I have to say that this series was put together very well and extremely non biased.
Some of the comments on previous videos claimed that this was a proselytization attempt by Sal but it's very obvious that it's simply educational content based around historical events.
In today's society, its more crucial than ever to educate the people on what Islam is and to discourage blindly following the media.

It is lower than the “taxes” Muslims are to pay (zakat). Also, those taken into servitude where those who went to battle with the Muslims and lost. Furthermore, even those persecutors are given rights such as being able to buy their freedom, marrying who they want, benefitting from their expertise, being leaders, and being taken care of in the home of whichever Muslim they are in. “It was narrated that Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “They are your brothers whom Allaah has put under your authority, so if Allaah has put a person’s brother under his authority, let him feed him from what he eats and clothe him from what he wears, and let him not overburden him with work, and if he does overburden him with work, then let him help him.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (6050).” Anything can be twisted to sound a certain way. Nice work, very unbiased. Islam is a peaceful religion. Those surahs you quoted in regards to killing is clearly in the context of selfdefence against an enemy who is persecuting you and killing you. Even then when the Muslims conquered Makkah finally they did not kill the non muslims like the crusaders did. The only reasons why Islam spread so fast and is spreading today is because if you really follow the teachings you will find happiness and success. Just look at the economic teachings of the Quran, it would solve a lot of problems! Just curious if you are a Muslim yourself or believe in god? Thanks

Greatly appreciate Khan Academy for presenting Islamic traditions and ideas. As we have seen and heard from the other two monotheistic traditions, Judaism and Christianity, there are peaceful and violent interpretation of the holy books. The interpretation of holy scriptures are dependent upon the whims of humans. As humans we all have our own interests, and the teachings of God or Prophets are used to achieve the goals of ordinary human beings. Rightly or wrongly violence, destruction, and oppression have long been the tools of people with authority. Even the scriptures of compassionate religions have been used to justify atrocities in name of God.

The translation that you have done "And kill them wherever you take them" is not actually accurate. As I have searched in the Tafseer of Quran that the word "Waktuluhum" does have literal meaning "And kill them" but it does not depicts this meaning as in the book of Tafseer it is clearly shown that the word "Waktulhum" mean "And Fight Them" and the word "Haisu" means "whenever" and the word "Sakiftumuhum" which means "You Find Them". So this clearly shows that the translation you are using by any english scholar is totally wrong. Islam is not a deen by force, Islam does not promotes 'by force' Islam only promotes your "will" which is the beauty of this Deen. Asslam o Allikum.

Yes Muhammad (PBUH) was a military leader but have you read the Islamic history of how Islam spread to the world. He PBUH faught battles but none was started by muslims all of the battles were faught either started by enemies or faught because of the non muslims who didn't followed the treaties. If you think Islam is spread by force then you are at wrong and even you do not have knowledge about Islam. Alright forstly you have no right to say anything about our Holy Book.. And yes every single word in Quran e Pak is abouslutely 100% correct. It basically depends on the critical thinking or approach of a man to understand it. I am not sure from which religion you are but let's take an example of Hinduaism. Do you know how many gods they worship? And how they have started worshipping them..Men were not allowed to marry the wife of Muhammad (PBUH) because they were associated with the most beloved person and just for a second think the same women would go into the nikkah of some other men and they had a Boy then the same boy would be given soo much importance and their inherent would also be given so much importance and the peoplewho have mind set like hinduism they would have started worshipping that chain just like the system or Peeri Fakeeri running right now. That is why they were not allowed to marry the wifes of Muhammad (PBUH).....Muhammad (PBUH) is the most beloved creature of Allah and you right now is living in this word just because of Him. This world is created just because of our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and He was sent down to deliver the messages of Allah (which is right now in the shape of Quran).

In that verse Allah guided you all the things that HE has and HE will bestow on you not just one thing... @Msvks I am not comparing Islam with any other religion. And how can you use false language or blame anyone by saying that He (PBUH) made up verses as per his convenience.. No one in this world is allowed to say thay even the people of that time some of them might be you ancestors believes that Muhammad (PBUH) is the most honest person. Many people at that time did not followed him religiously but they always followed Him as a nodle, kind and honest person. Have you forgot about the treaties that he have made with jews, have you forgot about the disputes among tribes that He has settled.. We are following Muhammad (PBUH) as a person as a messanger of Allah and every thing he said and written in Quran is the message came directly from Allah and their is no doubt about it...

