Kind of like when Dorothy steps out of her brown & white cabin, into the color world of Oz. Compared to our color world, what higher reality would we see upon stepping into heaven?
This is for sure the saddest scene in the trilogy for me, and for those who read the books it hits even harder. Basically, when humans dies, they go outside the "Circles of the World" to a fate known only to Iluvatar, God, while the elves go to Valinor in the Halls of Mandos (one of the Valar), and can resurect after some time depending on how they lived. Or just take a ship to Valinor if they did not die in Middle-Earth. And they stay on Arda (the world) until the end of times. So when Arwen chose to become a mortal, Elrond knew that after he leaves Middle-Earth, he would be separated from her forever, and forever here isnt just a figure of speech but literally until the end of times since he will live eternally in Valinor and she will exit the World as all humans do.
It's even sadder since Elrond has already lost so many people important to him, and that when he goes to Valinor he's going to have to tell his wife, who will be hoping to see her daughter again after thousands of years, about Arwen's choice.
When you think of it, Arwen in a way basically saved Middle-Earth. It was her decision to forsake her immortality and the trip to the Undying Lands out of her love for Aragorn that convinced Elrond to give the race of Men a second chance, thus reforging Narsil into Anduril. Without Anduril, Aragorn would not have gotten the support of the Army of the Dead. Without the Army of the Dead, Minas Tirith would have fallen. And had Minas Tirith fallen, Aragorn would not have been able to unite the Gondorian and Rohirrim armies into assaulting the Black Gate to lure out Sauron’s army and give Frodo and Sam an opening to drop the Ring into Mount Doom. So yeah, give some credit to Arwen.
in the books Aragorn has Anduril the entire journey with the fellowship. He originally intended to go straight to Gondor with Boromir but when Gandalf fell in Moria he had to become the leader of the fellowship.
You aren't wrong, but these scenes are the complete opposite of what happened in the books. In the books Elrond needed no convincing and was on board from the start of the problem. He also had Narsil reforged before the fellowship left Rivendell because he knew Aragorn would need it.

The build-up to this scene is so incredible. Arwen seeing her son in her Forest vision, confronting Elrond, her father realizing the life the Eldar is no longer with her.... And then the verse of the broken blade..... To the epic scene of the forge and the climactic song building, the transition of the flame to Gandalf riding. What a movie... Thank GOD for these movies.
That shot of the book falling - a magnificant bit of visual storytelling. I hate to bring it up but saying I'm afraid RINGS OF POWER won't be able to match this level of filmmaking would be an understatement.
Except Arwen randomly picking up a book and then immediately dropping it dramatically is objectively a bit silly, especially when they can't hold continuity between shots (the book changes pages).
Whether or not Aragorn would follow his true calling, Arwen took that decision upon herself to make his destiny a reality. That's why this scene is so compelling to me and has aged so well after nearly 20 years

@@catherinebracy4332 Probably some kind of science/engineering. Design a ballista that can impale 10 orcs with one bolt, loading time must be less than 10 seconds when operated by 2 men.
Another instance where Peter Jackson diverges from Tolkien. In the books, if memory serves, when Aragorn leaves Rivendell with the fellowship he's already carrying the reforged sword. Aragorn had already made up his mind to reclaim the throne when the time was right. But I get why Jackson changed it. He's a filmmaker and wanted the scene for greater dramatic impact visually, while Tolkien was writing an epic trilogy.
Not having the sword and not feeling prepared for kingship gives Aragorn an arc in the films that he doesn't have in the books. In the books it's (to paraphrase an old forum post I read years ago) "Still not king. Still not king. Still not king. Finally I'm king". This has much more dramatic weight. We see him earn his kingship.
I'll be entire honest: This is one of the points where it is an improvement over the books. In the books, Aragorn has a certain level of arrogance and haughtiness to him due to his desire to become King. In the movies that is lacking, making Aragorn a far more down-to-earth character, and giving him a character arc that provides the lesson of 'Sometimes you cannot become what you dream to be, but have to become what you are destined to be. There is no fault in that.'
@@MrBlueBurd0451 I'm not really faulting Jackson. He's a filmmaker and in movies time is precious. He didn't have the space of three epic novels, but rather had to pack a lot of story into a limited time frame. I understand why he made the changes he did.

