identifies and solves some of the problems which is prevalent with a vertical hydroponic build. The chief of which is equal distribution of the nutrients to each of the plant holders. I have a simple 4 tower square design which was a common design offered by several on the Internet. I found the pump to be inadequate requiring absolute leveling to get the nutrient flow evenly divided. Thank you very much for your observations and thought but more than that, your willingness and expertise to share this with others. This makes you a great person, one who believes not in held information but rather shared information to benefit us all. In this very divided world we live in, this speaks volumes about your character. I truly appreciate it.
What an excellent resource. I searched everywhere to find out how the water was effectively distributed through the pipes, that disc is genius. Thanks for the thorough walk through. I really appreciate it!
You were my inspiration when living aboard a boat, traveling to the Bahamas, and wanting fresh greens the whole time. Mine was much smaller, but it worked beautifully! Thank you AH!!
Could you share the reasoning behind discontinuing the use of this system?
When you use a hidroponic system without substrate it's important not to have power outages and leave plants without water for a long time that's sounds like what may have happened
You have been a pioneer, you have inspired more than 1,000,000 people, thank you, we pray for you. My question: could you tell us more about the scientific name of the 3 main components of the formulation for salads? (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) to buy them on the internet and mix itself at home.
we will make a video soon on nutrients in detail
Hi, thanks for the informative video. What other better system did you find for which you discard the vertical system?
Please do let me know.
I am watching several videos each one giving me an additional idea..This Corona virus has taught me one thing....self sufficiency is important.
You guys are an absolute inspiration. I've loved following your evolutionary journey from vertical farming (and the unreliable national grid dilemma) to RDWC.
And what a lovely surprise to find out you're in South Africa ♥
thanks for sharing the details of construction :)
It's very informative and inspirative, thank you
Great video and many thanks but....how did the water come back in your tank when your return pipes are so low?
this is one of the most under-rated video.
this is really really impressive
Easiest setup I've seen.

Thanks so much for this video! So much has been demystified now and might move forward with our home system.
Also have a look at our comparison between each system ruclips.net/video/ZlM9Yzdwr4U/видео.html
and which is the better of them, but that also will vary depending on circumstance.
can you do a video wit the pump system please
1) Why was it discontinued?
2) Why must the fittings on the pipe be in a spiral shape? For space to grow?
3) Thank you for the detailed video
Amazing!!!! Awesome job!!! Inspiring!!!😍😍😍
Thanks for the content, really educative!
Why did he discontinue the vertical system? I really liked the idea of rotating the pipes I thinking to start small and build my way up. I have a tendency/history to fail and waste money on my ideas so I starting slowly to learn the basics.
Aloha guys, can you please share a video on the piping/plumbing of your RDWC? Thank you.
Thank you to sharing your knowledge, but you didn't finish it. The installation of a pamp and water system connected through the PVC. I hope you will show us how to connect all together. Thanks
How have you loaded the germinated plants into the net cups
you can buy a longer net pot so it will reach, at least, the middle of the main pipe. I bought a transparent pot and find it much better with this black pot. just a suggestion.. ;-)
Awesome idea. Go for it.
Hello sir, thanks for sharing this wonderful video. i would like to know about number of plants that can fit there. Do you mean you can plant 1215 plants in that net pot (1215 numbers of net pot) Thanks in advance
what were the supplements for plant nutrition.
Even sunlight?
Why have you discontinued the vertical grow system?
It is very easy to see where the tube goes into the tower, but where and how it joins the main supply line is harder to see. Where the small water tube goes onto your main supply line is there some type of fitting? Or is it glued? or just a tight fix. If you are using a fitting what did you use to tap the holes?
Why did you stop the vertical farming? is there a much more efficient? Based in your experience what are the pro's and con's of vertical farming?
Was there anything you'd do differently? Any pains you may have encountered? Did it live up to your expectations? And, why did you decide to decommission it?
Could you foresee any problem using a double-wye pipe fitting instead to increase yield while still having alternating pattern of direction?
yes in a case like ours where the trees are very close to each other you will get shading of the lower plants especially when they get big and by using double wye fitting it will get worse, so I would recommend leaving adequate space for light if you intend using double wye fittings.
what were the supplements for plant nutrition? and did you use an especific type of soil?
Why discontinued ?
we have done a video on the pros and cons of the vertical system and others
interesting points ,if anyone else needs to find out about diy aquaponics system plans try Tarbetti Amazing Aquaponics Tutor (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my partner got amazing success with it.
Mathos DFMC yes why?
hello, I live in Brazil and I'm interested in this system and I have a doubt what is the time for the irrigation timer, how many minutes it stays on wstering and how long it stays off, thanks for your attention! :)
Why did you discontinue using the system? Too much shade and not enough sunlight? Low production?
