The first time i witnessed mikel's ball holding and progressing quality was in the FA cup final against united when he contributed to Didier's goal. His qualities shone against top midfielders like paul scholes, micheal carick and co in that game. Chelsea went on to win that trophy.Mikel then went on to register further stellar performances in other major finals for chelsea like UCL and EUL. He also won AFCON for Nigeria. Pre-2006, Obi played exclusively as an attacking MF and excelled in that position for club and country (see FIFA U20 WC2005). Drogba was not the MVP. Mikel had 86 touches of the ball, 2nd only to Lampard. 3 aerial fuels won, highest of the two team's players. 88.1% pass accuracy. He was the reason Chelsea survived 120 minutes together with Petr Cech. He was actually rated as the MVP of that match on several platforms.

His slow pace invited the press. That's why he spent so much time wrestling with midfielders. Rodri gets rid of the ball very quickly and most of his movement is while repositioning without the ball. Declan Rice drives forward with the ball really fast before anyone can get to him.

    • @princeetu8831

Busquets was even slower. Pirlo was never fast. You don't need all that pace if your mind is 2 steps ahead of everyone's.

and nicolas jackson had the effontery to talk shit to mikel... this is getting me mad all over again. chelsea would kill to have a young mikel in their team right now. Ten hag would kill for him to be a united player right now. Press resistant. strong as shit, and can still pick a pass. fuck. If chelsea had mikel before they bought caicedo they wouldnt have bought enzo for sure. now I'm older i understand why united and chelsea fought for him. he was a baller ahead of his time. the original rodri. what a player.
