  • In this video I do a no build truck camping set-up for upcoming winter camping adventures. Everything I use is removable and fairly compact. Although I live full-time in a 21 ft travel trailer, I wanted a set-up to get into more remote locations when desired.

    Get a pool noodle to convert your trash can into a more comfy toilet so it doesn’t pinch your backside. Pool noodle takes up almost no space. I got some string LED lights that connect to a USB. I can connect it to my jackery power bank but I feel it’s more convenient using the smaller power banks to connect it snd just recharge the power banks on the jackery. You are smart to have a cot like that. The storage under the bed is invaluable. Remember not to put your wool blanket on top of your down sleeping bag cuz you will undo the insulating benefits of the loft of the down. But if you use it inside your sleeping bag as a sort of liner, you will be toasty. I think you have a great set up there. I look forward to your adventures in your truck bed camper as well. 😊

      I want to know the brand of the airmatterss that slips inside the cot so that it does not move on you at night. Thanks. I bought the cot and love it!

      I like the pool noodle idea. I personally use the dedicated Homer bucket with liners and moon seat! I MUST keep in the pickup shell for all traveling! I have NO large intestine, (therefore no solid stool) so when Mommy Nature calls, I have maybe 2 minutes to respond. Thank goodness for the heavily tinted windows on the shell!

    A great item I utilize is a sheepskin throw made from 4 sheepskins sewn together. Costco has them, and other places.
    And in Winter the sheepskin, hair side towards you, allows for body heat to be trapped, and the loft of the hair allows for moisture to escape with some body heat so you don't get too hot, and sleep comfortable. Sort of like a buffalo hide and the way Native Americans utilized those.

    Thats about the same set up I ran with for years in my Tacoma. Just some remembrances: A regular underbed plastic roller bin fits under the Roll-a-Cot for great storage. I also used a couple of stackable storage bins for all my gear and personal effects. It kept it all together for storage and one makes a nice end table. I mounted a plastic cutting board to the tailgate with sheet metal screws - makes a flat surface and great for food prep. I got quick drying microfiber towels and sewed velcro "pads" along one edge and glued the other side above the windows...get a dark color...and you have easy to use towels AND drapes...and when up they dry quick. Safe and fun travels...and your right...the bed rug is heaven on your knees.

    Glad to see you are finally set up in the back of your truck. It will be a great option for adventuring. There are free standing tents that are made to wrap around the back end of your SUV or truck such that you can slide out of your truck into a free standing full height tent to stand up and get dressed or whatever. Or in the case of long term inclement weather, a space that is not so confining. The end that connects to your truck can be closed up when you are not connected. It could also be a camp saver if you want to drive off and come back to the same camp site. And don't forget, you can add a roof basket to your truck cap or cab if you need or want to bring more gear with you.

    Awesome idea. Keep it simple. Don't fill up the back of that truck with junk that will get in your way. Cook the way you do when back packing. I would trade in the camp stove for a Camplux single burner. Much less space. I love mine. Buy the fuel canisters by the case. Finally.... Curtains... Happy new year Cat.

    Wow! I have the blue mesh rollacot from camptime, the same carpet kit, a folding table from one tigress, a Camco porta potty which fits under the cot, solar charger with portable solar panels, small 12 volt fridge/freezer combo, folding milk crates from Costco which fit under the cot, led lanterns, buddy heater, zero degree down bag and small cookstove. My camper shell is a hightop sitting on a 2015 Chevy Duramax crew cab 2500. It's silver. I also have a helinox type chair. I set this up so I could use my truck as a truck when needed. Everything is light and portable. Great minds think alike. I also pull a 25' travel trailer in the summer. I like to take short trips in the winter and leave the trailer at home. I also carry a couple of tarps. One I can toss over my sleeping bag incase the camper shell drips condensation on my sleeping bag.

    Happy New Year. I use the interlocking puzzle mats for tent camping. You can custom cut to fit any space. They are cheap and lightweight. If need be, you could buy a bunch to add another layer to go under or over your new rug. You could place over your new rug to keep the dirt off and protect it or buy a few to place on the tail gate for a cushion. Best of luck in 2023!

    You'll love it!! I turned my van into a no build camper van last year. Although I have a ClassC motorhome, the van has become invaluable. Nearly everything I've used in it, I already had.
    I did buy a collapsable trunk organizer, which I keep some clothes in. And I learned to carry a cloth bag to put dirty laundry in because I threw some away when I was using the same bags that I also use for garbage. Oops.
    Good ideas on the pet food container.
    Happy camping!! 🏕

    In my past experience I found that to comfortably sleep in the truck bed, the walls of the bed needed to be insulated. There are numerous options, even the spray in type. Go out there and try it out without the insulation and see what you think. Have fun and be safe.

