This "radio edit" can't touch the majesty of the uncut version from the album. The slow burn of the original 7:30 masterpiece is just amazing. Whenever I hear the shortened version, I just hear all the places where the song was cut.
This song has so much meaning to me and I'm so glad they reacted to it... There's a live version of it that is so freaking good ❤ Hopefully they'll get a chance to see that one soon.
“ melancholy royalty” What an incredible way to characterize this sound! 30 years ago, my wife told me she wanted an upgrade and took off with our two daughters. Disintegration became the soundtrack of my life at that time and Pictures of You was heart rending. But Amber, I healed and just celebrated 30 years reunited and married to my high school sweetheart. Now, after 5 shots of Makers Mark, I feel like we are kin. His bless you and Jay and Rob Squad. You guys are great and I love you. - just a 60s kid
I've said this before...the 80's was the best time for music. There was a huge shift away from being constricted by genre. It really felt like the doors were flung open to any artist that was talented to succeed. The Cure were "goth gods," but at the same time, they crossed over to rock and pop audiences. It was truly amazing how music of all genres shot to the top of the charts because they were good. It also explains the huge list of "one hit wonders". Almost any song could just blow up overnight.
Late 80's were the best.... Smiths, Cure, Depeche Mode, Violent Femmes, Trent Resnor (NIN he became), New Order, Smashing Pumpkins, Suicidal Tendancies and so many others.... So glad I grew up in Chicago back then and saw so many of these bands before they became Famous....
I love the Cure, no one can make you feel your feelings like Robert does. The sadness in his voice, the way he does little squeals. It's funny that he's been with the same woman since he was 14 and doesn't even know heartbreak.
I'm 54 and had a chance to see them four times at different stages of their career in 1987, 94, 2006 and last year. The one constant thing that has6changed is Robert Smith's voice. Plus, he his very articulate and can debate anyone on any given subject. He his one of my favorite artist and a very underrated musician as well.
Yeah I don't like it when they just lump them in with 'goth' because there is so much more to them than that. Disintegration has no one consistent genre imo. But every song is brilliant in a completely different way. The cure are a genre.
I love The Cure so much, I have seen them so many times over the years glad you all enjoy them. Bob and his wife Mary must celebrated their 36th anniversary yesterday. Try dear prudence by Siouxsie and he Banshee this is the period of time he was in that band as well.
You can read The Cure's lyrics like sheer poetry. There are very few songwriters of this calibre. I've been looking so long at these pictures of you That I almost believe that they're real I've been living so long with my pictures of you That I almost believe that the pictures are all I can feel Remembering you standing quiet in the rain As I ran to your heart to be near And we kissed as the sky fell in, holding you close How I always held close in your fear Remembering you running soft through the night You were bigger and brighter and wider than snow You screamed at the make-believe, screamed at the sky And you finally found all your courage to let it all go Remembering you, fallen into my arms Crying for the death of your heart You were stone white, so delicate Lost in the cold You were always so lost in the dark Remembering you, how you used to be Slow drowned, you were angels So much more than everything Hold for the last time then slip away quietly Open my eyes, but I never see anything If only I'd thought of the right words I could have held on to your heart If only I'd thought of the right words I wouldn't be breaking apart all my pictures of you Looking so long at these pictures of you But I never hold on to your heart Looking so long for the words to be true But always just breaking apart My pictures of you There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more Than to feel you deep in my heart There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more Than to never feel the breaking apart My pictures of you
The Cure were considered originally what was called Dark Wave, eventually becoming their own genre. You need to check Fascination Street, the video and the look that inspired Edward Scissorhands', and some early The Cure, like Primary, a treat for a bass lover.
There was no such as goth either. In fact there wasn't in the 80s either. To me it seems much more of retrospective type labelled genre. I lived all through the 70s and 80s and I don't remember 'goth' being applied to the cure and siouxsie and the banshees anything like as much as it is now. In fact I don't 'genre' being such a big deal either. The whole 'genre' thing is something that has been picked up in colleges and universities as a nice neat way of putting music and bands in little boxes. To me at the time the cure were just different. I've liked them since very early but was never goth of a black nails type. I never felt the need to ape any particular bands image in order to appreciate them. But these days everything needs a label attached to it. I'm really bored by the whole thing in general. All I ever hear is music I either like or don't like.
saw them 2016 in Dallas. nearly a 3 hour show. 4 encores. 1 microphone on stage. Only for Robert Smith. This was a JR high band for me that I grew up with. At 49, I think they are still greatness.
