- After 45 years of the Golf, in comes the Mk8 GTI Clubsport. There’s no question that VW knows what it's doing with a hot hatch but there's a new kid on the scene - the Toyota GR Yaris. A homologation special, designed to make you feel like a rally driver on the road. It’s only fair that we let them fight it out on the Top Gear Test Track, with a little help from The Stig and Becky Evans. Which one will take the top spot on the Power Lap leader board, the more powerful FWD Golf or the 4WD Yaris?

@HFG hardly, lighter, shorter wheel base, awd. the Golfs a glorified grocery getter, the yaris is a track car.
Manual transmission let's you do that!

The Yaris launch point in the video has a "most replayed tag" lol.
An extra 400cc, one more cylinder, and a DSG box and still loses to a Yaris on a bone dry circuit. Just imagine how much the difference would be if the track was a bit damp and greasy. Quicker than the Civic Type R as well I reckon. Mega lap! The GTI looked very unsettled under braking and reluctant to turn in despite being the Clubsport edition.
Depends on the track, the Toyota is in the advantage here because of its weight. The Golf is 11 seconds faster on the Nürburgring for example.
Golf comes with Bridgestone s005, Yaris is on ps4s
@@GerbenBol Nurburgring has a lot of sections where you can be flat out in top gear. Top Gear track is more representative of real world conditions.

@@GerbenBol well I own a GR Yaris and coming from a modified Focus RS it is a quicker car in day to day usage. Believe the hype. The GR really is that good.

the Yaris is lighter and more nimble, despite lacking in gear shifting DSG whiz-bangery. 1280kg vs 1460kg, 1 less cylinder, slower top speed and 1sec quicker to 100km/h, which on this track, out-paced the kraut.
Bullshit. It's impossible for it to perform as fast. I can see that new top gear suck ass badly
actually 0-100km is at 5.5sek according to toyota.

Very evenly matched. The difference in times comes down to the launch really. The Yaris pulls a gap at the beginning and the golf closes it marginally

Seems like really generic content to me. Top Gear was Clarkson. There's zero humor or snark to this. I mean its fine, its not bad or anything. It just doesn't stand out in my mind from a bunch of other similar programs.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it didn't look like any of the TC and ESP controls were switched off on the Yaris, otherwise they would have been glowing bright orange on the dash. If right, that's going to severely dent the Yaris's times

I noticed a lot of hesitancy with the GTI in turns. Looked like the driver was fighting to stay in control. Not sure if that was understeer or just loss of grip.

I am glad i grewup with old topgear . There is offensive jokes, no making fun of people , nothing. Old topgear was all in one . The new topgear is like climbing down a mountain but the old topgear was like climbing down a mountain in a water slide .

I'm making an assumption that the power in the GR Yaris was quite low down in the rev range because I noticed the sitg short shifting quite a bit.
What's missing is the onboard commentary during the lap

Not sure why the FWD GTI Clubsport is being matched against the AWD Yaris. Seems a bit unfair. Perhaps the Golf R should have taken the place of the Clubsport....?
It is a more refined platform against a built economy car... ultimately their racing the clock but each other

And I do think that the Clubsport is faster than The Golf R around the circuit
Golf r more expensive and powerful. This comparison gets potential owners thinking about what they want from a hot hatch. Personally I would go for the more nimble fun one.
What makes you think even the golf r could take on the AWD might of Japan? The GR Yaris is unbeatable and will leave the germans in the evening dust caus JDM is the best! 🗾

So the GR Corolla will be similar to the GTI CS but better around corners with Awd
Yaris is so fast for only 258hp, mild mods and a tune and I reckon it would be miles faster than anything other than a tuned type r which is also a beast

At 1.26.8 Should be just above the Focus RS mk III (not below), but the Toyota GR was awesome to be honest :)

Also the GR Yaris is AWD. That stig was a bit crazy...
Even if the Yaris wasn't faster I still prefer it over the GTI why because (No offence to German engineering as they're great) but, I prefer Japanese cars. Cheaper, parts cheaper and easier to get, cheaper to maintain and overall much longer lasting. Plus it's manual and I prefer manual. Manual transmission trumps automatic transmission any day any time for me. I prefer to shift my own gears. Speed is irrelevant to me, manual is more run and exciting overall.
Let's be honest here fore a second. German engineering has lost its meaning a long time ago. Now a days German cars (especially Luxury branded ones) are known for being high maintenance, not super reliable and the build quality is not what they used to be.

@@pazera66 as you can see, in the hands of a Professional driver, the Yaris was actually faster than the clubsport gti (maybe you could do it better 😄?). For the average dude that want to have fun doing trackdays it’s just a matter of Taste and preferences, if that’s the Golf for you, that’s absolutely fine.

Seems that no one mentions that would be all wheel drive vs front wheel drive. Think about that for a sec. Shows just how good that Honda really is.

The Toyota's launch looked so much more rapid, I'm not at all surprised by the results.
we can't forget that the Golf has a DSG and the Yaris is a manual, that should make more of a difference than the start as DSG's are always faster on track than a manual.

Could you tell us the difference between the host's time and the Stig's? I'm curious how much difference a pro driver makes.
A previous Stig was faster than most F1 drivers in the Top Gear "reasonably priced car", they were about 3secs faster than the fastest celeb and 20secs ish faster than the slowest celebs.
Barichello had some T shirts printed with "I beat The Stig" for himself and some others printed "I didn't beat The Stig" which he distributed to rival F1 drivers :-)

the golf has DSG and more power and is intended as a track car, it should have been better even though the worse start, but then start is also part of a race.
Great video! Would have been good to see you whack the yaris into sport mode though and play around with the rear wheel bias.

Yaris is 4wd and the club sport is front. So it makes sense
the club has a DSG and the Yaris is manual, DSG is always a lot faster on track than manual and the club has 40 more hp.

Smaller tracks like this would better suit the yaris. I feel like the clubsport is much faster around the nordschleife.

...and this GR has rally engine under the hood. You can easily tune it to 400hp without breaking the car/bank.

Don't forget that the GR is a manual. Yes it's got "flat-foot shifting" but
can you imagine how much faster it would be with a DSG type of flappy paddle gearbox!!! Or a sequential box. I love this GR and I hope to own one some day.

@@crossplane46 I apologize to you sir.. I've just checked. I watched a modified GR show and they had fitted flat foot shifting in it and bumped the power up to 316 bhp. I can't remember the channel it was on "RUclips" but the guy building it is a test driver for GR. The standard GR only has IMT "intelligent manual transmission". Thank you for letting me know or I'd have spent the rest of my life thinking it came standard 🙏👊

It seems like Top Gear principals gave the leftovers of the budget to make this series of videos. Just use some smartphones, do some lame laps and upload them to the channel!
Fun fact, this cars are not even in the same group class.
Golf should go against Corolla and Yaris should go agains Polo.
Then we would really see how much better GR Yaris is then anything WV can offer at the moment.
1 1/2 years to go to get my own (yep, thats how much i’ll have to wait), then PPF the life out of it, abuse it as it should be and i will still be able to show it to my grandchild (if i get one), because this is a Toyota.

The GR Yaris is a very special car being a homologation. The Golf is not special at all. In fact in my country it's mostly driven by tough guy wanna be Moroccan migrants.