    I have one tip re: climbing in and out of the back of the truck bed. Ive found that doing so kills my knees. I like the puzzle piece floor tiles from Harbor Freight for the bed and I purchased a longish kitchen sponge floor mat to roll onto the tailgate. It is a total knee saver and, now, I absolutely won’t go without it. The pet food container for food is an excellent idea, especially use of such for a toilet. I have a short bed truck 5ft, so that limits use of my truck for camping, but Im trying to figure out how to do it. It would be so fun to take impromptu overnights more easily, when hooking up and pulling out with the trailer is more cumbersome. Im super excited to see your truck camping adventures begin!!

  • @mrjeff2396
    @mrjeff2396 6 месяцев назад +2

    Inspirational! For trash can, I use a dedicated Homer bucket with the 5gal screw on/off bucket lid. Some 550 cord with a weight attached, tossed up and over a branch at least 10 feet above and tied off to a differing anchor point. The buckets also work great for food storage, keeping out of reach of hungry critters that may be around! FYI: You can also obtain free 3.5 or 5 gal buckets with lids from your local grocery store bakery section! Get several, you can always Clorox clean and rinse and use them to store potable water! Blankets, moving blankets from Harbor Freight are cheap, if nothing else they make great cushions. Insulation: Homers or Lowe’s have the thin lightweight aluminum insulation that is easily cut to shape for your windows and shell roof, held in place via Velcro strips, cost cheap! Also a piece of the aluminum under your sleeping bag may help with warmth!

    • @GRJones-ug3qx
      @GRJones-ug3qx 6 месяцев назад

      I use the aluminum insulation, too. I spray painted the outfacing sides of the cut panels to match my camper shell. Inside the shiny aluminum reflects even a tiny bit of light to brighten the room. I hot glued little flat steel lugs around the windows and use magnet with hooks on them to hold the insulation in place. I use the hooks for stringing lights and other light duty. They're easily removed.

A simple conversion is perfect and plenty for occasional use .. the screw off jug might also work with the bucket toilet lids sold at Walmart as a Lug-a-ble Lou .... can probably find a short legged side table for the space left ,, or maybe a storage tote with a flat top to use for a work surface ... will be great fun to have this to get to some off road camps and trailheads .... This is very useful, a good solution to the problem of insulation when camping in a truck bed. The fact that it is all removable in minutes makes this set-up attractive for a weekend trip in a truck that needs to be a truck sometimes. I think your going to be happy with your downsizing experiment. Giving up a little luxury for more freedom looks like what your doing. The rodents get into your vehicle by climbing up on the tires, four good mouse traps positioned around the tires have eliminated my rodent problem, of course you only have to use them when your where there are mice. Letting things evolve as you go is a smart way to go otherwise you will end up with stuff that you don't really need. Happy New Year.

    Very nice setup with that cot, Catherine! Bet you migrate to a smaller heater, though -- for two reasons. It's a much smaller space than the camper, and except for real emergencies you'll probably spend less time in there than you plan. I'm working on a small alcohol heater with a stainless steel mesh mantle to fit in a conical windscreen/reflector for use in an SUV camping setup. I'm hoping it will deliver just enough heat without too much water vapor -- we'll see. Happy trails!

    Great simple set up! I camp the exact same way. if I can throw a suggestion your way… The metal C clamps that are holding your camper shell down to your truck bed you will want to put some type of foam and some tape around those four clamps because it is guaranteed that a knee, ankle, definitely an elbow is going to hit those at some point during your trip sleeping or crawling around in there. I learned the hard way. Cheers and happy camping.

    Happy New Year! I did the same type of setup in my 05 Chevy. Love that setup. Wish I had known about that cot. Good idea for extra insulation. I picked up a section of leftover carpet from a home store that fit almost perfectly. Used some marine carpet adhesive to attach to the ceiling. (Took the shell off and put on the grass upside down to make life easier)

    Happy New Year
    Really like having Birdie in the video
    I did same thing with my truck topper
    But as mentioned I also installed top or bottom those foam anti fatigue mats. Makes for happy knees
    Also adding a small step stool to get in/out.
    I did add a dual USSB receptacle to charge phone and have a LED small light
    Easy to tap into tail lift wiring
    Beautiful area in UT
    Loved seeing the wood pile as an a woodcarver
    Travel easy and enjoy

      Bed rug works great. I love mine. I would also suggest limo tent on your cap windows to keep prying eyes away.

    I took a road trip once in my Chevrolet S 10 truck with a camper topper for several months through every western state. I attempted to do a build just as you, but I had less space little experience. I made the trip just fine but jettison some gear along the way like an air mattress, you will enjoy having the truck for your off-road experiences.