I did too! Once in Dallas and again in KC! Scored front row in KC between Robert & Simon!! I wish I could post pictures on here. I got some amazing ones!!
I also grew up listening to them since 1983 when I was 13. Eventually they came to South Africa in 2019 and I went to go see them with my best friend and my daughter. Was a surreal evening.
If everyone is honest - including this rufty-tufty biker - there is a corner of their heart that shall forever be either 'Pictures of You' or 'Just Like Heaven' by The Cure. In the Illustrated Dictionary of the Universe there is a picture of The Cure next to the 'Perfect Jangly Indie Guitars' notation.
As Robert Smith always says at the end of a song (in concerts), Thank You! I know this isn't Jay's top choice of music, but you should hear "Fascination Street" from this same album!! Kinda funky, kinda rocks!
One of my all-time favorite bands. We saw them about a year ago at MSG and at the end of the concert Robert Smith came out to thank the Cure's fans. With the lights on (signaling the end of the concert) nobody left and we gave him a 10-minute standing ovation for his contributions to music and to our lives. He was embarrassed to leave. Such a nice guy. [Listen to A Forest next. Find the early years live version to be blown away.]
Great Gothic rock, post punk, new wave, alt rock band. Dreamy guitars and vocals, moody, melancholy (happy/sorrow) music. The alternative, punk, goth crowd loved them during the '80s and '90s. Echo and the Bunnymen is like them and Siouxsee and the Banshees.
Forget what everyone reacts too with the Cure. You have to allow yourself the joy of hearing Caterpillar Girl, In Between Days, PlainSong, A Thousand Hours, Love Cats. Just a few incredible Cure songs to consider. Great reaction!
You pretty much nailed it. They're alternative/post punk/new wave/goth/rock/pop/etc. I absolutely love them. I have seen them. 12 or 13 times and I will keep doing so as long as they're still playing. Amazing band.
Random movie suggestion, I think you guys should check out “Sing Street”! It’s an Irish film about teenagers in the 80s starting a band and every original song in the film is based on a different band’s style. One of them is very like The cure, another one is Bowiesque, ets. It’s all about the power of music to help us transcend difficult circumstances. I think you two would love it!
I have to admit that I didn't really get The Cure's appeal in the '80s, but I've learned to appreciate their music. Robert Smith's voice is very expressive.
@robsquadreactions More catchy fun Cure tunes to try: Why Can't I Be You?, Hot Hot Hot, Primary, Lovecats I searched the ones you reviewed so far are good but are only touching certain style of their range and many years making music . :)
Came out of the post-punk, new wave era, with a gothic touch. Their more poppy songs are fun: Boys Don't Cry, Friday I'm In Love, Just Like Heaven, LoveCats...
Disintegration is their best album to me. Wish is up there too. I've got their Trilogy DVD which features the entire album live along with Pornography and Bloodflowers.
Oh my God, this song that first love from my high school that I will never forget. Haven’t seen or talked to him in so many years, but this song will always remind me of him.
The Cure was in the starter pack for the beginner goth back in the 80s. Along with hair gel, thick mascara, black finger nail polish and all black clothing but seeing them live was amazing. We didn't sit down the entire concert and we sang every song with them. It was incredible.
When I was a kid and heard The Cure for the first time, it was when this album came out. I was so put off by their image, I didn't even listen to the music. It wasn't until many years later that I actually listened. I was a fool. It's great music!
Please give this people more 80s New Wave and R&B. It's been awhile since you've reacted to Siouxsie and the Banshees...Happy House, Hong Kong Garden, Dear Prudence, Peekaboo, Christine, etc.
The Cure are a paradox, as they can create such beautiful sad songs, but then go in the other direction and create such happy, whimsical and euphoric songs: "High" "Mint Car" "The Lovecats" "Why Can't I Be You?" "The 13th" "Friday I'm in Love" "Close to Me" "The Caterpillar" "Doing the Unstuck"
The snowball fight at the end is classic Cure. They were always labeled this doomy goth band or so-called "Mope-rock" by critics desperate to label everything, but they always had a great sense of playfulness and humor in their music. They also had a massive romantic element as evidenced by this song (and many others). They are one of the few bands that emerged from the 80's but the music has never sounded dated or tied to any one era. The songs are still as fresh as they ever were.
