I was looking at high-end Presage Seikos, but once the option of Grand Seiko was presented to me, I think that's definitely the way to go. Initially I was a bit apprehensive due to the quartz movement, but after reading up on the movement, I was really able to appreciate the engineering put into it and I think the movement is far nicer than the automatics used in this price level of Seiko. The finishing and attention to detail is just in a league above, paired with the reliability of the movement.

It’s like when realtors suggest buying the cheapest home in the nicest area, rather than the most expensive home in a less desirable area

    • @BMH1965
      @BMH1965 3 года назад +25

To use you analogy, the value of the expensive home in a cheap area will drop (never buy the most expensive home in an area - the price will always drop when compared to other homes in the same area!) and the value of the cheapest home in an expensive area will rise.

When it comes to real estate, it’s all about location. So definitely a cheaper home in an appreciating area/city > an expensive home in the middle of the boonies.

not the entry level GS. the spring drive is where it gets better. spring drive is in the mid range and above in grand Seiko
the presage is the better buy here. its action is much smoother than the base GS.

@@Pete...NoNotThatOne Well i bought a Seiko quartz watch in 1978 it was not an expensive watch with a 7546 movement. It still runs perfectly never needed any service so i expect it will go on running for another 8 years more and it will be 50 years old...So 50 years between services seems also something a middle of the road Seiko can do...

Good comparison. Honestly didn’t even think of it even though I own the black version of that grand seiko. It definitely takes a second to rationalize having such an expensive quartz when the hobby tries to ingrain the idea, at least from what I’ve experienced, that anything above 200,if even that, for a quartz is overpriced. I enjoy mind, looking down at it you can definitely tell the quality at least in my opinion. Glad to see some other with GS quartz out there!

The SJE073J1 is a very nice watch, and as you mentioned the dial is stunning as well as the blued seconds hand. The only downside I see with this and other cheap, but not cheap mechanical watches if that eventually they will need a service that could be a third or so the cost of the watch itself. The GS just requires a battery that you could carefully change at home. Its sealed movement should provide a lifetime of service.

Your video really helped me with my decision. The GS may be simple looking, but its elegant and the quality of the fit and finish is stunning... I own the SBGX263. It will forever be in my collection. I later bought the Shunbun. The SBGX263 packs a lot of punch and stands up against other GS watches, even the Shunbun to be completely honest. The Shubun has the one-and-only Spring Drive movement whereas the SBGX has the over-engineered quartz that is also one-of-a-kind. The SBGX simply over-delivers.

I'm surprised with the comments, that sje073 is so classy in metal ( I have one).
That GS feels plain and boring in comparison, even with a springdrive movement I would still pick the seiko regardless of the price.
Also that sje073 isn't that dressy, it does have some sport casual vibes too, and it's a strap monster.
Easy to dress up or down to your liking.
And lastly I'd say the case profile is truly special.

Interesting choice, i have to say the dial on the Seiko is really studnning & I like the style of the bracelet more but you make a great point about the overengineering on the Grand Seiko's movement as well as the general finish, and the hands+indices on GS are just on another level. It's a tough choice but I think i'd go for the GS but the Seiko is definitely punching high above its weight. Great video 👍

I have GS SBGA413 and this SJE173, and outside of the movement they're nearly identical. In fact I could make an argument that 173 is better because the clasp when closed is flush with the bracelet, the GS clasp sticks out, also the 173 is thinner than my GS. Make no mistake, the SJE173 has GS finishing.
Of course the main difference is the movement, 6L35 vs spring drive 9R35. Hard to compare a spring drive and a mechanical movement, it's mostly preference I believe, but I'll personally give that to the win to the 9R65. Now if the 6L35 were adjusted to 5 or 6 positions, well now we're talking a dead heat IMHO.
I paid $1800 for SJE173 and $6300 in trade dollars to get the SBGA413.

Cool video! Really nicely done. Just for the sake of being complete: You seem to omit that the Grand Seiko's real estate on the dial, that is the indices and hands, are lightyears ahead of the Presage. Then the blue hand on the Presage isn't heat treated steel, but rather painted, which gives a particular vibe that isn't as it should be at this price point. The 6L35 is a solid movement though. I have it in the King Seiko limited, but the quartz is more special. They are both cracking watches, but I'll take the Grand Seiko quartz any day of the week. Also because the 37 x 44 x 10mm sizing is so eminently wearable. It's fantastic. Thanks for posting this though.

Having owned high end presage, as well as grand seiko, and the king seiko reissue in red.
I think both the king and GS are one step ahead interms of finishing compared to presage. And surprisingly I think the king seikos are built better than the low end quartz grand seikos. Those cheaper GS have nice polish on the case but that's pretty much it. The bracelets are sooo bad on the cheape rGS compared to high end presage and is not even comparable to the king seiko braclet which I think is up to GS level I think. If the king seiko had a 6L movment it would be easily over 3000 dollars. So I think of it as a budget and more every day wearing GS since it's more brushed and will show less scratches. The very high presages still r unique and great especially the porcelain dials.

The presage is better and the dial is amazing. The GS looks like it’s trying to hard to be a Rolex and it’s a quartz so huge turn off, its the overpriced watch here considering it’s a quartz.

The video doesn't show how much better the gs is, you need to see it. Quartz or mechanical, after 15 mechanical watches its nice to open the box and find a watch with the correct time..its like when you ask your wife if she's ready and she is...

Dial and hands on GS are not comparable to Seiko. It's hand work.

A quartz watch is incomparable with a mechanical counterpart. I own both sje073 and a GS SBGA203. GS costs twice as much as sje073. Moreover, SJE073 is not a everyday watch, more of a dress watch. GS is much more comfortable to wear too.
