One thing to note for anyone watching/reading this: every school is different so this info is specific to CAVA, not necessarily all of K12. We're in WA and we've had a different experience. My youngest is in 4th grade so I know that makes a big difference. Science and History aren't optional for us, for example. Since it is for you, can you mark it skipped to clear it? You can't do it from the screen you showed, but there is another place you can. As far as the Learning Coach being the teacher, we haven't had that experience either. The teacher does teach new concepts in Class Connects, not just review. Also, I know there is a transition at 3rd grade where the material stops being written for the LC and the student is addressed directly in the lesson. The lesson guides don't have scripts because the LC isn't teaching. The downfall to that is that is incorporates more screen time because the teaching is coming from the online school modules. We still have workbooks with offline work that I have to check, but I only have to step in and "teach" if he is struggling with understanding. We also don't have to submit any of our workbook pages. I think that is probably very school/teacher dependent. There are review questions and quizzes built into the online modules that the teacher uses to see how the student is doing and we have occasional assignments through an online platform called Classkick that the teacher can view. I don't have to scan/take pictures of workbook stuff though. I totally agree about K12's extracurricular/elective choices. My 4th grader has art and it's not very interesting even for his age. My 7th grader only has PE and it's very independent. Overall, I would advise anyone who is considering K12 to really connect with the specific school they will be enrolling with because while the K12 curriculum is the same across the board, how individual schools and teachers use it varies a lot! Some schools don't use everything, some have more/less class connects, some require more work turned in, etc. Our school is working really well for us, but I've definitely noticed that based in comments here on RUclips and in K12 Facebook groups, WAVA seems to be better put together than many other K12 schools. We love with, but I 100% feel that this wouldn't be a good fit for everyone, so it's important to dig into the specifics (like you're doing with this video) but make sure the info is relevant to the school near you.
My children attend OHVA and we all love it. It is very similar to what you have mentioned at WAVA. We don’t turn in much work at all and like you said my 3rd grader is very independent with his work. His teachers teach him the lessons and then he does it. I do have a kindergartener and it is way more hands on for me but I don’t mind it. I agree that it’s all about the school and how they work out everything.
@@amandacoombs947 I think this is an area where K12 could improve immensely. I don't think it's clear to many that K12 is just the curriculum provider, not the school. Yes the amount!! My youngest was in TK though and she only had 4 assignments. My oldest daughter did 2nd grade last year and some of those assignments were an hour long. This is our second year as well. I noticed every teacher is different with the work samples. I just a video on the pros and cons on my page.
I just started k12 Cava in California and I had to put my son in school last minute and feel after the first week he has learned a lot and enjoys it very much. As a newbie mom it’s teaching me how to help coach him better as well. They have us make them do assignments online and off then I sent in his paperwork on Friday. I don’t know how long I will be doing this for but what I do know is so far we are bonding more. I am going to try to check out his school to see how I can socialize him more during this independent study.
I’m at a K12 school and they have live classes and we don’t teach the lesson. You must be in one that is asynchronous, but not all of them are like that.
Wow, mine is in 2nd grade, I haven’t been asked for any work to be turned in. We do the assignments on the Daily Plan and that is pretty much it except for logging the PE attendance.
i'm in 12th grade and i been doing k12 since 8th grade and when i say !!! its hard asl i thought homeschool would be a lil easy but 10+ homework a day is crazy fr !
A lot much lesson 😩 Special ELA. It's to much reading. More extra assignment. More i Read Math and Reading 35 minutes every weeks. It's crazy!! But I do what is humanly possible with my fifth grade daughter. One is practically a teacher. Its very stressful. They have to read too much. I wake up my daughter at 7:00 a.m. so that it ends at 3:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. But there are so many lessons in ELA plus virtual classes. That it's still 8:00 at night and we haven't finished 😩 It's very frustrating. I really do it for the care of my children. And for your safety at home from the pandemic.
My kids have done K12 using CAVA Sonoma for 3 years. The first year was a lot of work. The past two years have been less work, and very easy. As they get older, the kids get more independent. Younger kids might be more hands on.
We're with k12 Arva arkansas virtual academy and I have a first grader and our experience is different we are not required to turn in anything, we don't log PE its all automatic. My first grader is independent and can do most of the things on his own. I also have a kindergartener and he has learned so much since he started.
Nice I bet that takes a lot of the pressure off. Sounds like it differs from school to school. I do see my daughter learning a lot she's actually testing pretty high in math and reading. I'm the one carrying most of the stress as her learning coach.
I'm late but wish I had watched this before enrolling my son. He is a 3rd grader and just started TOPS. As a recent resigned 4-8 teacher, I was a little hesitant about K12 but we decided to give it a try since I recently had a newborn. I too feel the work load is ridiculous. I also feel they spend way too much time online imo. He has 2-3 class connects and is in front of the screen for 3 hours with a total of a 15-20minute break. This isn't including his school assignments for the day. Definitely looking for other options next year.
Please, remember, the teacher is not setting this criteria for logs and work samples. That is the criteria set by the state you are in. Standardized testing and constant data collection is a huge frustration for teachers. As an online teacher, I have to give up class connect time so I can go administer test required by the state. It frustrates the teacher as much, if not more, than parents. You just have your students growth to worry about. We have to worry about the growth of ALL of our students to validate our profession to a bunch of bureaucrats. You are an involved parent and you really focus on your daughters education. For every one of you, there are 10 parents who just make excuses for student failure. I agree with you on the elementary music and art programs. Since that is my area of expertise, I am pushing for better programming in those electives. Hopefully, my experience in those B&M classrooms will transfer to better curriculums in music and art for k12 elementary, middle, and junior high. The new organization of the company, by actual educators, is looking very promising. Big things are happening and things are getting better.
I can't speak for the 1st grader age group from where I'm from but my daughter is in 4th grade. She ELA which of course was a lot of reading and writing (and had vocabulary and spelling built in), math, science, history, social studies, state history, art, p.e., music, and 3 strides that were optional. She also had to keep track of p.e, health, and technology which she had to use the honor system for. She really hasn't had to send in any work except in math class connect if they were working on a few problems as a class. She also would have a few assignments on usa test prep. Recently her math teacher been having her to complete assignments on freckle. Mon she would have 3 class connects, tues and wed 2, and thurs 1. At times school most definitely seemed overwhelming but it was good that she could pretty much work at her own pace so she completed a lot of stuff early.
I switched over to connections academy. It’s not as suffocating as k12 was. I felt like I was drowning when I was in k12. The curriculum was so much further ahead than when I left public school. I was on another math level then I was in public school. I’m in 8th grade as of the moment.
This has to be where you live vs where we live and not the k-12 program itself. We live in Ohio and it is called OHVA. I have now been with OHVA for over 3 years. My 1st grader turns in very little. Maybe one handwriting sample. NO PE either. My Fifth grader has a couple websites they use (schoology and USA Test prep) those websites he does tests that are submitted to the teacher upon completion. Sometimes he has writing assignments we upload from word or in math we take pictures of his math assignment and upload that but that is about it. Never any PE for elementary. I did however see that it will be different in middle school.
Yes I'm realizing now after all the comments that every school using the K12 curriculum works a bit different. We've always had to do PE logs and submit work samples which I'm used to by now but I do want to see if I can take a load off maybe next year we are looking into a different school.

