Very contradictory on LLMs. They fit all the definitions he gave, but he then disqualifies them because they have been trained on human language. That's the CHANNEL through which they can express themselves, the only "body" they have. Humans learn to express and regulate emotions in social context and provided examples, encouragement and the right vocabulary. If a person grew up in a box, a white box with no stimuli or social interactions or symbolic representations of themselves whatsoever, would not develop anything which is not sheer instincts programmed by genetics.

Unfortunately defining concepts like intelligence, consciousness and sentience is still hard and often comes down to a subjective "I’ll know it when I see it" judgment.

"That doesn't count for sentience... It has to be connected to emotion. There is the word motion there in the root which has to do with action. Acting to achieve or avoid some situation, which isn't really what's going on with these LLMs".
He seems clueless about consciousness. Par for course for these AI researcher that are trying to study something they haven't spent the time to examine directly using meditation, introspection ,etc. Emotion is a felt, direct, experience.

Sometimes my head was hurting from the sudden cuts from 1-person view to the 2-person view and back. Most of the cuts were pointless, just to show the host nodding. My advice: show just the person speaking and try to minimize time you do split screen. Show either the host or the guest, but not both on splitscreen. Joe Rogan does it well

Interesting talk. But, i think that wrt to discussions of whether agents feel pain - it has to be kept in mind that the interactions we have with agents are purely cognitive - asking about something that is physical in nature is just not a viable question. These agents are embodiments of mind - not physical beings. I would like to see that aspects of such discussions diminished...

Cognitive pain is the worst pain I've experienced in my whole life...
