  • Whether or not Freud h8mself thought so, many psychotherapists, even some analysts I suspect, think we are responsible only for out avytions, not for our thoughts, impulses, desires and feelings. Jesus famously disagrees. I explain why I think Jesus is right.

    Hello, I think Kojin Karatani would agree with you, he took a smiliar perspective on his book called "Nation and Aesthetics: On Kant and Freud". He tries to put emphasis on how Freud designed Super Ego. Hence, psychoanalysis deals with inner reality, it would be a missleading path to use thought-action separation. Psychoanalysis is concerned about desires and thoughts from the begining.

    I think that the most important thing in psychoalanyst is to for us to to get over of our envy and hatefullness thoughts. As you have said as long as we are exprience these we are going ro be a calm person, we are full of hate and we can not fogive the other people and ourselves. I myself had exprience that during my therapy

    Hi Don,
    This is Leanne - I really enjoyed this.
    Question: how do we reconcile these ideas with offering a non-judgmental stance in therapy? How might be interpret to a patient that their hostility/envy/lust is leading to self-dislike? Does this come across as blaming or shaming the patient?
    I agree with everything you're saying but wonder how to apply it clinically

    • @doncarveth
      @doncarveth  3 года назад +3

      The trick is to show them the inevitable painful consequences of their actions and feelings. I pointed out to a patient who was a thief how he could never hold on to any ill gotten gains. Or I would point out to a woman full of hostility to others how this hostility inevitably got turned on her self in the form of painful accidents. One points to help patients unconsciously punish themselves for behaviour they themselves unconsciously consider bad, even when they may consciously do you know this.

      Socratic dialogue helps. Frame an insight as a question or series of questions homing in on an insight they can arrive at themselves.
      Obviously the standard ethical stance still applies, the timing has to feel right, you need to have built rapport with the cliënt and built a safe environment where there’s a feeling of mutual trust. Confrontation can meet a lot of resistance. Framing it as a question also paves the way to stimulating the mind to think towards a future oriented solution.

    Hi Dr Carveth,
    I'm curious to know your thoughts on psychedelic psychotherapy. I was struck by a comment in one of Stan Grof's books that "the phenomenology of psychodynamic experiences in LSD sessions is to a large extent in agreement with the basic concepts of classical psychoanalysis. If psychodynamic sessions were the only type of LSD experience, the observations from LSD psychotherapy could be considered to be laboratory proof of the basic Freudian premises."

    • @doncarveth
      @doncarveth  3 года назад +8

      I’m glad others are doing research in this area but I confess I am sceptical of any and all shortcuts. I am biased because all my LSD experiences back in the 1960s qualified as “bad trips“! I think sanity is a fragile thing and LSD can easily disrupt it in ways that are sometimes hard to repair. I’m sceptical of all quick fixes. It took many years to become neurotic or borderline or psychotic and hence it will take many years on the couch to repair.

    The dividing split wether above the conscious threshold of good bad in a virtual vertical division above the threshold of the unconscious threshold also left to right quarters below conscious awareness good bad yet both…
    I think Jesus points that out that the spilt occurs to one’s own ego at the cost of dividing the Other.
    Scapegoating complex.
    We all have done or do this yet when one understands truly it comes to the detriment of yourself then maybe we will may put an end to it out of our own naturally inclined self interest and group human nature to do so.

    Freud may have poked fun at “love thy neighbor,” but he certainly had a difficult time with Jung’s death wishes against himself, according to Jung. We can become aware of the unconscious, but then what? I like what you are saying: We should use the unconscious to mold our behavior, such that we become good.

    • @doncarveth
      @doncarveth  3 года назад +4

      But I am saying more than that. We must become good not only in our behaviour but also in our thoughts and feelings and desires. That I think that’s what Jesus is saying and I agree with him.

      @@doncarveth I think it’s also interesting to ponder the eastern philosophical traditions in how to deal with thoughts and feelings. And especially, when it comes to destructive feelings (feelings like you want to harm another person), those feelings should be repressed or suppressed, which runs counter to the western ideas that we have to talk about hurting someone, etc…
      Talking about how much you feel that you want to hurt someone is not healthy.

    Freud versus Jesus is surely a rich vein to tap. "I have found little that is good about human beings on the whole.In my experience most of them are trash, no matter if they publicly subscribe to this or that doctrine or none at all..."-Freud. Freud said he cleared up the miseries of the neurotic only to open him up to the misery of life. Freud would consider you optimistic I'm sure:)

    "I should desire the breasts and the bottoms of the person i love", ideally, yes, but isn't it rather a fantasy than a reality? Maybe intellectually you think you should, but your body often has a position of its own. Many people lose the physical desire for their partner that they still love and not because they want to. Intellectually they might still think they should, but their body decided not to anymore. How does someone help them, if they even can be helped

      Good question. When I was young unions were not offering much real therapy and I needed it so I went to a Freudian and I’m glad I did. In those days unions were all philosophical, and mythological, and spiritual. But I had a gigantic Oedipus complex and Prieto pool pathology to boot. Nowadays unions have grown up. They’ve integrated much of main stream psychoanalysis. Nowadays they like me for more than my main stream Freudian call leagues. Thanks for asking
