"My father was Maekar, the First of his Name. My brother Aegon reigned after him, when I had refused the throne, and he was followed by his son Aerys, whom they called the Mad King" I still get chills
Of course, you should be embarrassed and ashamed In fact. Crying is the ultimate display of emotions. It's a weakness. Did you know-and this is an actual statistical fact, by the way-that male children between the ages of 7 and 10 who cry more tend to hold unemployment status much longer in adulthood.
In the previous episode they captured a Lannister scout, and Rob let him go with a message that suggested that Rob's entire army would be marching towards Tywin Lannister instead of Jamie. Apparently nobody questioned it because Northerners have a reputation for not being especially cunning and deceitful, and because they assumed that Rob wouldn't have the best judgment because of his age, and would actually do exactly what he boasted he would. So the Northerners sent a small force to give the appearance that the scout had been told the truth, and the majority to take Jamie's army by surprise.
This was groundbreaking for two reasons. The first book set him up as the main character, who you always expect to be saved at the last second somehow. Then he's dead. Also, because Bean was the face plastered on every promotion, killing off the main bankable star in Season 1 was unheard of in American TV.
“All the gods” includes the Old Gods… It’s a common phrase in ASOIF. That said it’s an interesting point, and somewhat surprising that he didn’t swear “in front of The Seven” or something.
Not only did they cut off his head, they did it with his ancestral valyrian steel great sword. 😭 Also, "love is the death of duty"-Maester Aemon; his duty would have been staying true to claiming Stannis. He folded to save his family. Everything honorable (Dany) til now.
Aria would not have been killed, she would have been captured for ransom as a Stark. And, if Joffery was smart, he would have known the value of Ned Stark as a prisoner, as his mother was clearly trying to council him on....but Joffery is Joffery. Trust me, I think EVERYONE was both shocked and mortally wounded when they executed Ned. This show is absolutely BRUTAL but its so great, too, and there's so much more of the story!
Pretty crazy that even in today's modern medicine, people do still die from seemingly minor cuts and abrasions being infected. People lose limbs due to infection. Bacteria can be brutal.
Back when I first watched this episode I was convinced the witch lady was just going to ride away on Khal Drogo's horse. Like the whole blood sacrifice thing was just ploy because she knew she needed to get the fuck out of there before Drogo died and they all started killing each other. Would've been really funny seeing Dany leave the tent and then her riding out the other side.
And then they cut to inside the tent and you see a _Home Alone_ style setup with a bunch of cardboard cutouts moving around on strings and a boom box playing demon noises.
This was the episode that really set the tone for the whole series... no one is safe. We hadn't really seen that before on American television, at least not in this sort of a show.
To fill out something another one said. Robb released the scout that counted to 20'000, who then reported that number. Robb sent 2'000 men instead to move, giving him the majority of the army to get Jamie
23:45 - OH CHANDRA! HUGS 🫂 ❤ We all took Ned's Betrayal hard too. But for every main character you love & lose in this show ~ you'll get 2 new ones you'll end up loving even more. Just wait!
Yes, "he" will miss out on the whole battle now. Funny how in the books, where words about battle cost the same as words about a conversation, "he" didn't miss out on the battle :P
One of the most memorable episodes in tv show history. This was horrible the first time, and it still is painful to watch. Thanks for sharing your reaction to it.
all of us cried, all of us pleaded, all of us went through the stages of grief, and then all of us realized... this wasn't going to be like any other TV show in history. This is just the beginning... winter is coming!
You know whats even more wild about Tyrion story how he once fell in love, the book version........ Jamie admitted to someone that their farther forced him to lie and say it was set up with a prostitute, it wasn't. Tywin is evil!
This is the moment when you realise that no-one is safe in this show! Couldn't believe it, the first time I watched it, and still get a tear in my eye every time now! Love your reactions, I just wish the GoT ones were a little more frequent ... because I'm greedy in that way! 😜😂
They hint at Jaime's prowess as a warrior in the show... they talk about it more in the book. He nearly kills his way to Robb in the battle. When Jaime is presented to Cat... he mentions losing his sword. It's because it got stuck in the body of the last Robb's bannermen he killed... and that was the only way they were able to stop him.
Ned did everything right, except play the game well. Trying to protect his family, he may have inadvertently cost them everything. Ned is a great leader, but not sure he'd be a good king.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but you should check out the Game of Thrones: History & Lore videos that were released after every season, it should fill you in on a lot of the history and culture that the tv show doesn't have time to explain.