Absolutely brilliant. I am swaying on the dance floor at the club "Cabbage Town" in Halifax 1985 in my zone. What fun and free memories. So glad they finally got into the hall of fame. Trend setting geniuses. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
If you look at the comments on the original music video, it's so many expressions of love for people lost to suicide. This is a love song, he never intended it to be a requiem, but his voice is so beautifully expressive, when he says "If only I'd thought of the right words I could have held to your heart" and how the object of this song was "always so lost in the dark" we can't help but think of our dear friends. Looking so long at our pictures indeed. This song is so beautiful, it connects us to our loved ones lost in a way that is painful but loving, sweet and profound. Truly a blessing.
A song where you can get lost in the sauce for sure The album this is from, disintegration, is a top 20 album of all time for sure. And Robert Smith is a guitar God
Gorgeous song, one of my favs. Seen The Cure a good few times now, last time was at Glastonbury, these guys showing the younger, newer bands how a live set is done.
The Tim Pope-directed video was shot using three Super-8 cameras in Ballachulish, Scotland, during the February 1990 "week of the big snow", with Robert Smith mentioning that he had never been colder before.
If you ever search for the official video of this song in The Cure's channel, make sure to read the comments. It includes (it's still there, I just checked) one of the most beautiful testimonies I've ever seen on how special and magic music can be in one's life.
Yes I agree. I got In Orange it in maybe my top five favorite live video concerts up there with Funkadelic Live in Houston 1976, Talking Heads Live In Rome 1980 and The Kelly Family Live at Loreli 1995.
Robert Smith may well have been melancholy royalty but he had a sense of humour too. "The Lovecats" was written as a bit of a joke but became their first Uk top 10 hit. It"s ridiculously catchy and not many songs have a double bass as the main riff. You will be singing it all day long even if the purists scoff!
I love Cure, but my favorite albums are "17 seconds", "Faith" and "Pornography". Do check "Forest", "Cold", "Drowning Man" and "Charlotte Sometimes" among others.
Their songs are so beautifully crafted....., they take you on such rich, luscious, delicious emotional journeys, going on 40+ years of listening to them now and not a day goes by without them...Only matched by the Cocteau Twins IMHO
One of my all time favorite bands! This song in particular was one of the songs I deeply connected with back in the day. It's still a great song today.
Robert Smith doesn't just write music. He writes poetry that is accompanied by instruments. Every song is a beautiful poem that will dive deep into your heart if you just listen to the words. He's one in a million.
There is nothing quite like listening to The Cure at the end of a busy working week, with a bottle of good red wine and some close friends and/or family. Sooth away all the stresses of life!
The Cure are awesome, but you owe it to yourself to check out Echo and the Bunnymen: Bring on the Dancing Horses, A Promise, Lips Like Sugar...Amazing!
The Cure is a huge part of the soundtrack of my life. This just took me back to high school and hearing it everyday on my drive home. You guys are like a quick trip back in time for me. ❤
I’ve been waiting SO long for you to listen to this. One of my favorite songs of theirs. Disintegration album is such an experience to listen to from beginning to end.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Another song from the same era with a great message is Paul Young's "Love Of The Common People". I think it's actually a cover but his version is really good.
Love the Cure. Have owned most of their studio recordings. Another band I love, which as far as I can tell you have never reacted to, is XTC. They are such a diverse and gifted band. Some songs to consider: Making Plans For Nigel / Generals And Majors / Senses Working Overtime / The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead / Dear God.
The entire album Disintegration is phenomenal from beginning to end. One of my top 3 albums of all time.
Agreed.
Also agreed
Also also agreed.
Yes! ❤
Absolutely!
This "radio edit" can't touch the majesty of the uncut version from the album. The slow burn of the original 7:30 masterpiece is just amazing. Whenever I hear the shortened version, I just hear all the places where the song was cut.
I love the extended dance version! It puts a whole new spin on the song!
Same here, just doesn’t sound right to me.
YES !!! That long intro is like foreplay !! The song loses a lot without it 😊
Live is better
Was just coming here to say this. The super-long instrumental intro, a Cure staple, on this one is amazing.
Truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written. By far my favourite Cure song. Smith wrote it as a love song for his wife.
Totally agree! #lottalove
The intro tingles my soul every time
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This song has so much meaning to me and I'm so glad they reacted to it... There's a live version of it that is so freaking good ❤ Hopefully they'll get a chance to see that one soon.
@@marymiller4494 The best live version IMO is the one from the video, The Cure, Play Out
Every Cure song is one of my favorite Cure songs. That said, this is one of my favorite Cure songs.
😂 Brilliant! I agree with the content of your witticism.
