Gotta say that fisherdwarf was a real mvp of the first year. Seems like he managed to save every patient with no medical experience whatsoever

@@petemagnuson7357 ooh, or Redbeard/bloodbeard. Seems properly dwarfy.
Not bad for someone with less medical training than Dr. Nick from The Simpsons.
Woah that woodcutter being raised as an intelligent zombie rather than a normal zombie opens up a whole lot of possibilities, because normal zombies are opposed to all life. Makes a necromancer fort way more interesting.
Isn't that friggin wacky? Never could have expected that bringing dwarves back from the dead (in a useful manner) would be a thing in fort mode. A game changed for sure!
@@kruggsmash
I'm pretty sure Intelligent Undead get magic powers, when raised. I wonder if our woodcutter got any neat powers?
I'm waited for someone to die because he goes into a fell mood.
There's a story in this video (ruclips.net/video/FIzZ0C0V0hk/видео.html) about a zombie fisherman that I really enjoyed. It seems intelligent zombies can be really interesting.
Oh man I would love to have a mod that made me able to have a necromancer fort in a world similar to Kugsmash’s. Or even get the region folder of the world and play in his world. That would be so awesome!!
Kruggsmash: I'm worried about necromancers
Necromancers: Nah fam we cool
@Leather Jacket What?
This necromancer is going to be.. an interesting element of this fortress.
weirdest thing here, dude. I only realized while drawing the pics and made no mention of it in the video- this guy has no beard. He is a male dwarf with no beard that I can see. What the hell is this?
@@kruggsmash He's gone bald due to age and necromancy, maybe?
@@kruggsmash what came first the necromancer or the no beard? Was he cast out leading to learning necromancer or did the necromancer lead him to be cast out then stopped wearing a beared
I'm both excited and worried about the intelligent undead. I haven't done Fortress Mode enough to encounter one yet, but in Adventure Mode... They are kind of... Oof. They don't seem well implented (which I'm hoping is just Adventure Mode being wonky) and their loyalties and what/who they are hostile to is just a huge mess, I would guess because they have a bunch of conflicting details/data for being still a member of their civ with all their history and personality and family/relationships, while also being a (presumably life-hating?) undead creature, and DON'T FORGET-- They ALL have one random supernatural ability. Thank god Moldath's brand of intelligent undead aren't the kind that just immediately turn invisible (uuuuuuuugh).
The ones I've seen start attacking eachother, sometimes necromancer NPCs even, and otherwise were standing around shouting at zombies to Identify Themselves!! so, really they do not seem like they work at the moment. But dang it if they aren't cool and I hope they are more of a storytelling boon than a burden.
@@kruggsmash So he's just.... a bastard?
“These dwarfs are here for the express purpose of building a fortress” and thus the downward spiral begins.
It's not going to go well, lol
Sounds like Elf talk. A Dawrf's glory is theirs to judge and none others. May their most glorious days outshine their greatest failures.
So long as the fortress isn't:
- being attacked by bloodthirsty elephants

- covered in vomit

Coming back here after finishing the two sequels. Seeing Moldath's innocuous entry, and the start of so many characters who would go on to becoming legends, is very nostalgic, in spite of only starting it a month ago. Krugg and crew weave a truly epic tale. Glory to Moldath, Ted, Orid Ashii, and Kruggsmash!
Honestly one of my favorite series glad to see someone else likes it
Definitely hits different, knowing how it all ends up.
I'm shocked no one jumped on him being a Dyer right away. Thank goodness he felt the need to preach about the art of Dyeing for the sake of our chuckles.
The beards on the beetles have already made this my favourite setting so far. And you've barely begun. How exciting.
Setae! Yeah, a lot of beetles have a sort of fur on them. Cranked it up a bit for the hell of it.
Dwarf mounts deserve majestic beards too
They look perfect. And the way you've depicted them at 14:52, all plumped up and nested on their eggs like broody hens, is just wonderful.
And so the Legend begins....
And hopefully it doesn't end with a fart sound next episode, lol
Hondystoker was a vampire fort. I guess this will be a necromancer haven.

Grazing egglayers will stay on their eggs until the eggs hatch, and will starve themselves if the eggs don't hatch soon enough. The only other Egg laying Grazer, the Elk Bird, will do the same thing.
The key to getting them to survive is to get them to get off their eggs to graze momentarily. One of the solutions is to put them on a pasture that does not include the nest boxes. If eggs are laid, they will return to the next box eventually before the eggs ruin if there is access to them.
One of my D&D campaigns visited a dwarf city called "The Scorched Fountain" as a bit of a Easter egg.