I love Arwen’s expanded role in the movies. I think had Tolkien been told and explained why the writers did what they did and how society and cultures developed in the 20th century, he would have given it all his blessing.
I love it too, it's great, and in a way that does not destroys the fundamentals of the story. Also since Tolkien world is a legendarium there is flexibility build int.

It's the true love and sacrifice of Arwen, giving up her immortal Eldar spirit to choose human life for Aragorn, that pushes Elrond to go all in out of love for his daughter.
From what I've heard, book Aragon had already gone through the journey of acceptance that film Aragon underwent throughout the trilogy, and book Aragon sought to win the favour of Elrond by reclaiming the throne of Gondor to marry Arwen. At least that's the impression I get.
Another commentor already said this. "When you think of it, Arwen in a way basically saved Middle-Earth. I also don't think legalos left either, I think he stayed around for awhile to, I also looked up Aragorn and Arwen and it says that Aragorn and Arwen ruled the reunified kingdom for till Aragorn said that he was done living and died 245 years later and then Arwen went to rivendell and died a year later
Legolas and Gimli eventually went to Valinor, but many years after Aragorn died. Apparently Gimli was the only dwarf to ever go to Valinor.
@@Theri4444 Both Legolas and Gimli left Middle-Earth for Valinor. Which is odd, I still don't know how a dwarf entered the undying lands.
Best trilogy that ever was, or will be
Better than Pirates of the Caribbean, Better than Star Trek, better than Game of Thrones, better than Harry Potter, better than the Marvel Cinematic Universe (which I’m in the process of watching), even better than Star Wars. Fight me.
@@davidmcaninch4714 a lot of people will agreed with you

That reforging scene is so EPIC! GOOSEBUMPS!!!
I need more Middle Earth movies in my life!!
@@NRGgamer YES I AM SO SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS! Second Age! THIS WILL BE ABSOLUTELY EPIC! So hyped!!
But only by Peter Jackson
The hobbit trilogy was lazy. The orcs looked ridiculous
Wait a minute…is she the daughter of the Red Skull?
18 years and that shot at 1:50 still makes me smile like an idiot
the music, the dialogue, the cinematography. amazing!
I love what Peter Jackson did for Aragorn, giving him an internal conflict of taking his rightful place as king.
That's why this scene is so compelling to me and has aged so well after nearly 20 years
Can you imagine anyone else playing Elrond better than Hugo Weaving?
I can't.
Hugh Grant. Burt Reynolds. Jerry Seinfeld.
@@NotQuiteFirst Fuck no.
Nicholas Cage ahahaha
Aerosmith could fit well i guess.
Well....there's new Elrond in Ring of Power....he's suck s LoL
The most beautiful trilogy ever made.
1:30 Narsil is reborn the great sword returns to the flames from which it was made. Sauron won't forget Narsil it defeated him once and it will do it again once it returns to the hands of the king.
and now it is Anduril Flame of the West
these films that were the brightest of their time only get brighter as the years go by 💓
That Minas Tirith theme kicking in... epic
My heart breaks at exactly 1:21
No it didnt….otherwise you would have died and unable to write this comment
The music as Elrond retrieves the book is heartbreaking.
Can someone tell me what it’s called. Been searching for it for days now
I've combed through the OST and I'm pretty sure it is called The Grace of Undomiel :) from the Return of the King OST
Love hows sword howled when they lifted him out like some Elvish enchantment, remember this in cinema boy was too epic...chilled
The music when the sword is reforged is the most goosebump inducing moment. I will never tire of these movies.
THERE IS NO SHIP NOW THAT CAN BEAR ME HENCE
When I was young and only owned the VHS version of lord of the rings, I used to think after the preceding scene featuring Arwen, that it was Arwen who tied her hair into a bun, puts a sporty outfit and is the lass reforging Anduril at the smithy with Elrond holding the blade and helping her hammer onto it. Then I got the blu ray and realized it was two random male elves.
I thought the same!! Also saw it on VHS!
I love elven craftmanship it's the perfect balance of strength and elegances
One of the greatest sequences from L.O.T.R, Elrond and Arwen, re forging the sword that cut the ring from Souron's finger
He really loved his daughter. What a guy! It was a hard choice to make!
I remember back in my college, my professor's assitant made exam questions by using LOTR story....and that's the first time in my life i face exam with happy face. Hahhah...
Really? What kind of subject was it on, English?
@@catherinebracy4332 Probably some kind of science/engineering. Design a ballista that can impale 10 orcs with one bolt, loading time must be less than 10 seconds when operated by 2 men.
1:20 the feeling only a parent who is losing a child can feel
I remember this scene in the cinema, so powerful it was.
If they followed the books exactly the movies each would have had to be 10 hours long.
@@shaneross3319 i'd love to see 10 hours long jackson's fellowship of the rings

