So glad to see someone giving Nile Rogers his due here in RUclips. The only thing that rivals his guitar playing is his producing sensibilities. Duran Duran, Diana Ross, Carly Simon, David Bowie, Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams, Mick Jagger, Christina Aguilera...the list of producing credits is long and deep. I have been his biggest fan for decades, long admiring his synthesis of jazz, soul, and funk applied to a wide and diverse range of musical genres. Thank you for this video.
And Madonna!!
The man is a legend!
Nile's harmony really is what sets him apart. Normally, my brain (and probably most of our brains) go to blues harmony and 9th chords when thinking about funk, but Nile takes that same feel and applies it to classical harmony.
My favorite Nile part is the intro to "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross - the part is so rhythmically complete that the drums can almost act as a melody instrument, which builds a ton of suspense. And harmonically, the progression never fully resolves itself but also never feels too far out. There are lots of good options, but "I'm Coming Out" embodies the things that make Nile great.
My sweet summer child, I _LOVE_ watching your discoveries. It’s like getting to hear the old songs for the first time again ✌️😌
Let’s Dance by Bowie was my first exposure to Nile Rodgers during guitar and sent me down a rabbit hole
LOVE his playing
I got to go see Chic and Duran Duran at Red Rocks, Co. years ago.I went with my wife and youngest son. My son was blown away by Niles Rodger's guitar playing. After the show, I told him about how Nile Rodgers has produced and co-written many hits. Now, like me, he is a huge Niles Rodgers fan. The guy is a living legend.
I have to admit, about 6 months ago I spent a lot of time 'reading' about Niles who was kind of a mystery to me. Why, because I frequently saw his name popping up for his playing, long career, and having made great music with tons of people. Around the same time I heard of Cory Wong. Can't say I'm a huge fan of either, but much respect to both of them. Heck, if you can play guitar you're pretty much assured of getting my respect, some more than others, but all will get it. Come to find out I had been listening to Niles for years as I've been around for quite a while, but I didn't know it was him playing that funk.
Niles Rodgers is without question IMO one great underrated players. If you look at the 70’s in general and the song writing skills that were on display in so many genres it was an amazing time.
Today’s generation of songwriters do not utilize the full range of possibilities that was on display 70’s. If you have the time to explore the different genres it’s overwhelming IMO the talent that was on display.
Listening to somebody unironically explain what radio was is giving me anxiety.
Am I already that old?
If I'm home the radio is on about 80% of the time. I've always been a huge radio listener. If I'm in my car it's on 98% of the time. I have about 6 radios and I use them all. You're talking Baby Boomer here.
Really enjoyed this video, had some stuff I knew but a lot of new stuff too, presented really well, and great humor.
"I want your love" is my favourite Chic song. Thanks for making the video. Younger players should know their roots.
Everybody Dance is one of my all time favorite songs. Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards were the dynamic duo of the late 70's. There album with Le Freak and Good times also classics. Their work on Diana Ross's album Diana (I'm coming out, Upside down) has their signature Chic work on it as well. Check out Sister Sledge and the We are Family Album

Each new video reminds me of why I love ur channel
Im seeing cory wong in october here in glasgow. Its gonna be my first actual gig, and i’m so hyped.
Chic's " Good Times " Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards on Bass and Tony Thompson On drums. OMG!
Benard was a beast on bass.what bass and guitar combo
Great dive into the mastery of Nile! Funk and rhythm player extraordinaire!
That's how I got started on guitar and sometimes I would play guitar watching television. Taught me how to play by ear. Many thanks again for your excellent post. Keep up the great work
ʜɪᴛ ᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴏɴ ᴛᴇʟᴇɢʀᴀᴍ ɪ ɢᴏᴛ sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ sᴘᴇᴄɪᴀʟ ғᴏʀ ʏᴏᴜ 🎉🎸🎸👆...
"Lose Yourself To Dance," which was the second hit by Rodgers, Daft Punk, and Pharell Williams has probably Niles's funkiest groove. But my all time funkiest guitar riff is by Wah Wah Watson on Herbie Hancock's "Hang Up Your Hang Ups." He drives the song using only single note and ghost note rhythmic picking. It's so sublime in its simplicity yet so supremely funky.