ah, my favorite kruggsmash playlist to keep me company late night programming :)
22:10 "Come on, you have to take it easy. Now lay down next to this monster in a tiny room. Rest is important for healing!"
It is not the mass media, nor the government officials, nor even the WHO or CDC (disappointingly) that is keeping morale and hope up during these troubled times. No, it's rather the independent content creators, such as yourself, that is helping us all get through this.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
The boogy-dwarf ending screen returns! I very much like what you've done, I find the costumes of this fort's dwarves to be quite pleasantlooking, and the Hornbeetles look great! You know me, I like my boars, but this is a fine beast indeed. Certainly looking forward to next episode, and as a blacksmith, I love the idea of the three landmarks being named the Smith, the Forge, and the Anvil. Thank you for another vid!
I think the boogeydwarf is going to be a fixture for the future, for now anyways. I might try making more of those animations at some point though. Songs too. I could really do a bunch with it. Oh those darn Honeystoker boars. I really wish those bastards pulled their weight a little better! These beetles though, *slaps a beetle* , these beetles are gunna be good I think.
I think that is partly because DF's boars are relatively small and timid. Giant variety, though... Anyway, it's such a shame :( I love those bristly buggers! In my testing in the arena, common boars are much weaker than beakdogs (but stronger than dogs), but giant boars were much stronger. Hoo boy those are a beasties after my heart. I was thinking of modding one somewhere inbetween, as a "racial beastly companion" roughly equivalent to the beakdog, with some niche to them. Much like your hornbeetles! That said, I saw a very interesting take in Masterwork Mod, where there was a reaction to make armour and sharpened tusk-caps for the mod's dwarven pigs, essentially combining a creature and a set of barding into a different creature equivalent to the former pig, but with a thin layer of [metal of choice] material on it's skin and tusks, making for it being much tougher, but also able to penetrate armour themselves! Lastly, I had a silly idea of giving pigs the ability to till soil on dabbling level. Oli, my pet pig, gave me the idea, when she rooted around and overturned the earth last year, and I used that to plant some potatoes in the yard. :D Anyways, have a nice day, lad. :) Sorry for being rambly

That new necromancy sure is an interesting useful aspect. The half-a-brain damned one for some reason was the most interesting part of the story here to me along with the horn beetles. I can see why he has a sack over his head, though I'd still recommend getting a helmet for him, less disturbing that way for the other dwarves and it'll protect what's left of his other brain half.

youve changed the game dude
like not only did you prove that roguelikes and colony games are lp fodder du-jour
but that there are elements we have lost from our days trying to make walls of text, surrounding screenshots of walls of text feel like a story. a world
back then we would add art, fanart, thread interactivity, and any trick at all to get stay bumped from death on our 30 hour +files for a given game
back before the light got switched on in the room and we had a shape of the beast, let's plays were always pushing new boundaries, and when videos were scarce we pulled out all of the stops
this reminds me of that work ethic, but with great jams, expertly paced narration and laborious amounts of one off artwork, simulating a thread's worth of future "memers"
while also being frontloaded to allow us to take it in all at once passively
i'd say it is the natural progression of the genre, but that would imply that your work effort or ability is common
so i'll simply say it's the level best
here's to another mishap fort, you are seriously onto some next level stuff with your multimedia, skill hours, work hours
Haven’t watched the full video yet but that intro deserves a like on its own
Thanks, buddy! Glad you liked it :)
Love ya, Kruggsmash! You always make my day better with your labors of love! I've been playing around with the world gen parameters recently. It's... interesting! For the curious, I troubleshooted how to make large forests so the elves wouldn't go extinct (increase rainfall and temperature, and if you use the mesh sizes then choose 4x4 or larger); How to make a Japan-like island chain (still unsuccessful, something to do with elevation X/Y gradations maybe); and how to have a bunch of tiny mountain ranges spread out across a landmass (3 mountain peaks, elevation mesh size 4x4: exclude the second lowest elevation and the second highest, turn up erosion cycle to 1000). And my favorite: reducing pre- and post- river placement by at least half. The pre-river placement determins the number of major rivers, the post-placement determines how many minor rivers / bends in the river there are.
Im really looking forward to this series, will be the first one i catch "live" :D For the glory of Scorchfountain!
About Necromancers in a fortress:
Expectation: Scheming bastard that try to take control over your fortress, revels in violence and mayhem and want to take over the world
Reality: Nicest woman in the fortress, super social, hates authority, control and violence, but gets depressed because she misses her family.
Solution: I wanted to make her a scholar so she writes necromancer books, but she got depression because of loneliness (she hates pondering over stuff) :( So i made her my Tavernkeeper, now she has a lot of friends (even in the elven bard group that lives in my tavern) and is happier than everyone else...
The perfect barkeeper, patient, talkative, never sleeps, 24/7 service :D
It's interesting to think of necromancers as just normal ol' people in a society. In every fantasy setting they are the creepy fella or the outright villain. Hoping to see this guy here come around at some point and be a real integral part of the fort.