ive been with k12 (Minnesota Virtual Academy) since I was five and 6th grade was the WORST. They had one QUICK lesson about the new system in the grade and that was it. And I completely forgot how to use it. You have NO idea how stressful it was. I had a shitty laptop that worked on windows 7 (i got a new one that works on windows 10 thank god) and it was horrible. BUT. there is great parts of it. I've had the same teacher for two years, and she's great. she does things the same way and i'm so happy that I got her again. Most problems I've had with K12 is, K12 itself. It always has problems, it glitches, etc etc. But the teacher's? Their really good!!

I watched the cleaning motivation video on "MarieLove Asbury". Arabella and Nolan were playing outdoors. They fought over the pitcher where water was poured into the toy set. They have to share a pitcher while taking turns. It's hard for me to believe Marie is pregnant with her 4th baby.
this information is really more teacher by teacher, then all of k-12 academy. k-12 schools is meant to teach the child, depending on the course you applied your child for. the parent shouldnt be teaching the child. the class connects are meant to show the children how to work the lessons and the assignments are the same type as theyd have in class. really the reason parents think theyre not doing enough is because they dont realize how little time teachers have with each student to actually teach them one on one 😭. im in 9th grade and have been online schooling for three years now. honestly its like when the teacher explains the lesson to the class at the board then the students work through the assignments alone. thats all they do in class just now theyre not doing it infront of a teacher and instead on their own time, thats why their break time is so long 😭
I am doing K-12 with my kindergarten. Maybe it’s different in different states but we’ve never been required to give any work samples. we have literally been breezing through the assignments I agree it is very time-consuming but we get up early sometimes two different lessons throughout the day next year I will definitely be independently homeschooling that way we have more control of our time and less screen time. Sidenote I had been teaching my son before enrolling him into this program so he’s been reading since he was three years old. Through K12 he’s gotten very high scores and his teacher suggested that we move him up a grade. I just received an email saying they are going to add a class to what he’s already doing and not move him along. I don’t like his new challenged enough so Learning is becoming boring.
Good question lol I would like to know. We had to manually turn on the microphone when they had class connect or when we had testing but who knows if they could just listen in if they wanted to.
This school makes me frustrated. They give too many test, barely letting us learn the information. Art isnt even art its just another version of history. Most of the work they give us is just busy work, and student have stuff to do other than school. I can't say this enough, THE GIVE US TEST EVERYDAY. It stresses us out, and thats why they do it.
@@selahcalderon2832 K12 is the curriculum online schools use. My school is California Virtual Academy of Fresno. Yours should be something along those lines depending on where you live.
When the teacher ask for the work is it everyday or just one one time and did you do public school that's what that's it's alot of work what if I chose my own curriculum will be on my own paste
We just stated with my 3rd grader, It has been completely free so far for us (We live in Ohio and chose the free public school option.) I did see where we will have to supply our own ink for the printer once the ink that came with it runs out, but that will not be a problem for us. I did buy her, her own headset and mouse but the computer they sent came with plain black ones as well.

