    Not all those who wander are lost;
    The old that is strong does not wither,

    When you think of it, Arwen in a way basically saved Middle-Earth.
    It was her decision to forsake her immortality and the trip to the Undying Lands out of her love for Aragorn that convinced Elrond to give the race of Men a second chance, thus reforging Narsil into Anduril.
    Without Anduril, Aragorn would not have gotten the support of the Army of the Dead. Without the Army of the Dead, Minas Tirith would have fallen. And had Minas Tirith fallen, Aragorn would not have been able to unite the Gondorian and Rohirrim armies into assaulting the Black Gate to lure out Sauron’s army and give Frodo and Sam an opening to drop the Ring into Mount Doom.
    So yeah, give some credit to Arwen.

      in the books Aragorn has Anduril the entire journey with the fellowship.

      You aren't wrong, but these scenes are the complete opposite of what happened in the books. In the books Elrond needed no convincing and was on board from the start of the problem. He also had Narsil reforged before the fellowship left Rivendell because he knew Aragorn would need it.

      The filmmakers were very committed to making every major scene conform to an epic, or even spiritual scale. Rare in modern films. Kind of like when Dorothy steps out of her brown & white cabin, into the color world of Oz. Compared to our color world, what higher reality would we see upon stepping into heaven?

I think weta workshop is behind most of the design of weapons and armor in these movies. 1:57 thats cameo Richard Taylor, the genius behind weta who is playing the blacksmith reforging Anduril. This is for sure the saddest scene in the trilogy for me, and for those who read the books it hits even harder.
    Basically, when humans dies, they go outside the "Circles of the World" to a fate known only to Iluvatar, God, while the elves go to Valinor in the Halls of Mandos (one of the Valar), and can resurect after some time depending on how they lived. Or just take a ship to Valinor if they did not die in Middle-Earth. And they stay on Arda (the world) until the end of times. So when Arwen chose to become a mortal, Elrond knew that after he leaves Middle-Earth, he would be separated from her forever, and forever here isnt just a figure of speech but literally until the end of times since he will live eternally in Valinor and she will exit the World as all humans do.

      It was forged by Telchar of Nogrod, one of the greatest Dwarven smiths of the First Age, together with a paired knife, Angrist, the very knife used by Beren to carve one of the three Silmarils out of the Iron Crown of Morgoth.
      From there the history is unwritten, but Narsil was (presumably) taken to Númenor, before it passed down the line ending in, of course, Elendil and Isildur, its shards kept in Rivendell, and then reforged into Andúril.

    Another instance where Peter Jackson diverges from Tolkien. In the books, if memory serves, when Aragorn leaves Rivendell with the fellowship he's already carrying the reforged sword. Aragorn had already made up his mind to reclaim the throne when the time was right. But I get why Jackson changed it. He's a filmmaker and wanted the scene for greater dramatic impact visually, while Tolkien was writing an epic trilogy.

      I'll be entire honest: This is one of the points where it is an improvement over the books. In the books, Aragorn has a certain level of arrogance and haughtiness to him due to his desire to become King. In the movies that is lacking, making Aragorn a far more down-to-earth character, and giving him a character arc that provides the lesson of 'Sometimes you cannot become what you dream to be, but have to become what you are destined to be. There is no fault in that.'

    • @_Peremalfait

      Without Anduril, Aragorn would not have gotten the support of the Army of the Dead. Without the Army of the Dead, Minas Tirith would have fallen. And had Minas Tirith fallen, Aragorn would not have been able to unite the Gondorian and Rohirrim armies into assaulting the Black Gate to lure out Sauron’s army and give Frodo and Sam an opening to drop the Ring into Mount Doom.