Apparently they're based in South Africa, which sadly suffers major power outages on a daily basis. Without electricity the water pumps won't work, and so the plants were probably dying under the intense African sun.
Well done AH Hydroponics for overcoming the national grid issue with your latest RDWC design , your ingenuity is inspirational.
Goodjob
at 653 now i understand why this system was discontinued, it barely touches the net pots, as such the lettuce or plant will be deprived. In the philippines we just use a heat gun to soften the pipe, then insert a bottle with a bottle with the same size dimension as the net pot to be used, just a suggestion.
buenas noches muy bueno el sistema quisiera saber como es el sistema de fluido del agua
Excelente puedes pasar la distancia entre torre y torre y el diámetro del PVC pfv
This looks like a great system, do you have any trouble with plants being to close together and with the tee wye are you using 15 per tree. Great Job
yes we did experience a problem when they got big that they were shading each other but you can always increase the space between them
yes 15
You mentioned you discontinued grow trees ? why ?
How did you make the plastic blue plate? Where did you get the plate from or that plastic sheet from? What tool did you use to cut the notches around the circumference?
Tbm queira saber.
There are divergent views on the food safety aspect of PVC. Did you use any special kind of food-safe PVC pipe and if so, is it easily available and how should we ask for it at the store?
the water you drink from the tap comes from miles of pvc pipe. MILES of it. but it is nsf-51 pipe to be clear. and quote.. "Thanks to the aforementioned NSF-51 standards along with FDA approval, it is safe to conclude that PVC is food graded." not that the fda is always right.. so yes. pvc pipe you get from the store will be almost always foodgrade safe.
@@krazyklown8160 The reason the miles & miles of PVC coming into our homes with our tap is safe is because it runs UNDERGROUND. The moment you let direct Sun hit PVC is when the leaching begins. Think of Bruce Banner vs. The Incredible Hulk. Same person, same PVC . But the moment you expose it to what will degrade it (Sun/UV rays cuz it was not designed for that tolerance) it starts to fall apart chemically. I live on a farm & we have used PVC for 3 generations now. They degrade & crack if you leave them outside. But well before you visually see the cracks, chemistry within has degraded. No one wants THOSE chemicals in them!
As much as this system is indeed beautiful the problem i had with this system is sunlight exposure to the lower plant..to maximize sunlight exposure of each plant i must space each tower further apart which is against the principle of saving space..thus i switch to nft system
Sir...if ever we wamt to install this ...can we get any dealer...who ll do a to z installation procedure... with technical guidance
Hi can i have more information about the water pump sequence please
It run all of the day ?
thank you so much
On our system it did not run continuously rather at hourly intervals for 5 minutes, But you can adjust it to your preference
Very good video... Do we need to use fully automatic polyhouse for hydroponics? Or shall I use naturally ventilated polyhouse?
It depends on your climate , but if you experience moderate weather you do not need an automatic poly-house
thank you
Why was it discontinued? Was it not producing the desired output or was there something else wrong. The reason why I ask is that I was thinking of moving back home & doing something similar to your setup in Somalia, where lettuce is in demand but the crop is difficult to grow because of the high temperatures in some seasons and lack of water for most of the year.
PS Thanks for putting up this video and all your other videos.
May I ask why you stopped using this system?
Great video. Why did you stop using the vertical system?
We were experiencing power outages which began to interfere with the plant growth and caused some plants to stunt so we moved to RDWC
Amazing! With LED you would have gone twice as fast
How is that ? Did u try it ?
I love the idea of a plastic disc to distribute water! I have a vertical aquaponic system that uses expanded clay as the growing media, and it isn't working very well. What type of substrate do you use?
we used to use coco peat but we have changed to rock wool as the water stays more clean than with peat
@@AHhydrogrow with the rockwool did you not had problem with Algae?
How long is the day when the water pump to grow the verticals runs the pipes
The pump runs on hourly intervals 5 to 10 minutes in an hour.
@@AHhydrogrow thank you very much, my brother
Where are you guys based?
Wow I love t
Hello
Thanks for the video
Is it suitable for all kind of veggies?
Not all veggies, basically fibrous root vegetables that do not grow too heavy or big
Leafy type vegetables
Why you discontinued is it beneficial? Did you suffer loss
Can you tell us what you used as the substrate? The "media" in which you put the lettuce seeds? Would coco fiber work?
Also I was thinking, the problem which you mentioned in 6:55 would a longer netpot work?
Thank you for the video, very informative.
we originally used coco fiber then moved to rock wool both are fine but rock wool does not dirty the water as much
yes a longer net pot would work
Hi,
Thanks for the video. I have a question! Which is the frequency that the timer puts the pump in operation?