Great start to a new series brother. Look forward to evenings spent in your new world. Also the new outro music is funky as!
Hmm, I wonder what motivation the necromancer has.
Each necromancer has their own motivation, ranging from good, or bad.
He came with a migrant group, quite a decent sized one, he didn't fuss about picking berries, or doing basic labour work.
He seems very calm and collected, and even kept fighting a cave troll when he could have easily ran away from the battle, letting the brought back dwarf to handle it, till someone else runs into it.
Same as he returned a dwarf with intelligence, well with how much he can have judging by the wound to his head.
Maybe this necromancer, wants to use his power for good deeds, to help, and protect. I believe he will be very useful in this series, can't wait and see.
This is a great episode! I can't wait to see what the future holds for Scorchfountain. I don't have any questions but a small suggestion for the tileset - some people make a square/pillar wall tile on the 255th space (which is unused by the game) and set it as pillar tile in d_init file.
Necromancers are LOT more dangerous now, as enemies. I embarked near a tower that's at war with my civilization, and by summer I was greeted with "The dead walk!" Summer on my FIRST year... one season to prepare. And the zombies weren't normal either, they were fully equipped with metal weapons and armor. There were a couple normal corpses, but also a few "fallen one" zombies, who were using crossbows, and the melee fighters were using shields too. Apparently these necromancers don't mess around when it comes to war.
I barely survived, considering I had no walls up and had just barely made some weapons, and only because I embarked with some ores and coal. I mean, I knew invaders would be coming soon-ish, but one season? And after that, it took them TWO YEARS to come again.
My reasoning for that is that their leader (a fox woman necromancer) saw to crush my fortress early, then backed off when the dwarves weren't easy to take down.
Oh, and I looked into the leader's history a bit... she is indeed a wild fox woman that became civilized. Then she became a necromancer, then after a few years she killed the tower's leader and took his position. Seems like she's a plotting villain in this world, and able to make quite a variety of intelligent zombies and experiments.
This is so cool! I’m really curious to see how being a damned one affects dwarves psychologically.
Who's to say! I figured having his head caved in would have screwed up his psyche a bit but I guess not!
Gosh darn it Krugg, your reasonable number of ads on your videos is why I watch and rewatch your content without an ad blocker. 💕
I love the big horn beetle they are my friends.
I love how I can listen to this like a podcast while I paint my miniatures. I don't even need to watch the video as the details alone help give me an image and make painting even more enjoyable. Thank you Kruggsmash!
just started this video and all I can say is the name "scorchfountain" reminds me of another fortress you did. will it be fun with magma or one dwarf's power trip? maybe both?
*nods slowly, intensely.*
So how many dwarves and children will be thrown to the volcano god this time? Will the Elves be bathed in lava?
Oh god, that is actually a good idea. A Lava waterfall trap. Ahahahaha!
Actually, one of the things I kinda wish Krugg would do less of is the power trip. Every fort has it that I've seen - except when the king up and gets murdered after being set up for it. Admittedly, I haven't watched them all and frankly, my opinion is a drop in a sea compared to his own. I just hope this fort continues for a while and ends up being retired instead of wiped out.
Dang, this is all so well made. Even just the subtle way you scan about the screen/zoom in to highlight details makes SO much difference in how easy it is to follow the things you're talking about, not to mention the drawings and how you link together the reams of information within your narrative. Oh, and there's the music and sound effects, too. Bloody hell.
one of my favourite traps when I have a volcano on my map is to have the entrance go over the crater. Then have a shooting gallery near there so you can have marksdwarfs shoot them full of arrows so they dodge off the ramp and fall to the heated depths. ;)
Mr. Kruggsmash - hats off to you sir, with a beardly bow.
Good to see you coming back to a full series story. I love these. I am so excited.
Great Scandinavian/ Celtic looking iron age series plate! That is bad ass.
When your so early the video is still titled Scorchfountain Ep.1
Nah, tha's it
@@kruggsmash Oh damn, guess your right.
Just started plowing my way through this series, I have to be in the right mood for dwarf fortress. I love the necromancer already it was always one of my favourite things in Adventure Mode to become a necromancer and just wander the wilds to amass a small collection woodland creature corpses and then seige a town. It was also always fun when some stinky Kobolds ambushed the sleeping traveller and 40 zombies leapt up and slaughtered them
Awesome work on this video! I absolutely love the animated bits and the new text boxes. It looks very nice and fits well with the aesthetic ^^ Keep up the good work! Looking forward to more of this series. It'll be interesting to see how you utilize the volcano! :3
I love seeing your art get more and more dynamic. How much you love doing this and the amount of effort and time you're spending on this really shows.
Anyone rewatching these before the year is out?
A new video AND a whole new interesting series?! Sign me up!
This may be the best fortress video I've seen from you so far! The storytelling was on-point, characterization was amazing and the nicknames were appropriately given out.
