  • A Stressful Corn Harvest (& FACING MY FEAR)
After years of driving the grain cart (buggy as we call it…) I got FIRED!
Not really… our friend Monty is helping us out this year, and he just had a hip replacement surgery last May so I gave him the buggy as there’s not as much getting on and off the tractor.
But now I have a new job… and its the one job I’ve been really scared to do.
Harvest 2019 is ending the way it began.
Slow, painful and full of little stressors.
Just know that you’re not alone… we all are feeling the pressure.
We will get through this, and do it all over again next year.
    #corn #harvest2019 #newjob

This is a great video, showing how much work it takes to put food on the table for people across the nation. Farmers are some of the hardest workers in nation. Farming is also the one profession that is neglected by politics, over regulated, abused by city folks who move to the country side and belittled by many others.

Your inner strength is unbelievable Sandi. Weather, government rules and regulations, market conditions and even remote labor actions can all take their toll, unfortunately not just on your business but on your relationships too. To me it seemed one could almost see it in your face this time. Yet as I watch this video, I'm thinking to myself, this is truly grace under pressure. I hope that doesn't seem glib. I enjoy your videos so much because it reminds me that there are still genuine, hard-working, good-hearted people in this world, and some of them are even on RUclips! Best of luck finishing the harvest and Happy Thanksgiving from the US. :-)

Facing your fear. Your first instinct of approaching the icy down hill portion slowly was absolutely correct. While having the tractor "pull" the wagons is very desirable, the fact you had a slower approach was very important. You are obviously a clever person so here an explanation. Energy goes up with the square of the speed.(One of those laws of physics) So if you approach a down hill at 8 mph instead of 16 mph you have to control only a quarter of the energy. Not the weight, but the kinetic energy of the wagons and the tractor. This is what is doing the damage. So, even though you gave yourself a huge scare, the fact you started slowly before it went wrong meant the wagons did not have as much energy to completely overcome the tractor. Stay safe.

Back in the day most farm wives were city girls the girls raised on the farm know better than marry a farmer.
The mud on the road is a good issue there have been several wrecks in my area usually young inexperienced drivers and one really severe wreck almost claimed a life.
I wish i could help but the best i can is say be careful and take care of each other you make a good team and every farmer knows it will be better next year

Rule number 1 ; keep the tractor in front of your wagons 👌. N start in a high enough gear you don’t have to clutch up a gear cuz you’ll never get it in one. The instant you see that tongue start coming around throttle up n slam into your load to straighten it up. Never touch the brakes on blacktop or even gravel. Glad you made it 👍

Truck went completely sideways on me at one point. Almost had a heart attack. Luckily didn’t touch the brakes and regained control. When you’re loaded with animals you have even more responsibility to keep everyone safe. That’s my scary farm story for this year. :)

A couple years ago, we did not have a strike to limit LP, but so much was used for corn in the fall, that many people that used LP to heat their rural homes & businesses had none and it was a cold January in Wisconsin (-30F | -35C actual). The National Guard actually had to go from place to place getting some of the elderly someplace else to stay for a few weeks. Finally enough trucks came in from down south to start filling people's tanks.

Our test weight was low this year here in Minnesota too. The moisture wasn't to bad 20 to 24%. Dry corn for us here is 14.5%. We were lucky enough that it thawed out enough for us to get all our tillage done. We are in a winter storm watch for this weekend. I don't care who you are having the wagons start pushing you down a hill like that will scare the heck out of you. We had troubles getting dryer gas here too. Thanks for the video.

Isn't it amazing with driving how often the right thing to do is the complete opposite of our instincts of what to do? I'm fine with pulling horses in a two horse trailer and driving a tractor, but beyond that...no thanks! Thankfully, that is not something I have to deal with. As for snow, aside from getting the horses fed and correctly blanketed, no road travel is required. With large snowfall, the whole town and city shuts down. I admire the hard work that you, Mark and all other farmers do. May 2020 be prosperous for us all.

And also we have airbreaks (by law) on our wagons so they can't push you town the hill :-D ... the maximum weight for Tractor and trailer on the road is 40 tons

There's a propane shortage in the midwest as well. Corn harvest in N. IL still only 50% complete.

Mark likes to video bomb , if that's a thing? Saw your Insta story about the sheep barn fabric failure. Geeeeez, you are on a roll. Time to let that Super Sheppard cape fly or retreat to a tropical paradise and sip adult umbrella drinks. Seriously, my heart sank for you when I saw that clip. Wish I lived closer!

I think certain regulatory requirements for farmers in Canada are overboard...too many regulations so people look for ways to get around them, and in the end only the government benefits, it only has downsides for the producer. You folks are hardworking, awesome people!

I'm guessing that a bushel of corn there is 56# like it is here in the United States. I know if the moisture is too high, they really dock you on the price. Good luck with the harvest, hope all goes well and you all stay safe.
Not sure if you celebrate Thanksgiving, if you do, hope it's a good one for you and your family.

I don't think there's anybody on Earth who wouldn't be afraid of a pair of loaded wagons z-locking and ganging a tractor sideways under them. Grain is a great fuel and tractors don't run right upside down.

Sandy i dont mean any disrespect,I think you are the ultimate girl and not bad lookin. I rank you right up there with my momma she was the ultimate farm girl and she wasnt bad lookin either. She was a servant and worked hard on our farm here in Oklahoma. I dont think she ever ate a hot meal bless her heart she waited on everyone coming from the field, but you could always count on herand i think you remind me of her.It truly is a rarity to have good women beside the man. God bless!
