It was a prototype made by a friend. He developed back problems from his standing wheel which was the standard of the day. Probably one of the first electric Japanese style wheels in the US.
These are decorative pieces not intended for use with food. Who would eat out of a $1-2,000 bowl? Dad has his hands in these oxides for over 60 years and lived to be 101.
Ceramics are made of the earth. The decoration of ceramics is also from the earth. Thats the way it was meant to be and the way it has been for thousands of years. There are artists who try to use materials that are less toxic and the result is sub-par at best. I will say that if sealed with a food safe glaze it is safe to eat off. If it is not sealed with a food safe glaze, as long as it is fired to an appropriate temperature then it is safe to handle and use for decoration. They are only toxic if used improperly. I'm pretty sure he knows exactly what he is doing. ;) His work is absolutely beautiful.
He had extraordinary control and an exacting eye...wonderful work!