Nile Rodgers album "Out loud" was a fun and funky project. Lots of great 80s style funk. It was my first time hearing him and his music. I've been a fan ever since.
Thank you!! Love Niles
Awesome content my friend.... Thx
You know, I was getting a taxi with a few band mates and the driver noticed we were all musicians. He proceeded to tell us all about the time he meet Nile Rogers. Said he was a pretty chill guy (he also showed us proof btw)
Funk is natural. You can't fake the funk. Welcome to the real deal......Nile
I've never heard this name but I've unknowingly heard a LOT of his music! I really like these videos where you look at the technical abilities and creativity of specific artists. Have you looked into country music guitarists at all? I know some have taken a lot of their style from blues players. Keith Urban and Brad Paisley are two that I'd recommend you look at if you haven't already. Thanks again and keep up the awesome work!
Notorious by Duran Duran. That's my favourite Nile track. So funky and like Bootsy says, you can't fake the funk or your nose will grow.
Another cool video Mike. 🙂
I saw him and chic last year and they were phenomenal. Incredible rythm guitar parts.
RESPECT! It would be a literal crime if this man isnt eternally known and reveered... Sugar Hill gang (Rapper's Delight) were sued for taking Nile's riff from "Good Times" by Chic. The first rap sample but stolen. LOL 1977... Love what you do, Mike. Thanks for knowing where we came from and sharing it.
"If you don't know where you've been, then how will you ever know where youre going? " -Mr. Burger, High school history teacher. LOL He shocked my heavy metal ass into thinking for a change. This info matters man. Cheers
I'm just thankful you took a moment to note that when Chic recorded "Everybody Dance", it was early enough that Nile Rodgers didn't have dreadlocks. That is definitely telling.
The rhythm guitar break in Diana Ross's 'I'm coming out' always stood out to me as an extraordinary feat of rhythm playing.
🙏🏾👑🙏🏾🎸 Man I'm Glad I Found Your Channel. I've Became a Instance Subscriber. But What I Was Surprised to hear was That you Didn't know Who Nile Rodger Was. 😊 But Glad You Found Out. He's One of the Best Rhythm Guitarist That a Guitar Player Would Want to Learn From. But I Guess It's an Age Group Thang. 🙂 I've Follow Niles Rodger Every Since Chic, Nile Rodger ane Bernard Edward Was Like The Batman and Robbin Of Putting Down That Perfect Rhythm On a Song. I Love Everything Nile Rodger Had Something to Do With. I Have to Many Favorite's That Niles Made, But Off the Top Is, Get Lucky, Spacer, Lost in Music and Everybody Dance. and The List Can Go On. I Just Have to Say, I Like Your Playing Style Because I've Seen People Who Tried to Play a Nile Rodger's Song and They Don't Even Come Close to The Song. So Thank You For Getting It right. I Also Love Your Video On Hendrix. I Was Going to Get Mad Until I Saw The Video. 😁 How Could He Not LIke Hendrix. 😄😄✌🏾🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🏾👊🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Michael Jackson's Rock with You by Rod Temperton does exactly the same chromatic thing and it makes you want to dance. Nile Rodgers named his guitar ' hit maker' which he bought as a teenager and didn't know that B-Stock meant that his new Fender Strat didn't correspond to specifications. There are interviews where he talks about his guitar and its very special sound. And I really liked hearing your perspective on disco. I wish my kids would call me up and ask me about what it was like when we were all disco dancing and getting down to Chic and all eyes were on Studio 54 for the new thing.
Great video. Keep up the good work. Would love to hear your thoughts on Eddie hazel, Curtis Mayfield and maybe a Peter Green? Favorite Chic song is Good Times
@mikecole That chord that you discovered is very popular in R and B and gospel music. Try it with the A-7#5 for 1 beat,B-7#5 for 1 beat and then C major 7. For gospel turn around. . . 3 4 / 1...