The verses about killing should be understood only after reading about the context or time during which such verses were revealed. The context and background must be kept in mind while reciting verses from Quran. Only then one can have better understanding. The translation from Arabic to any language some how distort the exact meanings. Also, the literal meaning of any verse of Quran could be different when one goes into the figurative or contextual meaning.

    • @petermarendy9559

So does this mean Muslims don't read the Koran literally?

    • @TheProfyTime
      @TheProfyTime 2 года назад

@@petermarendy9559 its not the same case. We have reward on only reading it in its original language which is arabic. Then we have translation if i am not native arabic speaker. Then if you want to goe into details of every verse we have Tafaseer from the islamic scholars in order to get the background and deep understanding about that specific verse.
Quran had been revealing not as a whole but over the period of 23 years, verse by verse or chapter by chapter.
So we are well aware of the islamic history and context in which the specific verse was revealed. If we did not understand from the translation then we read the Tafaseer.
So if you read a verse and take it literally then you could easily distort the whole context because to get the understanding you must read the whole Chapter or Surah. Its not the ordinary book.
Forexample, a man claims that Namaz (Prayer) is prohibited in Quran. Yes its a one verse but he did not read the whole part which is Do not go for Namaz when your are not in your senses when you are drunken or polluted.
Its the man who would take one part of the Quran and present it before the people without conveying the whole context. How could a non believer understand it without reading it? So they will take the information from such videos as true. We should not be biased on listening to just one man. And its fact that in this era of social media one uses and spreads the information for just views or to make people think what that man or organization wants to

That is why poor non Muslims massively convert so they could pay in zakat.

In Parts 1 & 2 of this series, I was quite impressed by (and thankful for) your objective and informative presentation of the early days of the spread of Islam. However, your dwelling on the admittedly ambiguous terminology of Surah 2:190-193 made you sound a bit like a Muslim apologist, sorry. Please keep in mind that Surah 2 is the just the first of 28 Medinan surahs -- and it is followed by numerous other surahs which are not ambiguous at all when it comes to the non-self-defensive nature of physically violent jihad. I would recommend that you and interested viewers also read Surahs 8, 3, 33, 4, 57, 47, 66, 61, 58 and (last but not least) Surahs 5 and 9. In Surah 33, for example, we find these charming words from Allah to His faithful believers: "And He brought down those who supported them among the People of the Scripture from their fortresses and cast terror into their hearts [so that] a party you killed, and you took captive a party. And He caused you to inherit their land and their homes and their properties and a land which you have not trodden."

Mr. Kahn just explains them from both points of view and because you can not accept a view that opposes yours, you accuse mr. Kahn of propaganda

His explanation of this specific verse is not necessarily an indication or explanation of his stance of Islam itself or his understanding/stance regarding other verses of warfare.
And the charming verse that you quoted was from the specific event of the Jewish tribe Banu Qurayza who broke the treaty with Muslims to kill the Muslims.... And they accepted the judgement of a Muslim from their own tribe(jew who converted to Islam)... Which was death obviously.... What the ignorants fail to realize that Quran was revealed over a period of 23 years so its extremely contextual and not always so general that the ignorants think/unconsciously desires bcoz of their presupposed/biased hatred towards Islam

The one verse you mentioned will easily be justified once you spare 5 minutes of your time into reading the background story of it and why it was revealed. Same goes for every other verse. It is said in Quran that there will be people who take parts of the Quran and leave others and that is very wrong. Islam is a way of life.. A whole picture. You can't take few and leave others that only suits your thoughts. If you want to take things out of context in Quran, then there are verses that goes like: "Woe to the prayers".. While praying is a pillar of the Islamic faith.

That is not true. A King of Kerala travelled by sea to meet the Prophet in those days and become Muslim in his presence. He died in Oman while returning to India. But his people became Muslim because he had chosen to accept Islam as his religion. Some Arabs do feel that Indian Muslims may not have enough knowledge but that is because the Quran is not written in Urdu or Hindi and hence there can be some misunderstandings. Also some Indians Muslims follow wrong practices like praying to dead people which is not considered correct by Muslims from Arabs. So there are some differences but it depends upon country to country and to the extent of the knowledge of both Arabs and Indian Muslims.

Rajesh Kumar I said some preachers, not all of them do not understand the complete Quran and all other related books of traditions and Islamic law. Over the years and based on the influence of culture and interpretations of Quran, some differences in practices have emerged between each country. For example in Triple Talaq, Arab Muslims in Saudi do not believe in instant triple Talaq but there is one incident during the time of the Prophet when a man had divorced the women by verbally saying that he divorced her but wanted to get back to marriage afterwards but he was not allowed. There could be many reasons but some of the today’s scholars in India think that once a man has divorced he should not be allowed reconciliation with his wife but that was once incident most of the other cases reconciliation has always been encouraged between husband and wife. That is why such matters are like the judgements of the SC each case has some special circumstances which must reviewed before deciding it cannot be one size fit all.

