    The thing about Sick is that it has "those moments," ie. the drum fill by Pau and the falsetto by Dany, that listeners will say, "That's the best part," or "Listen to this," and have everybody focus on a specific part of the song while the chorus is worming its way into our brains. Plus, the video is kick-as and unique. What you said about repetitive listening is something I hadn't thought about but I think it's very important for their audience reach.

    • @AriKoinuma
      @AriKoinuma  8 месяцев назад +4

      Yes those small variations and twists add a lot to making the song feel rich and mature, one that you want to listen to many times and still notice new things about them. It's a best practice if you want to record songs that stand up to repeated listens.

    That was a fascinating breakdown of the song parts.. Dany has made the comment quite recently that "Bends are your friend," ironically she was specifically talking about the solo of their earliest single XXI Century Blood. It is really full of bends. and the same is true for the solo to Queen of the Murder Scene. However what you are talking about occurs right in your face in the signature riff, so it hits a lot more powerfully that a bend buried in a solo. Thanks for looking at these different songs.

    • @AriKoinuma
      @AriKoinuma  8 месяцев назад +2

      Bends are one of the “guitaristic” technique and used all the time in solos but less so in riffs. I think the latter should be explored more.

    Good analysis. You had a written comment early (3:31) in the video about them being "eloquent in their native tongue" while they were singing in English. They are Mexican and their native language is Spanish. They are eloquent in both Spanish (two songs) and English (48 songs) and fluently bilingual during their interviews and behind the scenes and vlogs. You should check out Queen of the Murder Scene album in which they did a lot of key changes.

    • @donrichards271

      Exactly. I am a Japanese/English bilingual, but have been in US for decades now. Still it's not easy being so eloquent in a language that is not your native one. The Warning's first language is Spanish but I find their English excellent, amazing even as lyricist.

    Nice assessment of their songwriting skills, I agree with most of what you say but it should be pointed out that their classical training from a very early age plus their exposure to rock music by their parents made an enormous difference; their knowledge of music and theory is way beyond their years early on and it has just blossomed. The other thing is that unlike so many other rock bands their music never gets boring because there are no feelings of sameness about any of their songs.
    Their music has evolved from being really good (especially considering their age) to world class!

    Thanks for laying this out so nicely. A couple other techniques I have found I really enjoy in their songwriting
    - The ease at which they pass back and forth between full-time and half-time. It is pretty seamless, but gets you moving. They have a number of chorus parts that are in half-time, which I find unusual.
    - Since there are only three of them, they need to do some things to make their sound be so full. I have said for a long time that the vocalizations (the ooos and aahhhs) are often used in place of another player on keyboards or a horn section. Since all of them can sing, their harmonized voices acts like a fourth instrument with them on stage. Really adds to the arrangement and presence.
    - Yes they do use some backing tracks, but they are supplementary rather than mandatory. The band have proven time and time again that they do not need or rely on the backing tracks to make their shows. I have no problem with them using tracks. I know this is a contentious issue with some, but I think that is more about how some artists have come to rely on the tracks to make their sound and performance. That is completely not the case with The Warning. 1) They play all the instruments on their tracks, 2) if the track fails during a performance, they just keep going and still make great music, and 3) the acoustic versions of a number of their songs show that they don't really NEED them to play well and give a great show.
    -They are very effective as a three-piece because Pau and Ale are so locked in as a rhythm section. They both grew up playing jazz, funk, and a variety of other genres in addition to rock, so understand how to establish and keep a groove pocket going. MORE is one of my favorite songs to point this out to people.
    Great analysis. Thanks for taking the time to share with us.

    Disciple does have much more power than the studio version, particularly the Teatro version. There the ''moments'' in the song really stand out. Like, the "two, three, GO!'' And the drum fill at the end of the second chorus. And Pau's little double bounce with Ale's double slide... but the instrumental break, Dani's dirty guitar, her exhortations to the crowd with just Pau's mighty right thigh and Ale's single bass notes, then the lovely dirty guitar before the ''hear my calling'' all add up to the ultimate way to do this song.

    I think they do interesting things to make their sound larger. In the Disciple intro it goes bass, add guitar, add drums and then Pau throws a fill and bass drops down an octave while the guitar uses an octave pedal (Ithink, could be wrong on this). This is much more pronounce on live versions. It also seems that they mix bass and drum lines that are different on each verse. I think the thing that really creates their "Warning" signature sound is the vocals. Dany and Pau layer vocals on top usually harmonizing in thirds or fourths while Ale doubles the main melody an octave below. This is what I am hearing, would love to hear what others are picking up.

    I have no expertise as a song writer, so my comments are strictly from a listeners perspective. I discovered this band nearly six years ago, and have loved their song writing up until the two most recent songs you highlighted. They both have no appeal to me. The band is known for being fluid songwriters, so I am not surprised by the changes. They have moved into a more late 1990s/2000s style, which drove me away from listening to rock music 30 years ago. The good news for me, is that the band will continue their fluid approach so there is plenty of music to look forward to in the future.

    • @AriKoinuma
      @AriKoinuma  8 месяцев назад +3

      That's fair. My perspective is from someone who studies songwriting, but whether a song appeals to someone or not is totally subjective, personal thing. The most well written music will still not appeal to everyone. We songwriters just have to write the best songs we can, the ones we like ourselves, and hope that others like it too.

I do enjoy the song "Sick" but the "animated" video I find distracts my interest in the music. Seems very 90's pop-ish. They are still early in the career so maybe this is just due to their desire to explore their creativity. I am waiting to see their release of "Hell You Call A Dream". I hope they do an entertainment video versus something animated. I love their music and I guess we all have to be patient and wait to see how they come out of this "exploratory" phase.