One of my favorite Nile Roger's songs he did with daft punk is loose yourself to dance his groove is so cool on that song
I saw Nile Rogers open for Duran Duran last year. He blew the roof off the place and basically stole the show. I've been a fan ever since.
great vid, thanks
Nile's favorite is Good Times...
BTW fun story about "Everybody Dance":
So right before Nile starts to put Chic together in '77, he bumps into one of his old teachers/mentors, who asks "hey Nile, whatchya up to?"
he says "just earnin' bread on the club circuit playin' crappy pop songs like Sugar, Sugar" (The Archies, '67)
his teacher says "hey, Sugar, Sugar" is a good song"
Nile: "naw it's cheesy doo-wop"
Teacher: "Sugar, Sugar sold a million records. How many did you sell?"
Nile: "huh..."
Two weeks later, he writes "Everybody Dance", doo doo de doo
which is of course the same jingle as "Sugar, Sugar"
& it worked...
Good times is my favorite chic song, the bass line is legendary, the guitar riffed is amazing
You can find the extended 12” mix of dress you up by Madonna on youtube, and Nile’s solo in that song is arguably my favorite ever
He‘s The Greatest Dancer by Sister Sledge sent me down the rabbit hole, Nile Rodger‘s guitar is just dancing on that one complimenting the lyrics😍
You should do a full breakdown on the other guitarist from the Holy Trinities. Jack Stratton would be proud, this was an excellent funk sermon.
Mike, this episode is excellent, really enjoyed the teaching about Nile in a fun way. And what chord was that again????? Thanks!!
Hello hit me up right now 💐✍️✍️you won my flying guitar 🎸🎸
Check out Thinking of you by Sister Sledge , wow is it hard to play to get that feel and accuracy, he is my favourate funk player and a former jazz guitarist and it shows. Bless you bro.
I’ve played on a couple freelance gigs with Cory here in Minneapolis and seen him live tons of times. Never played with or heard a guitarist that is so tied to subdivision and locked into the grid. But where he really shines is on the disc golf course 🥏
ʜɪᴛ ᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴏɴ ᴛᴇʟᴇɢʀᴀᴍ ɪ ɢᴏᴛ sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ sᴘᴇᴄɪᴀʟ ғᴏʀ ʏᴏᴜ 🎉🎸🎸👆
Le freak, by chic...1978, I was 15, whenever that came on at the Walton Hop(ha ha I know) everybody who wasn't dancing danced and everybody who was dancing, danced harder. I will always love that riff
lose yourself to dance on random access memories is equally as funky as get lucky and you can tell on the first chord that its nile rodgers
Dude, I love your enthusiasm. I think you could inspire me to read the dictionary
Cool guy, a true ambassador of hard work and he just likes his guitar.
i think my favourite riff by him is from Sorcerer by Norma Jean Wright (one of chic's lead singers)
You should totally make a video on Cory Wong
Should check out some of the original Mary ford and les paul, history most people over look, plus the birth of shredding in a way
Check out “thinking of you”. It’s a Sister Sledge song he and Bernard Edwards wrote fore them.
If you like Rodgers playing in chic, then listen to the David Bowie album Let's Dance. On that same album, you'll hear the stylings of a guy named Stevie Ray Vaughan. Maybe you've heard of him.
Whoa, that aspect ratio is bringing me back to 2007.
Dude, you’re funny; I love that riff though.
m7#5 chords are amazing. Pretty sure Man on the Side by John Mayer has it in the chord progression and it sounds amazing.
The first riff sounded vaguely like a John Mayer song from one of his early albums. Possibly inspired by Nile Rodgers. Thanks for the tip.
Do a video about Kurt Cobain! Great video by the way!
You should try the prs hdrx 20
Okay now you’re straying into Beato-land 😂. That is a compliment btw.
Get lucky came out in like 2014 there was A LOT more options then the radio 😂. There was RUclips and hella music apps by that point
As a kid I had Freak Out on a 45, I'm old.
Nile is one of the greats. Such a prolific and influential player.
Nile is why I play guitar and I play country.... The Best is the Best.. Lets Dance.. Avant Garde/Pop music that a country guy loves
Yep, you called it at the end. Le Freak is Nile Rodgers 101!