I must share my gratitude with you for making such a video with befitting facts for suitable comprehension. However there is one thing and that is a fact"Muslims are not given the power to change even a single word of what was transcended 1400 years back on the Prophet Mohammad(Peace be upon Him) ,as to remove any ambiguity of was and is" Quran is the word of Allah and in Quran ,Allah mentions to safeguard it by HIMSELF.And so we see after this long years it is safe. Yes about translations -it is easy to translate as the language it was originally in,is ARABIC and its pretty much alive and hence one may possibly read Arabic and he would easily find meanings of translation.Unlike Bible which is not safe guarded and was in a language Aramece which divided into Hebrew and the modern Greek. So one reason one is optionless to read the language if even he has the original bible(which by the facts is no more available in original form). To say,the NASB(New American Standard Bible 1960)-the last bible authentic version was released in 1960 and then again in 1995.So yes it do gives a mark difference in the application of knowledge found from these two books or to say few more also from the past era ,and thats why few are catholic and some are protestants and still more the J ews also follow their Torah or HALAKAH and have similar slight modifications in each scripture. Now In this case QURAN is a Holy Book which is unchanged(the first ever and the today's Quran are same in every way-not a single word is modified) since it was first revealed in arabic and the language is also 5th ; the most spoken in the world. And thats why once any person who is in the desire of learning "who is he" and "who is GOD" and "what is happening inside our heart" , get close to this Quran, and yes this does help him more than the other scriptures as it has discussed everything of today's world in its entirety while still being in 14th century - and thats what concluded ; It is a miracle to be unchanged in this world-where everything is infected with time.So we all can use this fact for our comprehension as well.Thankyou

Except that you made a huge mistake that shows you do not understand Christianity.
The Jewish laws in the old testament, are not followed by Christians, because Jesus came to establish a new set of laws. This is important because you are proposing Christians still listen to Jewish laws established before Jesus, which they do not.
The books between Genesis to Songs of Solomon are part of the old testament, mostly composed of Jewish laws predating Jesus.
For Matthew, you are taking it out of context. Also, it's Matthew 10:34 not 10:24. If you read the scriptures right after Matthew 10:34, you'll know that it's referring to people having conflict within their own households/ having chaotic lives if they place others before God. The scripture you nitpicked doesn't mention killing, it mentions that there will be no peace for those who do not follow God.
      It's not the same thing.
      Luke 19:27
      www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+19&version=KJV
In context, it's referring to attackers, that scripture isn't commanding everyone to kill others. It is pertaining to a specific event. Again, you took something out of context.
Do you acknowledge that Christians do not follow Jewish laws, yes or no?
You are religiously illiterate, you nitpicked scriptures that Christians do not follow (The OT established the history of Christianity, and Judaism, along with having many things that overlap into the new testament), or you ignored the event it was referring to. Unlike the quran, Luke 19:27 isn't a command for all Christians, it also isn't written in a way that would imply Christians are to kill others as it is a story from a fight/ war. Read the scriptures before and after that one.

@@themiddleman5886 Matthew 5:17 - “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them." (NIV)
Jesus never advocated for a distinction between the Jews and the Christians. It was later theologians who theorised that the only covenant that gentiles need to make was through Christ, not through commandments given to the Jews. Jesus was a man who wanted to uphold the Torah.
Whether or not Christians /do/ follow Jewish law isn't the issue here - it's the issue of 'why do they ignore what was important to Jesus?'. Luke 2:46-47 - "After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers." (NIV)
He was a man who excelled in rabbinical knowledge and understanding. The OT would have been to him what the gospels are to Christians today, so why don't Christians treat the OT with the same reverence Jesus did, if they aspire to be as holy?