The books are perfect as they are. Don't need modern meddling.

Those two elven blacksmiths are true heroes.
Apparently they're two guys from Weta Workshop.
It's the true love and sacrifice of Arwen, giving up her immortal Eldar spirit to choose human life for Aragorn, that pushes Elrond to go all in out of love for his daughter.
the way she transformed when she gave up her immortal life... 3 minute scene that can destroy ur soul :(
SMITHING INCREASED TO 100
200 because its Anduril flame of the west
It was odd to me when I found out that in the books, Aragon already had the Anduril after he left Rivendell.
From what I've heard, book Aragon had already gone through the journey of acceptance that film Aragon underwent throughout the trilogy, and book Aragon sought to win the favour of Elrond by reclaiming the throne of Gondor to marry Arwen.
At least that's the impression I get.
Give Arwen credit. She forced her father to have Narsil reforged and sent to Aragorn. She allowed Middle-Earth to be saved.
Another commentor already said this.
"When you think of it, Arwen in a way basically saved Middle-Earth.
*So yeah, give some credit to Arwen."*
So inspiring... What love can do
Arwen loves Aragorn and Elrond loves arwen... If there was no love thé World would be lost
Does anyone else think that the the best part of the soundtrack is the elven song and not the forging part
The best part is the two going together.

Nah. When the music kicks in to reforge the sword gave me chills

"Arwen, are you hiding in the dark making faux-protentous statements?"
"...no"
"Arwen!"
Really find it unique to see the elven smiths. All the time they’re either soldiers in elegant armour or in fancy dress. Then these two guys are just all rugged forging a sword. Sickz
Fun fact: Narsil now Anduril is a Dwarven sword, not Elvish. They reforged all the original pieces and engraved the blade, therefore it is still a Dwarven blade.

Truly a beautiful scene, one of my favourites, and with a beautifully sad song to accompany it.
i can't imagine how Elrond will react if aragorn betrays her... :(
My god this sequence is good. This one and Galadriel talking to Elrond in the two towers are my favorite parts of the movies (besides the obvious ones)
He lost his brother and daughter. Thats sad.
The music in the background accompanies the scene brilliantly evoking emotion as the characters dialogue
Elrond's twin brother Elros chose the mortal life - he was Aragon's ancestor. Elrond and Celebrian had twins sons as well as Arwen - it isn't known what choice the twins made.
The two elves that repairing Narsi, sword of Elida, are Elrond's sons, Arwen's brothers, Elladan and Elrohir.
I always find it funny how Arwen makes this passionate dramatic speech about reforging the sword and Elrond just walks away.
Reminds me of when I was a kid trying to convince my dad to buy something and he’d just be like “no”.
''Reforge he sword''
''Sorry, my smithing lvl isn't high enough''
A new blade what once was broken shall be reforged. For the one true king of Gondor. That poem Arwen recites isn't some ancient prophecy, it was written by Bilbo Baggins.
Yup
If you look at the book she dropped you'll notice only the middle two pages are printed. The rest of the book is blank pages.
Who cares? And that's not even true since the page you can see at 0:43 is different from 0:45 even though they are on the same side of the book XD They couldn't have a book full of blank pages since you don't really know which pages would show up in the scene
Imagine the elvensmiths when Elrond was like we are going to reforge the most famous sword in the whole of middle earth 😁😅
And it was originally made by a dwarf, so they probably thought: "We're going to make it better"
