You have put my journey to video perfectly. I had a 25 plus year journey through compound innovations culminating in a 330 fps setup that was an absolute 40 yard tackdriver. Then as my age progressed, my vision declined sending me in a spiral in ability to acquire my sight pins. I gave my bow s away to younger eyes and taught them bow set up, tuning, and maintenance. Have not touched a bow for 7 years. Then, 1 month ago, I came across a you in a review video of the Sanlida $99 dollar package and made the purchase. I have had this bow for one week and through your videos, humble delivery of instruction, and simple to follow techniques, I am once again enjoying a new journey at 62. I am already having really good groups with the included string and arrows which has inspired me to put in an order for B55 strings to build a Flemish string, some GT warrior shafts and weighted inserts. In short, my passion and dedication have returned and I just want to say Thank You. My evenings are now spent with arrows flying true into hay bales with a grin on my face.

I have a single cam that was my first bow ever from cabelas in the 90s. I'm thinking that would maybe be fun to shoot. Just the difference in arrows from aluminum to carbon is unreal....yet there's guys that been shooting woodys and only that! It's become like fly fishing. Enough money and everyone is a "pro" 1000$ and you can shoot 100 yds tomorrow with a compound. Not much skill. I think compounds should have their own season even. Elk in my zone stay 60-100 yds off the road now before only 20!😅😅

The facts as you stated that in traditional archery you can rework the whole bow. You can even learn to build a board bow, make your own strings, change the shelf, the grip, the limbs, etc makes me not even consider trying a compound bow. I just enjoy knowing I can do almost anything to my bows and never have to put one in a shop.

Great video Jeff. I’ve been a compound hunter for over 30 years. Have killed an absolute pile of critters with a compound. My love for shooting really started to fade the past few years. The desire to hunt always gets stronger but shooting was honestly just too easy. Now I’ve been shooting the longbow and hunted with it a good bit last year. Man what a difference. The FUN is back. Great video. I went with a traditional bow over my compound was because of all the trouble I started encountering with the compound. Little things started to get to me. I was taught instinctively with fingers and wanted to get back to the simplicity and enjoyment of shooting a bow. And has it ever. I feel like a kid again and thank my daddy every day I shoot. God rest his soul. But I do have an older compound that I have taken everything off but quiver and rest and shoot it instinctively and fingers. It’s enjoyable as well. Love them trad bows though. Thanks for another great video!
I want to share my story.
My interest in archery began during my military service.
I contacted the local archery club to learn the correct way. After shooting with a borrowed bow in the club for a while, I ordered my first bow after advice. It was a Samick SMT 7.
I never started to compete, but just enjoyed the new hobby.
And I never wanted to get stabilizers to the bow because it's ugly.
Shortly after this, a "new" invention started to be popular: the compound bow. This inspired by the Rambo movies. Suddenly a lot of wilderness stores, who earlier had not sell bows at all, started to sell compound bows. It became a new trend, attracting a number of people who earlier was not interested in archery.
The compound bow became a bit mythic. Traditional bows were more or less considered as toys in comparison, while compound was a real weapon...
It happened in Sweden that an employee killed his boss with a compound bow.
In the news the compound bow was described. It was not just a bow, but a compound...
Of course a traditional bow with same arrow could have been lethal in that situation as well.
I have no bow since a while. But I want to start shooting bow again. And when this comes, I want either a longbow or a hunting recurve.
I am not against technical development. And the compound bow is a high tech development of an ancient weapon. But it is now so technical advanced that it feels like a machine more than a bow. It just misses that you don't need to pull the string yourself.
I am glad I started to shoot bow before I even knew that compound existed. I did not jump on a trend. There are a lot of people who bought a compound and left the interest after a while.
I actually have a good friend who jumped on the trend. I tried his compound, and yes it was cool. It felt like a catapult.
I have heard that some people have got shoulder problems because compounds are often too strong. If you use a compound which demands all your strength to pull it until the let-off, it can be harmful for the shoulders.
I think a traditional bow often is less harmful.
I like your ending of the video. God bless you!

I'm glad that you made this video for two years now I started archery and of course there's so many different styles but the style that I decide to pick was the method you're talking about I like the old school method better The compound bows look pretty cool but in honesty with all those bills and whistles might as well just use a gun honestly like the whole point that I like about archery is back in the day of hunting or just maintaining your skills and to me that's a way better feeling than using a bow and arrow with a trigger release or a site just feels off for me like might as well use a gun better

My recurves have different draw weights and I like to mix it up when target shooting. I have a range at home so I am fortunate I can shoot daily. I also have a ILF takedown (Samick Discovery) with multiple limb sets in different draw weights and a Bearpaw Slick stick hybrid long bow. I am preparing next season to hunt with the compound bow, but shooting with a traditional technique, that is, shooting with the fingers, without a trigger, without scope, without peed, with a traditional arrow rest, etc. I will prepare my arrows for the compound bow the same as a traditional one, that is, the arrow is weighted with a high FOC. Hunting with the compound, but with traditional shooting, is to achieve more speed. As a teacher that you are, what do you think? I would like to know your opinion, please. Thank you so much.