I heard for people who finished all those videos and wanted even more info, they even released some books to fill in more details about everything! I'm being a dick, but at a certain point it does seem really silly to search out more and more videos to find out the backstory, when you know it's all adapted from the book series haha.
The good and honorable are usually the victims of the corrupt, greedy, and the irredeemable. If Eddard Stark had of only immediately gone to the King with the information, and not informed Cersei first, he would have lived. Instead he did the honorable thing, of giving Cersei the chance at leaving before the King found out the truth. However, schemers, plotters, and the power hungry made their own moves. That's one thing about this series. Being honorable means you follow rules, and it makes you weak against those that have no rules, and will do anything for power or revenge.
I don't think Drogo's cut would have turned that bad if Daenarys hadn't allowed Mirri to "treat" the cut. She deliberately made it worse in revenge for the horrors the Dothraki visited on her town.
@@penoyer79 Well you _do_ know now how far they’ve watched. I just informed you in my previous comment. And if you “know what goes on RUclips,” then you should remember from their intro to the very first episode that these videos were recorded many months ago. That’s how I found out.
also I’m glad you guys are doing week by week because the binge watchers just don’t understand the pain all of us watching in real time had to go through 😭
Oh no, that started way before. It's why many weren't surprised by this episode. Once you see Sean Bean and he's one of the good guy's, you know he's not making it through the film or series. It was the same for Bill Paxton too. He was another actor known for dying in roles.
It’s so awkward when the female half of reactors show the appropriate emotional response to that scene, and the guys always laugh it off, rather than let themselves feel or show any emotion on camera.😮😢
So true. She never specified that the horse’s life was the one paying for Drogo’s. Chandra saying she hoped Drogo wouldn’t come back as a sort of zombie was so prophetic, as well.
18:19 I always find it interesting that Tywin is the "bad guy" people choose in this story. Was it harsh? Certainly... but this was a prostitute who was using emotional leverage to try to gain fortune while hiding all truths from Tyrion, his son. Should he have allowed the marriage to stand? NO... absolutely not. The prostitute got WELL PAID and his son learned a lesson about giving in to emotions and temptations. A lesson he proves not to have learned. Was Tywin cruel... yes, but I say it was something a REAL FATHER would do to teach his son a harsh lesson about a harsh world.
Not that it means much, but Ned's "confession" was worthless. He confessed before The Seven. The Seven are not his gods. It meant nothing. Ned thought he was being tricky, but Ned was never accused of being clever.
SPOILERS about consequences of this episode It's funny how this episode 9 is a bloodbath not just because of Ned, but in terms of tracing a direct line from decisions made here to future slaughter. Drogo and his fetal son die first, the Red Wedding directly results from the agreement here in combination with another bad decision made later, and Daenerys is set on a path that leads to the end of the series.
This was the first episode I saw when my parents were still watching it. I only stayed to see it because I like Sean Bean. Oh... oops... oh... I also have always liked Jason Mamoa. I will continue watching because of him. Oh... oh no... I still went back and watched the rest of season one eventually, and continued watching through the last episode. I remember starting to watch this show and not really liking the casting for Jorah Mormont because in the book he's described as a big bear of a man with a full beard, so I pictured him like a younger version of the actor who plays his father Lord Commander Mormont and this actor didn't look at all like Ser Jorah, but Ian Glenn quickly won me over. He has the gravitas to pull this character off, plus he looks surprisingly stylish even in blood and dirt covered rags, which is an interesting choice I'd never would have considered and brings something new to this character, which IMO calls back to his backstory about how he had a materialistic and expensive wife and that led him to trade slaves and flee to the other side of the Narrow Sea after Ned Stark caught on to what he was doing. Seems this version of good old Jorah also liked the finer things in life just like his Kardashian-like Targaryen-lookalike former wife, even if he's also fine with roughing it because he's a warrior of Bear Island, after all.
The real game of thrones starts here

The winter rains will break their hearts but they won’t be hardened soldiers of winter until the last snow falls.

Ned's death was really shocking.
Fortunately, the show never went to such levels of violence again after.
Yeah I am glad they toned it down after this.

If someone doesn't cry or at least jump out of their chair at Ned's death, there's basically no point in doing a Game of Thrones reaction.

And because it's episode 9 and not the season finale haha. (I do think the final scene of the season befits its finale status just as well though.)