One the common pitfall that I see from musicians analyzing music is to equal complex with better, for me the question to ask is not CAN they do something, the proper question is SHOULD they do something. A musician being able to play a more complex composition does not mean that they should, as a listener I find that the "less is more" maxim works more often than not, when it comes to music, especially Rock.

    • @AriKoinuma

      I totally agree! A decent musician can easily go down the rabbit hole and have too many layers, too many notes, etc. But on the other hand being too simplistic and repetitive can get tiring, too. Hitting the sweet spot in the middle -- that takes mastery.

    Very good analysis. Something to remember on their song writing that all there music early teachers were Mexican. This has had affect on their interpretation of rock. Mexican music in all its facets tends to focus on the emotion of melody, poetry, and the voice with very limited solo instrument work. It is about a complete song. With this as their foundation and American rock as their target The Warning are giving us some fantastic music. At least until one of them has life catch up to them gets married and group breaks up and then they start their solo careers. Hopefully a several years away.

      That’s a great perspective about the influence of Mexican culture. And I agree about life catching up… I’m aware of 3 other sibling acts (not counting Oasis and Black Crowes!) and all of them stopped eventually. A band is a business and it’s rare to find sibling groups that really want to stay in business together for a lifetime.

    I read elsewhere that DPA studied songwriting in their time at Berklee. An observation, to energize the next section of a song, they often "throw" the song from the last bar of a section to the 1 of the next bar by stopping on the 3 or 4. Ringo did this. I've enjoyed your analysis. Thanks!

    One commonality with TWB is that Dani may sing the first lines or the first verse with no guitar, or minimal guitar, just Ale and Pau. Who does that!!?? TW that's who.

    Don't get me wrong, but to me you seem to be just on the tip of the iceberg with a noticeable focus on Danies guitar ... But there's so much more to explore in their writing and their playing. How they manage key changes how they manage variations how they harmonize over all three voices. Therefore you need to analyze from the beginning to the end. You will see that they never repeat anything in the same way. Each part is always a little different. And you will find each perspective of each instrument taken care of - you can see that all of the three bring in their musical skills in the writing and all of them reached an unbelievable high level on their individual instruments. I'm analysing music for 43 years now, but I haven't ever seen such a phenomenon the villarreal sisters truly are.
    There's a reason why the world reacts to them as it does, why pau has been choosen to be best drummer of the year, why Ale is the youngest receiver of signature instruments of Spector ever and why Danie is gifted with unique guitars by Lzzy Hale and Matt Bellamy themselves. Something extraordinary is going on here and we're blessed to be witness of this...

    While I have an issue with your comment about the later two songs being an "improvement" of the "simpler" error songs, it neglects that some of the most interesting ( and sometimes "simpler" musical devices occurred before Error and Queen of the Murder Scene contained some breath stopping musical ideas. I felt that the "simplification" of error may have been a conscious choice to help reset their music. Well that is my take on it anyway. If I have a favourite TW song it would be "23" from Error which isn't even a rock song, but more a lament. The musical biggie in this song for me is the power of the words into the musical lyric line. Error has , for me, has songs that seem to have a feel of "What can we explore here and hoe far can we take it and still be accessable. It would surprise me not in the least if sooner or later they go beyond accessable just to see what's there. Even the Beatles did that, and I don't think they were as talented as these three.

    • @AriKoinuma
      @AriKoinuma  8 месяцев назад

      That’s fair, I don’t mean to devalue their earlier songs in any ways, though I also stick by my comment that at least among these five songs the latter two seem more mature in terms of songwriting craft perspective. How they strike listeners is a totally separate issue. Sometimes more “mature” stuff goes into less relatable direction, for example.

      @@AriKoinuma I agree the song writing has more pointy ideas musically, but the words in "sick" are a wierd "young teen" angst/ shock/yell retrograde move ( in my opinion). Could be a conscious move to pull back one and advance the other, so the next move to upgrade both would be more noticeable, but maybe I am over-thinking it a bit.

    @arikuinomo ... Just one more thing ... I've watched you review/reaction several times and I really liked it but IMO you are missing the essence of the talent of this band. Yes Dani sometimes corporates simplistic guitar parts in the song but you have to understand that she is covering both lead and rythym guitar AND doing the vocals. You also missed the fact that Ale on the base is covering bass and rythym guitar parts as well. There are very few bassists that can do that. Pau is a force all on her own. I've heard many experts say to be a great band you need a great drummer. I think Pau certainly has that covered. This is a three piece band. How complicated can they get? How complicated should they get? Many great three piece bands through out rock history (Grand Funk Railroad, ZZ Top, Rush, to name a few) have done it this way and have acheived greatness. Sometimes the KISS (not the band but the metod "Keep It Simple Sir") works just as well. They produce great music and it's awesome to listen to. Just my opinion

I would love to hear your critique of their album Queen Of The Murder Scene (2018). It would be very interesting to hear your thoughts on how these young ladies' songwriting was in comparison to what they are doing now! If you have time please do a comparison video, onegaishimasu! I like your analysis. You use terms like "more mature". When it comes to a song I've never used that term to describe why I like one song more than another. I like all three songs you played off "Error" better than "More". I like "Disciple" better than "More" and "S!CK". I guess I like a more "immature" song. That's sorta is a dis my music taste.🤔

      That's fair, and don't mean to diss anybody's taste. There are "immature" songs I enjoy greatly, too. But I guess I'm using that term from the mastery / skill development perspective. The newer songs, IMHO, convey they are growing as writers / artists. Does one like the newer songs better? That's a totally separate question.