No matter how many upvotes it gets, this is an underappreciated comment. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
LOL, good one!
You sound sick. I think you need a Cure.
@David - Even a song like the (in _my_ opinion) awful 'Give Me It'? 😅
“ melancholy royalty” What an incredible way to characterize this sound! 30 years ago, my wife told me she wanted an upgrade and took off with our two daughters. You called it. Robert's vocals and the sound of that magical guitar riff is exquisite.
There's just an ACHE in Robert's voice that pierces the heart.
Lot of goth rock has that airy dreamy guitar sound. The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Siouxsee and the Banshees, etc .
"Disintegration" is one of the greatest albums ever made.
Amen
It's ear candy, and genius writing from the first to the last note.
What about Warrant "Cherry Pie" ???
a masterpiece from start to finish
!!! Evereverevergreen

Very well put. We all listened to a bit of everything, didn’t we? I thank the 80s for my love of many many different genres.
@@lovinlorne Exactly this.
So true and perfectly said…..we sure had us a time didn’t we……

The 80's were amazing, early 90's pretty good. Everything went to shit in the 00's and after
That's my favorite Cure song that I have suggested 1000 times.
Wrong , A Forest is their best.
Absolutely! Years later it’s still my favorite… followed closely by A Letter to Elise. 🖤
It’s my fav too
Thank you for keep requesting! 😊😊

I love the Cure, no one can make you feel your feelings like Robert does. The sadness in his voice, the way he does little squeals. It's funny that he's been with the same woman since he was 14 and doesn't even know heartbreak.
A Forest , is one of my favorite
Absolutely one of their best
I'm 54 and had a chance to see them four times at different stages of their career in 1987, 94, 2006 and last year. The one constant thing that has6changed is Robert Smith's voice. The Cure sond like The Cure. They are in their own category. If you get a chance to catch an interview with Smith, please watch it. I've seen them live just once in Chile and I really love it. One of my favorite bands ever.
Yeah I don't like it when they just lump them in with 'goth' because there is so much more to them than that. Disintegration has no one consistent genre imo. But every song is brilliant in a completely different way. The cure are a genre.
What is so beautiful about Robert Smith is that at 65 he still has the heart of that 16 yo boy who started a band
I love The Cure so much, I have seen them so many times over the years glad you all enjoy them. Bob and his wife Mary must celebrated their 36th anniversary yesterday. Try dear prudence by Siouxsie and he Banshee this is the period of time he was in that band as well.
that and kiss them for me
Not only are they celebrating their anniversary, but they have been together since he was 15 I believe.
You can read The Cure's lyrics like sheer poetry. There are very few songwriters of this calibre.
I've been looking so long at these pictures of you
That I almost believe that they're real
I've been living so long with my pictures of you
That I almost believe that the pictures are all I can feel
Remembering you standing quiet in the rain
As I ran to your heart to be near
And we kissed as the sky fell in, holding you close
How I always held close in your fear
Remembering you running soft through the night
You were bigger and brighter and wider than snow
You screamed at the make-believe, screamed at the sky
And you finally found all your courage to let it all go
Remembering you, fallen into my arms
Crying for the death of your heart
You were stone white, so delicate
Lost in the cold
You were always so lost in the dark
Remembering you, how you used to be
Slow drowned, you were angels
So much more than everything
Hold for the last time then slip away quietly
Open my eyes, but I never see anything
If only I'd thought of the right words
I could have held on to your heart
If only I'd thought of the right words
I wouldn't be breaking apart all my pictures of you
Looking so long at these pictures of you
But I never hold on to your heart
Looking so long for the words to be true
But always just breaking apart
My pictures of you
There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more
Than to feel you deep in my heart
There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more
Than to never feel the breaking apart
My pictures of you
The layering of sound by The Cure is such a perfect backdrop for Robert Smith’s gentle lyrics and sweet voice. Truly one-of-a-kind band
Letter to Elise..in the same vein. So crushingly sad and beautiful.
It is one of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. I wish that more people knew about that song!
The Cure were considered originally what was called Dark Wave, eventually becoming their own genre. You need to check Fascination Street, the video and the look that inspired Edward Scissorhands', and some early The Cure, like Primary, a treat for a bass lover.
There was no such things as Dark Wave when they came out in 1979.
Yeah imo fascination street is their best and most often overlooked song.

Signature Cure classic! One of their best, in my opinion.
Edit: "Close to Me" would be my next recommendation.
Close to Me. Go with audio version (no captions). The video is a bit distracting, like they usually are. They'll like the horn work.