Does your school offer any clubs for extracurricular? We are in a minecraft club, and cooking club. We meet certain days on zoom and it’s just extra fun and a way to socialize with others! I also agree about the art, it is very much more like another history class. I as well do my own art.
I THINK THEY DID PRE COVID BUT WE DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO ENJOY MOST OF THAT. THEY HAVE RECENTLY STARTED UP THE MONTHLY GET TOGETHERS WE JUST GOT AN ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THAT.

💕🙏🏾💕🙏🏾💕🙏🏾💕good video. Continue on your road on getting that Silver Play Button
Yes thank you ❤️🙏
I watched the cleaning motivation video on "MarieLove Asbury".
My son started kindergarten with K12 and they leave a lot of hw…. Do they listen to everything when you turn on the computer ?
Good question lol I would like to know. We had to manually turn on the microphone when they had class connect or when we had testing but who knows if they could just listen in if they wanted to.
This school makes me frustrated. They give too many test, barely letting us learn the information. Art isnt even art its just another version of history. Most of the work they give us is just busy work, and student have stuff to do other than school. I can't say this enough, THE GIVE US TEST EVERYDAY. It stresses us out, and thats why they do it.
Really? Ugh that does sound frustrating. Can you share which online school you're in so people can know.

@@selahcalderon2832 K12 is the curriculum online schools use. My school is California Virtual Academy of Fresno. Yours should be something along those lines depending on where you live.
@Selah Calderon are you in CAVA too? Do you live in CA?
@@lizad777 sorry i dont say this tpye of information on the internet
so which other online schools do your friends use
Do you think that k12 would work for a child a child w adhd and learning disabilities?
Hi this is what I found online I hope it helps www.k12.com/search.html?query=learning+disabled
Screen time is a major serious issue. I hope you quit that school. It's bad for their eyes, mind and body. Most seriously to me is the eye damage.
When the teacher ask for the work is it everyday or just one one time and did you do public school that's what that's it's alot of work what if I chose my own curriculum will be on my own paste
K12 is the curriculum, you don’t chose it. And the teacher collects work samples once a month, they usually tell you what lessons to turn in.
Me: thinking she meant k-12 as in Melanie Martinez
are the students required to do class connects?
Yes
What does CAVA stand for?
California Virtual Academy
Are the public schools completely free or is their a cost for them?
I have the same question. 🥺
I don't kicked k12 my son is failing my son on the spectrum he can't keep up to much homework but he gets beat up in school the public he doesn't even rember to hand write and as a single mom I don't understand the work
You should try to enroll him in a specialized school for kids with special needs im so sorry he has to go through that people are so mean nowadays
Let me know what you find my kid is on the spectrum but I don’t want to have to do so much
How many hours a day are they spending with k12?
the class connects are between 30-45 mins but it takes us about 3-4 hours a day to get all our lessons done it depends on how well she is getting it
Is this curriculum Bible based in any way?
No. Its public school. Check out abeka for Bible based
am in k12 and i legit do like no work lmao, this school is very easy and i have never once got a lesson from my mom. i transfed to k12 cava in7th grade from real school and compared to cali schools k12 is the easist thing ever, i also have family in WA and they also do nothing we turn in 1 or 2 tests perday but its basicly justa work shet of what youll get in real school. just it looks like a test. and we only have 1-5 live classes per day and 3 of those are only if you have overdues, and just do your work to not get in overdue. this lady has no idea what shes talking about. her kid is just not doing them and lying to her
Does your school offer any clubs for extracurricular? We are in a minecraft club, and cooking club. We meet certain days on zoom and it’s just extra fun and a way to socialize with others!
I also agree about the art, it is very much more like another history class. I as well do my own art.
I THINK THEY DID PRE COVID BUT WE DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO ENJOY MOST OF THAT. THEY HAVE RECENTLY STARTED UP THE MONTHLY GET TOGETHERS WE JUST GOT AN ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THAT.
K12 mom also here in PA!!!
Hi mama we are in CA

On the other evening, I squeezed honey barbecue sauce on my pulled pork that I ate. I also ate some corn, collard greens and Hawaiian rolls. I drank my soft drink. My baby boom mommy sprayed apple cider vinegar on the pulled pork that she baked in the oven.
I don’t know about other K12 schools or lower grades but 5th grade work seemed just right for my daughters grade and my daughter has 3-4 class connects a day with lessons to go with the class. My daughter is very independent so she does most of her lessons on her own I do help when needed as I’m her learning coach. Her classes are broken up so she gets breaks in between. Like I said each state and school is different. My child is in WIVA
Thank you for sharing this is very helpful 🙏💕
I do not even like K-12 cuz I work for cat intelligence agency
@bowenschannel9469 what is the cat intelligence agency
made by a RUclipsr also I liked that before and was kinda cringe at the time
Is it private school
No we did the public option
Its almost like self taught dont do it its like your the teacher i took my kids out.
I agree this is not for those who do not want to homeschool.