Thanks in advance for your help.
I think they included that in the old video.
@@FooxYT pretty sure that info is in the old video, but to be honest any hydroponics forum or website should help you get a general ballpark and you can fine tune it based on how well your plants are growing.
depending on the weather conditions etc ,but in normal circumstances its good to run the pumps at every hour for a few minutes ,In extreme heat you may want to shorten the intervals so the roots do not dry up.
@@AHhydrogrow awesome, thanks for the info.
What are the dimension of the wye fittings?
Hey, what type of soil are you using?
Oh, and how did you hook up everything to make it do automatic watering and such?
we had a sump tank and a pump which pumped water up to overhead distribution pipes then to feeders on every tree, the water drained back to the tank and is circulated on an hourly bases by means of a timer switch which comes on for 5 to 10 mins every hour.
do you use any artificial lighting?
Where did you get the inlet pipes from
The inlet pipes are standard 25mm pvc pipes but we have drilled holes in them to allow much thinner flex pipes to fit exactly in with no leaks which then feed the water to the grow trees below.
Do you put the pump on a timer or does it run 24/7? Thank you.
It runs on a timer
Wow! thanks for this! :)
I dont see how the water gets from the reservoir to the actual plants? You mention there was a top rail but thats the most important piece to explain as the system is useless without how the water gets from the tank to the actual plants. otherwise a great video. It could be an amazing video if it was complete.
A pump moves the water there, just put some kind of fitting on top.
the pump need to be running 24/7 or there is a particular time period to run the pumps?
On our system it did not run continuously rather at hourly intervals for 5 minutes, But you can adjust it to your preference.
@@AHhydrogrow how do you set intervals for a pump?
@@slumberless7605 Tey must have used an electronic timer, like a water heater
timer
With 50mm did you have any water blockage from the roots?
No we did not
Net pot size?
What do you add to the water
Basic hydroponic nutrients for lettuce, which you can pick up from a hydroponic store.
Hi what pump did you use for that height ?
We used a 0.37kw pedrollo pump with a flow rate of approximately 40lmin
Does water drives 0-24?
If I understood correctly , No the pumps do not run all day they are on timers
Did they take up all the space when they were fully grown, or is there still empty space on the tree?
We left enough space only for the fully grown lettuce, so there was very little to no space left when it was fully grown.
What did it cost to build?
Costing is something you will have to do based on your location (as the price of items and materials differ depending on location.
Used 4" X 2" Double Wye pvc Fitting that will be 30 per vertical
Yes that can work, but your spacing between the trees would have to increase and also you would not have a spiral formation without blocking light coming from directly above (in the case of grow lights), update us in the future on your system. Thanks.
@@AHhydrogrow Double why can be stacked at 90 degrees to provide the same spiral effect your system had. or you can spin it 60 degrees each level, so it would provide much better ventilation, lighting and space for growth
Bakthavathsal Kadambi thanks for this
Thanks a lot for this vids. So you get a density of 81 plants / m2 , and for your DWC it's 25, so why did you stop this technique ?
We were experiencing power outages which began to interfere with the plant growth and caused some plants to stunt so we moved to RDWC
@@AHhydrogrow thanks a lot. So if you don't get power outage is that a better system than RDWC ? And how long a power outage can cause health problem to plants ? Thanks a lot :)
In terms of space the vertical system is obviously better but we found better growth (head size) in the RDWC system, On a very hot day we found that the roots can dry up if not watered ,so you can possibly pull through a power outage in normal circumstances (in our case 2 hours a day ) but we felt it was better if the roots were submerged , Exactly how long causes health problems to plants would vary on circumstances , thanks.
@@AHhydrogrow thanks a lot. Did you figure out why dwc is better in terms of yield ?
how can to get the materials you use for this

will be dificult to clean algae inside pipe.
Not really since they can be removed for cleaning and not much algae builds up inside because there is no light.
they are NOT Wye Tee fitting. They are just Wye fittings. A straight connector??? Its called a coupling...
Overthingking.. Just put piece of clothes at the bottom of netpot. Water will watering the small plant by capilarity.
He doesn't tell us why it was discontinued. Doesn't show how the water will actually get to the top and flow to the different poles. Doesn't show how the water flows back at the bottom and not just sit there. Really doesn't show anything that we actually need to know
Too many fitting, nightmare to clean, and the cost. Much simpler systems in existence. Always apply the KISS principle.
this is a very expensive system to make....
no good expensive way.
Music sucks ...could have narrated it instead..
Seems to be an expensive setup
But you get a lot for the amount of money you put into it. My wife and I are working on a similar system as well.
