“This time is just for Ree” Such a befitting song. Aretha was in the midst of a marriage, her father was in a coma, and she was trying to revive her career. Sure enough, it was a steady climb from this point on. Rest in sweet peace, Queen.
I like Aretha's version but I love Diana Ross's version, Diana's version gives me a feeling that I can take a chance on life and not worry about anything, Diana's version is very encouraging....🙂.
@@Kelly-just-kelly Ms. Ross don't have to try to hit those notes it's her Original song, she sang the song first and did a great job with her own style..

Ewwww WEE! One of my favorite deep cuts of Ree- even better having never seen this! “If liiiiiving for myself, is what I’m guilty of… GOOOOO ONNNNN aaaand sentence meeee!” 🔥🔥🔥
Today, I heard both versions for the first time ever. Beautifully written song. But…ummm…as long as I’m alive, I’ll never utter the words, “I prefer Diana Ross version” of anything over Aretha Franklin. I get the appeal, but absolutely tf not!
Lovely performance and she looks beautiful and regal but Patti's version is my favorite, there is so much power and emotion, you really feel like she has lived what she is singing.
So true! It's funny how the studio album of the song, "My Turn," in 1981, the same year this Johnny Carson show aired, her vocals were clearer, higher and sharper! Yet, the 1981 live performance of this video, her voice is huskier! Many believe and I agree, that the voice is the hardest instrument to play and control. Some call it the most temperamental musical instrument to play because it can become negatively impacted due to MANY reasons, at a moment's notice! Later, after Aretha gave up smoking, her voice became clearer and higher and began to reach notes that many, including myself, thought, were not to be heard from her again! The Grammy's version of Nessun Dorma and her recording of "In The Morning," are two of many examples! She would have never been able to reach the notes in these performances had she continued to smoke!
I've been a Diana Ross fan from childhood. But I never liked that song. Hated it! I thought it was over the top - too Broadway. Until now!! Aretha put that soul in it. Queen of Soul forever!!!
This viewer loves the idea of having Ms. Aretha Franklin & World Class Jazz & Pop Vocalist Ms. Angelina Jordan - Have them do a duet to the Classic's... Once Upon A Time in Music Humanity.!!! - We Thank UUU - Everyone- DD. -.
Never thought I'd say this, but I actually prefer Diana's version. I love the simplicity and that she honors the melody. As much as I love Aretha, she's my all time favorite singer and the voice I want to hear on my deathbed, this slowed down, heavy version just doesn't work for me until the end when it becomes like a gospel sermon with her and the girls in the background going back and forth. That was fire! Along with the walking away and turning back to look.
I think its a matter of perspectives...at least Aretha was able to transmit a feeling for me which is something great for a singer plus Arethas perfect diction and vocal riff and runs add a professional complement to the song. im sorry i have to say i prefer this one, i mean you can feel it its an honest performer!
I think Diana Ross' verson is more intimate. It's like Diana Ross is talking to someone specific, where as Ms. Frankin is more like a declaration to all.
@@debbieechols1478 i see what you are saying but Dianas voice has so much range and potencial. I just feel her voice was not exploited in full in this one
Diana Ross has the best version, being original. Patti Labelle is my favorite for singing contest version. Aretha's version is too slow ( arrangement).
Thank God the television crew did not ask her to stand still and sing that song. I think that her feminine moves add to the lyrics just as it did with Diana. Don't you?
I don't believe that it has anything to do with your belief that "Ross songs are hard to cover," at all. It only becomes hard to cover another artist's song, if one is trying to imitate every nuance of the original song! I believe your issue has everything to do with, as you stated, "not my cup of tea." I think you enjoy and prefer Diana Ross' songs and/or singing style over Aretha Franklin's. It's anyone's right to like or dislike whatever they like or dislike! One person's junk is another person's treasure! And that should be accepted and respected!
@@MPardo-cx6jj I don't think you know what I "enjoy and prefer" just as you're not believing that my belief is that "Ross songs are hard to cover". You sound passive aggressive and like a bully. HUH???!!! Why am I not in a position to know what you enjoy and prefer, WHEN YOU STATED IT YOURSELF!!??? You said Aretha's "It's My Turn," "WAS NOT YOUR CUP OF TEA!!!???" Read your own words! And what point is there to make by saying if I'm an Aretha or Diana fan? That was not important because it wasn't my point! What if I like both? My point was and is, that there is nothing "hard" about covering Diana's or anyone's songs! All one has to do, professional singer or not, is to open one's mouth and sing the song! if people like it, beautiful! If they don't, beautiful! Nothing more, nothing less! I just love both Aretha's and Diana's approach to this song.
Patti sung it best when she sung it to honor Diana.
To be honest i like more Diana version of this song

Aretha looked so very regal. Just like the QUEEN she was and always will be. Not a better voice. EVER.
Back when the performers could sing the whole song and not an abbreviated version!
Lol @ abbreviated version
They could do it now... if it's on a streaming platform and they don't have to worry about time limitations.
Love Miss Ree, but Miss Ross owns this - she ‘gets” this tune.
Aretha take to the church and Diana makes me feel empowered like a can do anything. Love both

Aretha respected Diana!!!.....she often covered her songs !!@
And vice versa. Diana Ross was nominated for a Grammy for her version of "Call Me".
The new huskiness in Aretha's voice is very apparent in this performance, even on the high notes.
Ladies and gents...it don't get much better than that !
A big hit single from Diana Ross. Went to #9 on Billboard Hot 100. 1980
