They're not totally impartial anywhere ('cause that's just impossible) but they are at least delivered in a neutral tone in a lot of European countries.
These birds are such badasses I'm actually surprised that there aren't more monsters based on them. The only time I ever saw a monster-bird modeled after a shrike was when Lost Tapes tried to do it with their take on Thunderbirds (and even then, they didn't portray it as a bird, they made it a pterosaur).
I saw one impale a rock dove on a long thorn in a tree; it then removed the wings, the legs, and all the feathers and devoured it. It was unbelievable watching such a small bird tear a larger bird apart so quickly. I’ll never forget it.
There is actually a book that does use them. Check out the covers for Hyperion Cantos. The monster there is the Shrike. Named after the bird :)) The books are actually great and brought me here.
In my d&d game, one of the greater deities of the realm is named Vevin the Shrike - a war goddess who favors brutal and non-kosher tactics to destroy enemies. She is most often depicted bearing slate grey (but blood-dipped) wings, wielding a spear, and wearing a black cloth blindfold over her eyes. Her gaze turns people (and fellow gods) to stone, so she wears the cloth to protect her followers and divine infantry. Her holy symbol is an upward-pointing spear with wings on either side, piercing a skull through the temples. The whole idea is based on this bird
The dragons are on the way, but there are thes little devil birds that fly in from the east slaughtering all of Westeros.... and they've all got floppy wieners, or at least something to impale you on lmao!!!
Nobody tell the commentor that Eagles have been known to carry off children and kill large mammals by pulling them off mountains and cliffs and then feasting on the pulverized remains splattered on the rocks.
Vlad the Impaler's spirit animal. Shows some level of tool use as well, using an exterior 'object' to allow to better manipulate prey. I suspect this behaviour started with a few shrikes realising the sharpness of thorns could be used to hold prey, with this bird then being more successful, breeding and either its other smart descendants , like how some hawks have learnt to spread fires to flush out prey
Imagine how fucking cool it would be to genetically mix one of these with like a giant falcon or some shit. It could pick up small children and impale them on fucking signs and shit like that.
Eh, Shrikes developed these methods only becuz they're so small. Peregrines by themselves are already fine. Although, if you gave the Pigeon's navigation abilities to a Peregrine falcon...
Imagine walking though the bush and finding an adorable little bird. Then you decide to follow it as it hops from bush to bush. Then the bird finds a small lizard. Flys to the nearest cactus and impales it on a cactus spine all while the lizard is still alive. Then the bird flys away. How creepy would that be.
I'm unsure how large it could get while still having enough agility to go after high-yield prey. Just look at the world's largest shark, the Whale Shark - it's solely a filter-feeder, as it's the only viable feeding type that can reasonably sustain it with the lowest cost of energy, especially since plankton are one of the largest biomasses in the sea. Whale sharks are also completely docile towards humans; many photos and videos are online of divers getting very close to them without the Whale Shark even seeming to acknowledge their presence.
@@drg8687 That was a long time ago when there was big enough prey for the Meg. Now it would starve to death since there simply isn't enough big animals that feed on the plankton. Don't exactly remember why all that prey when extinct so don't ask me.
@@drg8687 okay so I just checked on google why they died. While oxygen isn't a factor, food wasn't the only reason. As the world got colder the Meg lost some of the areas where they lived. They weren't warm blooded unlike the killer sperm whale which was their competition along with great whites
