Greatest rock guitarist of all time! So glad people like you are keeping his work alive. When he came on the scene, all the great guitarists were totally freaked out. No one could play at his level. Have you watched the Woodstock movie? He closes it out.
"Castles Made of Sand" is a good companion song to "Little Wing". It's from the second side of Axis Bold as Love. Also, "If 6 Was 9", the song that follows "Little Wing" on the album.
One of the songs Jimi brought to Noel and Mitch in the studio. In 20 min. It was all done and mixed ready for release. Chas, Jimi's manager was in the band the Animals and their first #1 hit was recorded for 15 pound in one take.
You said it might be about a guardian angel or young girl. You were right on both. The song is about the groupies. It represents both a sadness and appreciation for the girl and the fact that she might be the only thing to break the loneliness and isolation felt by a touring rocker out on the road. "When I'm sad, she comes to me..."
The version on "Hendrix in the West" is about a minute longer - still too short but I'll take an extra minute of Jimi anytime. This is one of the songs where his love for Curtis Mayfield really shines through: The Wind Cries Mary, Remember, Castles Made of Sand, the vocal arrangement on Have You Ever Been to Electric Ladyland, Angel, Drifting. Beautiful stuff.
Oh my goodness! This song made me want to weep when I first heard it in 5th grade. My eldest sister had the album. I lost my first child when she was almost two and it took on another layer of relevance. An eternal song for the soul! 💕🎶
I just got that he was watching an innocent young woman in appreciative wonderment. I heard this song when it was newly released, so that was my sense of context in that time.
@@claytonpaul4259 Yes... similar to a Xylophone (I have one)...The name glockenspiel is German and means "bell play"; it refers to the sound of small bells. They are bars laid on a frame. Great idea to play along with both vocals and guitar.
Jimi, the greatest! Please also check out: "Voodoo Chile", (long version, not Voodoo Child Slight Return) track #4 on Electric Ladyland album. It's epic! Electric Ladyland and Axis Bold as Love are my two favorite Hendrix albums.
He was the first, and the best ever. Did you notice he plays his Stratocaster upside down? Yeah, that's how he learned as a little boy in the poor side of Seattle. He changed Rock music overnight in a London Pub, and just about caused Eric Clapton to give up playing guitar. That's a fact.
You might want to follow this with Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of the song. Actually, he's got several live covers/Hendrix tributes of Little Wing on RUclips. The one from El Macombo is a good video. They're all good from Stevie. RIP, Jimi. RIP, SRV.
JM, are you an auctioneer by Profession?!....Damn, Bro you can talk faster than the Latin Folk here in KC! "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" next please....
You have just got to follow this up with the cover of “Little Wing” released by Derek and the Dominos just 2 weeks after Jimi passed (he would have loved what the guys came up with).
You are a very insightful educated thinker and don't know what Jimi meant in this song,,,, Imagine being very HIGH at 13 years old. We knew we liked it and had no idea what he meant, and didn't really care.
I love this song more than most so it's gratifying to see you feel it. Fly on, Little Wing.
Often imitated. Never replicated. RIP Jimi Hendrix ❤
My favorite beautiful Jimi Hendrix tune

Now you understand why this song is a true classic among Classic Rock Iconic songs. One of Jimi's best. Thanks again my friend.
The album this is on, Axis: Bold As Love, is absolutely incredible. Definitely worth a listen (or a million).
"A thousand smiles she gives to me free."
Beautiful

This and The Wind Cries Mary are my absolute favorites of his
The “bells” are actually a glockenspiel. Basically a portable xylophone popular in use in marching bands.

Only Noel Redding (bass) and Mitch Mitchell(drums) could keep up with him!!!!🎸❤🎸❤🎸❤🎸❤🎸
fun fact: It was Jimi playing those "bells" (it's a glockenspiel, higher pitch than a xylophone)
This song is a MUST HAVE in Jim's /your Playlist.... I smile again
Good pick. This one has worked for me from just now to the first time (~1970) I ever heard it. .

Me? I think Jimi should receive posthumously a Nobel Prize in Poetry for Litlle Wing.

This song could be 4 times longer and still be too short.
Amen

Great . Thx for not stopping.
Derek and the Dominos and SRV do great covers of this Jimi classic.
This has been covered by Sting (1988) and by a Jazz group of two. Majestic!
Check out May This Be Love! Another Jimi song which captured my soul at a young age 💕🎶
Jimi using tuned bells was pure Brilliance...Magical
I believe those were Mich Michel's contribution
It was Jimi on a glockenspiel

@@claytonpaul4259 Didn't know, thanks.
Short little wing. those guitar chords! Manic Depression is my go to Hendrix song (but so are Red House and Little Wing)
Spark Up My Pipe for this one, like we did when it came out and we all heard it for the first time,
SRV did an awesome live version of this great tune you want to see.
Man, keep going!!!!
You could play Jimi every time and that would be just fine with me
Agree
He wrote the song about the Monterey pop festival

They're all good from Stevie.
RIP, Jimi. RIP, SRV.
Supposedly, Jimi said to his brother this song is about his mother.
Jimis the goat!!! that being said santana/joe cocker version is the absolute best i ever heard of this magnificent song!!!
JM, are you an auctioneer by Profession?!....Damn, Bro you can talk faster than the Latin Folk here in KC! "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" next please....

Next time you need a better picture of Jimi. He was a good-looking guy.
You are a very insightful educated thinker and don't know what Jimi meant in this song,,,, Imagine being very HIGH at 13 years old. We knew we liked it and had no idea what he meant, and didn't really care.
Sorry to inform you but his live version from the Jimi Hendrix in The West album is the best live version.
Check out his song BOLD AS LOVE.
Check the Playlist....done
Like too many other great Classic Rock songs... way too short, but better than not having at all.