What about fascination street. It's gotta be up there as well. Among the 49 singles they've released
@@Darrenski yeah, that's a really good one too!
One of my fav Cure songs. And Jay soaking it up with his eyes closed, perfect way to listen to this song.

Yesssss the Fascination Street bassline is NASTY
This is one of the BEST Cure songs -- also, Robert Smith is also an excellent guitar player, and if you ever get the chance to see them live, DO IT!!
Such a unique & beautiful band, saw them in concert last year & they’re still amazing!
This song was a reality to me back in 1990. I can't go any further, but God bless you both.

To me Robert Smith is one of the most epic romantic lyricist of the 80's and 90's era..plus his voice is so special, sweet, unique and "heartfelt'..
'So much more than everything' is a naive but brilliant lyric. It just says it all in a completely honest unpretentious way.

They are one of the few bands that emerged from the 80's but the music has never sounded dated or tied to any one era. The songs are still as fresh as they ever were.
Love the Cure .. was an absolute favourite of mine in the 80s, and still today .❤🎉
Disintegration is a great album that has this great song.
Absolutely brilliant. I am swaying on the dance floor at the club "Cabbage Town" in Halifax 1985 in my zone. What fun and free memories. So glad they finally got into the hall of fame. Trend setting geniuses. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
I’ve seen the Cure 3 times. I love Robert Smith & this song is excellent. And again…haunting
A song where you can get lost in the sauce for sure
The album this is from, disintegration, is a top 20 album of all time for sure. And Robert Smith is a guitar God
Defiantly on my top 20 list of greatest of all time.
Gorgeous song, one of my favs. Seen The Cure a good few times now, last time was at Glastonbury, these guys showing the younger, newer bands how a live set is done.
It is great to see how open your minds for so many different styles of Music are!
Not a big Cure fan but The Cure In Orange is one of the most amazing live performances I've seen.
Yes I agree. I got In Orange it in maybe my top five favorite live video concerts up there with Funkadelic Live in Houston 1976, Talking Heads Live In Rome 1980 and The Kelly Family Live at Loreli 1995.
New wave, post-punk goth 💜
My favorite all time love song!
The Cure was a band I absolutely overlooked and underappreciated back in the 80s. Now, they're in my rotation.
Their songs are so beautifully crafted....., they take you on such rich, luscious, delicious emotional journeys, going on 40+ years of listening to them now and not a day goes by without them...Only matched by the Cocteau Twins IMHO
Boys dont cry, is my favorite Cure song.
One of my all time favorite bands! This song in particular was one of the songs I deeply connected with back in the day. It's still a great song today.
One of my favorite Cure songs
My ultimate favorite band. I love that you’re experiencing them. Try A Forest next
The little yelp near the end is my favorite part of one of my favorite songs ever.
Robert Smith doesn't just write music. He writes poetry that is accompanied by instruments. Every song is a beautiful poem that will dive deep into your heart if you just listen to the words. He's one in a million.
My absolute favorite song by the Cure…❤️
SAME FEELS HONEY ❤🇭🇺
There is nothing quite like listening to The Cure at the end of a busy working week, with a bottle of good red wine and some close friends and/or family. Sooth away all the stresses of life!
Good choice Goth rock is what I called it. Sisters of Mercy and Simple minds. Landscape, alphaville. So many great bands
"Melancholy Royalty" WELL SAID
I’ve been waiting SO long for you to listen to this. One of my favorite songs of theirs. Disintegration album is such an experience to listen to from beginning to end.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
THE FIXX - "" Red Skies 1982 HQ "" 🔥 Rock/New Wave/Synth Pop Classics 🎸🎹 The BASS intro is Fantastic and a FIRE! Song overall highly recommend it 🔥
Waterboys ....this is the sea ...greatest song of all time !!
This song brings us to a strange place… somewhere between pleasure and pain. So beautiful. His voice is stellar.
Loved it. Definitely gotta do some early Cure though
Always enjoy your channel - another great song!!
Another song from the same era with a great message is Paul Young's "Love Of The Common People". I think it's actually a cover but his version is really good.
I LOVE The Cure. You should do Just Like Heaven if you haven’t already
Much of the post-punk/new wave British music had such a mysterious almost hopeful melancholic spirit…not depressed or fully nihilistic…
teh cure are an amazing live band....
this is one of my ♥ absolute fav´s track of them
Amber! You have such a sensitive soul for music. Brava, dear! I love hearing you speak on these songs.