Can't wait to see more!
Thank you for more wonderful content!
Thank *you* for watching, y'bastard!
This video felt something new. Like a complete rework for a game that makes it amazing. This all just felt like a complete upgrade to everything you've done before. The music, art, and just the consistency of the presentation with the art is just amazing. Your own commentary feels new. To me, this all feels so new, fresh, and improved. Definitely very excited for more.
I'm Really happy to see the begining of another series ^^
The new macanics about necromancer seems interesting... much more benevolant than before, for sure ^^
I hope this volcano will serve interestingly, and I'm eager to see what king of fortress this will be this time.
Thanks for the video :)
Krugg you're always on point with immersion. Even near the end when you casually commented about bloodthrone only being in layer 3, I love these little slips that don't break the "reality" of the story but also subtly teach viewers things about the game itself.
You're the Dorf expert here and you do very well at translating the apparent nothingness on screen into a believable story and full world. Bless you Krugg
Krugg: "I don't think I'm a good storyteller, honestly"
Also Krugg:
Looking forward to another amazing story!
Kruggs always amazes me again and again. Every time I think he can’t improve anymore he always one-ups himself...
love it love it love it!
Heh, I'm still halfway through Honeystoker after having recently found your ☼Channel☼, so I won't be watching this for a while. I still want to extend a greeting, and, as always: *"Your videomanship is of the highest quality!"*
Coming back to this after the steam release to get inspired once more. A fantastic series worth revisiting
Finally! Thankyouthankyouthankyou!
Took ages, huh?
Thanks for watching, buddy :)
In terms of production and aesthetic, this is some of your best work. The attention to detail in the audio and art design
made this a really pleasant experience and I was quite fond of the sketches at the end along with the new, more immersive format. Fantastic work!
Awesome episode. I’m looking forward to the steam release. I know in your Q&A you said you were on the fence, but from a channel growth perspective there will be huge volume of people looking for content on the stream release. You’d be crazy not to tap that!
As someone who uses graphics tilesets, I’ve always found it hard to understand what’s going on. Luckily your narration is so strong I get by!
I probably will, but it won't be so I can grow the channel. If I really cared about that, I wouldn't be making DF videos. Also, yes I am crazy.
LOVE the hornbeetles. I feel like just adding one fictional domesticated work animal that's different than your typical cattle, horse, donkey, etc. can really spice up any fantasy setting. Bonus points if it's a non-mammal and EXTRA EXTRA bonus points if it's an invertebrate like these beetles here.
Huh, having your own court necromancer, that's going to be interesting!
It sure was...
Super excited for this new series!
Naming the different parts of the area was a fantastic idea. Helps a ton understanding the spatial relations of everything happening.
The intro was super cool, although I also like your older pixel and chiptune intros as well.
Watching this after the watchful eyes finale really changes the tone
Oh yes I'm excited! Great start. Yeah I was iffy on the necromancer when he came in too but so far he's been a total bro rezzing one of the dwarves back, and the damned being a functioning member of society to boot! Also realizing that their King is also a damned as well is neat. This df update is super awesome, didn't even think of imagining that fleshing out villains would give us a chance to have zombie citizens!
Also yeah no problems on the horned beetles, in fact I'm glad you added that bit in end explaining that it was in fact a mod. I'm completely fine with mods so long as you tell us! Also Yes please bring back fanart I missed it when you did so back then! Love me seeing fanart that people have made from your previous stories!
Looking forward to this series!
New series? I'm hyped.
Heck yes
The mining section with the rocks really helped bring the dwarves' perspective of their world to life. Those minerals are so important to them, but for players of the game they are abstract. It adds so much not just to the video, but to the entire Dwarf Fortress experience to "see" and hear them explained from the dwarven perspective (much more interesting than looking them up on the wiki).
The porn music for the outro is an interesting choice.
Glad to see the starts of a new long series in the making, I look forward to it becoming as epic as the others or moreso!
porn music? Psh
The what now?
A buddy told me that these videos were boring.
It actually sounds like I'm listening to a real story, this is amazing.
I'd love a the worldgen for this, the embark looks great!
Despite playing DF for many years, those beetles had me questioning if they were modded in. They fit really well with the vanilla game!
Finally get to watch one of these fresh from the forge, really looking forward to it.
Should be a fun ride, eh? Haven't started a new one since late 2018!
This series is hands down one of my favorites pieces of media of all time
"They worship the god of mischievousness and wisdom"
So they basically worship Yoda?
seems like a jade sculpture is in order :D
Seeing that this is the beginning of an epic and as of yet, ongoing, adventure, just want to thank you for putting the time in to make this series. Its a ton of work and really rewarding to watch and follow along. All cheers to you!