I have a blackwidow graybark I recieved from my father and grandfather when I was about 13. 52lb pull, and it’s been a bow I’ve always relied on. I have shot since I was about 7 years old, I’m 26 now as of this month. I don’t worry about dropping it in the field, I don’t worry the bow at all, because there’s no worry of cams. It’s reliable. My father was taught by my grandfather when he was young, then taught me, and he is the best shooter of a recurve I’ve ever seen. He’ll shoot a cotton ball from 30 yards away. Like he taught me so well that I’ll pick up my blackwidow any day after now shooting for months, and I’ll shoot perfect wherever I aim, without a bit of practice. No worries for my bow to fail. Traditional archery is the way. It’s far more natural, more real, and connected to the act of what archery is.

Isn't it true that there's no reason that you can't equally develop a feel for distance and/or sightless aim with a compound bow? I get that you might be less likely to put in the effort to do so since a compound bow is more likely to come stock with additional tools, but it's not like you can't have a compound bow without them (or simply not always use them) or can't have a recurve bow with sights/reference markers/rangefinders/etc. It's really more about which skills you want to prioritize putting effort into than choice of bow style, no?

I call BS on not needing to now your distance when shooting a traditional bow. Unless your shooting 20 or yards or under. Big difference in a 10 yard hold than 25- 30 yard hold with a traditional bow. That difference puts the arch in archery. Don’t get me wrong you are a great shot and very knowledgeable archer. But we are going to have to agree to disagree on that subject.

    • @davida.4933

Not true for instinctive shooting any more than throwing a rock at something. But the more you get into gap shooting, using the arrow tip consciously for point of aim, or a bow sight, yes then you need to start judging distance. That said, I do think most trad. shooters will do best NOT shooting instinctive. Jeff has said this himself. Instinctive shooting has been way oversold, IMO. The problem for many guys who go this route is that push their limits, esp. in bowhunting. IMO, it's better to be a master of 20 yds. and less. And for whitetails, the most popular game animal for the vast majority of bowhunters, there is no reason to be shooting over 20 yds if you know whitetail hunting. In fact, I would say the ideal range is 15 yds. and less. And this is not a disadvantage, this is where the fun is - predatory distance.

I’ve been 3D shooting for the last few months and have shot with half dozen guys a lot. The group is 5 instinctive shooters, 1 gap and I’m shooting a fixed crawl. The 5 instinctive guys pay ZERO attention to yardage. It’s only the two of us that use tip of arrow to aim that care about yardage. A couple of the instinctive guys can’t even tell you how they shoot they say they just draw and release no thinking. Couple of them say it’s like throwing a baseball you don’t aim you just draw and when it feels right you release. The instinctive guys now seem to shoot wider groups 6-8in over and over, when the gap or aiming guys can get that tighter. However 2 of the guys that are instinctive can shoot easily out to 40-50-60yds consistently without trouble. Not a hunting shot but for 3D they can shoot with some of the compound shooters in hunter divisions. I think the guys that aim are holding tighter groups inside 30yds but I do believe that in a hunting situation that maybe instinctive might be a little better when the adrenaline kicks in and your not having to aim your letting your instincts take over. I’m SO not instinctive so I’m focusing on solid anchor and consistent release.

There is no pin or gap just instinctive practice. Unless being proficient at instinctive traditional archery one can't really understand.

You do realise aluminium (uk spelling here) is workable with wood tools yea? Its common to do so in engineering firms. So you can modify an alloy riser just as easily as hard wood. Ive cut aluminium with a wood saw. Either wood or alloy would need re-finish if you modified it in such a way (grinding/dremel), so its no more work in that sense either. Its simply less familiar.
You can alter poundage and tiller on any compound or ILF recurve.
Night shooting. If anything i have to dim my pins to let my eyes see the target and guess whats within the targets outline. Dimmable sight lights dont rely on you picking up surrounding env in your peripheral, instinctive kinda does. I shoot a lit sight in full black aside a little moonlight. If i can see the targets immediate outline, i can shoot it, and i can gap with my pin. But i dont use a peep with my sights.
Worth noting in the UK we also have compound styles without release aids / sights (NFAS field has two catagories, maybe more). Most likely such things occur globally. Not unusual to see Oneida compounds shot sightless and with finger release here, that said its not unusual to see fat men anchoring in thin air, so maybe the observastion is moot.
Sights for higher accuracy, no sight for more challenge. Shorter bows and wheels for speed. Wood if you like slippers, pipes or cigars. Or just cut the sh*t and buy one of every type like your inner self wants. Simples.
Not trying to be a prick, just adding my austistic ass take on minor points. Night hunting can only really be done in the UK on private ground, as a simulation or as illegal poaching - so no rules on electronics per say, ive shot into the early hours with a sight. At clubs i shoot field unsighted/sighted recurve & oly recurve, i cant exactly call myself an instinctive bowhunter or a compound shooter, im open to being corrected on the night shooting. Respect the principle of all you are saying tho, im a fu*cker for niche reasoning & obscure points.

When a hunter in the Amazon goes to a Shaman because he has not killed game. The Shaman does not look at the forest, or the game, he looks at the hunter. To quote Kathrin Austin-Fitz: "God does not Bless a Mess." Guys sort your gear out and practice. Are you a hunter, or are you just a bloke who shoots at deer?