Earl Slick laid down some pretty funky guitar work back in the day. Really complimented Bowie.
Now that you mention it Niles Did some nice work on let's dance.
@@rcc3music Bowie knew how to find some great players.
He played with SRV on let's dance but I guess you'd know that.
Sounds like a song from Heart, Crazy over you, wasn't it?
i loved it when he played guitar on that diana ross song
Cory and Nile - groove machines!
ʜɪᴛ ᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴏɴ ᴛᴇʟᴇɢʀᴀᴍ ɪ ɢᴏᴛ sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ sᴘᴇᴄɪᴀʟ ғᴏʀ ʏᴏᴜ 🎉🎁🎁
Upside down by Diana Ross is a classic! Plus all of Madonna’s Like a Virgin album
And he has used his funk skills on a lot of EDM as well. He has worked with Avicii, Calvin Harris and Sigala for example
ʜɪᴛ ᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴏɴ ᴛᴇʟᴇɢʀᴀᴍ ɪ ɢᴏᴛ sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ sᴘᴇᴄɪᴀʟ ғᴏʀ ʏᴏᴜ 🎉🎸🎸👆
You should have asked your parents in the first place. lol! I adored those early Chic albums.
Want some funky guitar? Check out "Still A Thrill " by Jody Watley. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the guitarist on that track.
Andre Cymone, I presume 🙂 ...
Dude. Cory Wong is one of my favourite guitarists!
10/10
Ross Bolton - the best, tecnnically speaking, funk player I have ever seen or heard of
Grant Green is my fav.
Literally any song by him is recognizable in a chord or a bar at most.
Good times
Before he even revealed who he was talking about, I knew it was Nile. Absolute legend
Bro check out Al Mckay
Corey likes to say he plays "Lead Rhythm Guitar"
Hello hit me up right now 💐✍️✍️you won my flying guitar 🎸🎸
Chic! Took you long enough to get here. Try playing "I wan't your love"
Ahhhh, now we’re on the path to righteousness! 🇺🇸🎸🏆
I need advice on the algorithm
Nile is THE OG GOAT!
Notorious by Duran Duran
Rogers is a legend
ʜɪᴛ ᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴏɴ ᴛᴇʟᴇɢʀᴀᴍ ɪ ɢᴏᴛ sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ sᴘᴇᴄɪᴀʟ ғᴏʀ ʏᴏᴜ 🎉🎁🎁
Howabout the dude with the JB's , changalangalang.
Okey, Chic... * But, why not go deeper; into the groove... [I got that.] The Brothers Johnson: "This had to be", and "Stomp"...
I love the Chic... But: The Brothers Johnson... Back to Chic; they are "Atlantic". That's at the top of sound reproduction. In fact; I'm trying to figure out who's better Sony or them... I like Sony.
Nile is legendary
What is he talking about? That song was released in 2013 when mp3 iPods zunes psp’s where super big and PTP and torrents were at their height I’d say….
Savoir Faire
Niles and Nard - Le Freak, C’est Chic
ruclips.net/video/aXgSHL7efKg/видео.html
We all knew who you were going to talk about
I could have bet you meant Nile Rodgers 😂 He’s the greatest. But Cory is next level 👍🏻
Any Duran Duran fan could tell you how funky Nile Rodgers is. Those dudes (especially bassist John Taylor) were huge Chic fans.
But the funkiest guitarist ever?
That’s Prince, my dude.
ʜɪᴛ ᴍᴇ ᴜᴘ ᴏɴ ᴛᴇʟᴇɢʀᴀᴍ ɪ ɢᴏᴛ sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ sᴘᴇᴄɪᴀʟ ғᴏʀ ʏᴏᴜ 🎉🎸🎸👆
I would have bet all of my lunch money for the entire week that you weren't going to say "he used to be in this band called...Chic". I'm an old and I can testify that they were on disco radio constantly.
Yeah . . . .Niles is real good... . .some new guys on the internet you might want to chk out are Josh Meader and Kaspar Jalily
Le Freak. Still Atlanta records bestselling song. According Nile Rogers.