After watching the video, I read the comments suggesting this video is biased.
Here is why people are saying the video is biased. Khan is attempting to show both sides of the argument for Muslim violence. When doing this, the best of both sides should be taken. When presenting the side advocating that the Quran teaches violence though, he took their weakest point, which most people I know would not even use in an argument because of the clear context of the verse. This does a disservice to them. You take the best point of one side, then you take the weakest point of the other and you spend 2 of your 12 minutes refuting that weak point. That's why people think you are biased.
So, I agree, either he is ignorant of the actual argument that people make against the Quran in terms of it's violence (which I doubt), or he is biased attempting to make Islam seem more peaceful than it is.
Let me explain more of what the other side says. The second to last surah to be revealed to Muhammad was Surah 9, At-Taubah. In this Surah, there is justified violence against "polytheists" unless they convert or request protection where you will teach them about Islam. He claims that any treaties made with them can be kept unless they break these treaties, but afterwards they should be killed everywhere they are. Over and over again in Surah 9 he refers to them as unbelievers or polytheists and advocates killing them until they repent, establish prayer, and give zakah (eg. become a Muslim) or in the case that they willingly pay the Jiyza (non-believer tax) and feel subdued. This was a later revelation by Muhammad, surpassing any previous revelations such as the peaceful ones mentioned in the video which applied during the time that Muhammad and his followers were minorities.
He also quotes from Muhammads Farewell Sermon. That quote is meant for Muslims as Muhammad says immediately after "Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood." He also shows that there is superiority between peoples piety even within Islam.
As Allah says in the Quran, those who disbelieve are the worst of creatures (98:6) and those who believe are the best of creatures (98:7).
As for the Dhimmi status you can check Surah 9:29 where it says "Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued."
So you fight them until they pay Jizya and feel subdued. This was the tax for non-believers. Now let's look at the hadiths:
Sahih Muslim, Book 19, Hadith 4294
"If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them."
Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 53, Hadith 386 (Umar talking to the great countries of pagans)
"Our Prophet, the Messenger of our Lord, has ordered us to fight you till you worship Allah Alone or give Jizya (i.e. tribute)"
Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 33 (Umar)
"I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and they establish prayer, and pay Zakat"
Now let's look at the best jihad:
    Sunan Ibn Majah (2794)
It was narrated that ‘Amr bin ‘Abasah said:
“I came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, which Jihad is best?’ He said: ‘(That of a man) whose blood is shed and his horse is wounded.’”
Some will say, wait wait, but other hadiths say the best jihad is just a word spoken to an unjust ruler. Yeah? Which of the hadiths is more authentic? Because the one I quoted is Sahih, and the one they quote is Hasan.
Islam is not that hard to understand guys. If you stop trying to 20th century this religion you can really figure out quickly why Islam was able to expand so fast.
Let's also keep in mind that if you are not Muslim and a Muslim conquers your city and takes away your wife captive, she can become his sexual toy.
Sahih Muslim Book 8 Hadith 3432
At the Battle of Hanain Allah's Messenger (Peace be upon him) sent an army to Autas and encountered the enemy and fought with them. Having overcome them and taken them captives, the Companions of Allah's Messenger (may peace te upon him) seemed to refrain from having intercourse with captive women because of their husbands being polytheists. Then Allah, Most High, sent down regarding that:" And women already married, except those whom your right hands possess (iv. 24)" (i. e. they were lawful for them when their 'Idda period came to an end).
You hear that? Women already married are unlawful. Well, except for slaves (those whom your right hands possess). This is not talking about dead husbands as that has never been up for debate. This is talking about women who are currently married and their husband is alive. It's unlawful, unless you possess them. All the first caliphs and followers of Islam believed and practiced this. Some though thought that if both the husband and wife were slaves together then the marriage counted, however then they simply would separate them and have their way with their wives.
If you become Muslim though... they can't take your wife as a slave. Let me ask how many men would allow some sweaty Arabs on camels who just overthrew your city to come in and take your wife to be his sexual slave unless she gets pregnant in which case he has to marry her as in the case between Muhammad and his slave girl Mariam? I bet not too many. I could imagine quite a few conquered peoples accepting Islam in order to not be 2nd classes citizens and have their wives delivered up as war booty to their Muslim enemies.
Now let's look at it from the other side too. You can be a Christian with a single wife, or a Muslim with 4 wives and as many sex slaves as you want. Not only that but if you go to battle with the armies of Islam you have the opportunity to gain not only wealth from shared winnings but also sexual slaves. Of course this will be appealing to a large majority of men. And your wives cannot complain about you sleeping with your sex slaves, because Allah revealed that in the Quran very clearly that no one should forbid what Allah has allowed.

I went through many comments but in broad picture one has to study complete religion after that he may reach on the conclusion and he can explain clearly about that. I am telling this about all religion. if some body read only a portion with out connection of that portion with other chapters. He/She cannot reach on the conclusion. Therefore, we should respect each other beliefs. If some one want to criticize others religion. He should study complete religion and than he should give his opinion. which will be based on his knowledge. All religions has some links with each other. Specially Jewish , christian and Islamic religion has too many things in common.
