I was eight years old when this song was released. I'm not sure anymore but I think "San Francisco" was the first song I ever remembered all the lyrics to. In my opinion, Scott McKenzie still has the best contemporary male singing voice I've ever heard. That's not to take away from other great singers but he proved that you don't have to sing at full volume or close to shouting to make an impression. Beautiful song too. - J
My teenage sister and her boyfriend moved there about then. I was only seven years old at the time, but I knew something special was going on there. We lived about ninety minutes from The City and she'd show me pictures she'd taken of the concerts and hippies. Even today with her pushing 70 she tells me stories about life in San Francisco during the Summer of Love (and beyond).
Even my mother loved, and understood, this song in Summer 1967 when I was 16 years old. .... I'm almost 68 and it means as much to me today as ever .... probably even more.

Sorry, I'll stick to the original . To me it's much better because there were o enhancememts, nor augmentations in those days. I was 10 years old when I heard this song back in late July 1967 , Summer of Love. Just over a month earlier The Monterey concert was going on with a plethora of rock groups. It wasn't as huge as WOODSTOCK ,but it was the sign of the times with the Vietnam War raging furiously on; my uncle would eventually lose his life their in mid March 1968 , the tail end of TET! I remember the 60s very well, mostly from 63( John F. Kennedy assasinated 11/22/1963 or 11/23/1963) to 72 when the whole turbulence of that time table occured!
That's Wrecking Crew session players Joe Osborn on bass and Hal Blaine on drums, Gary L Coleman played orchestral bells and chimes. Mamas & Papas songwriter John Phillips plays accoustic guitar, electric guitar and even a sitar in the song. But seriously, I never noticed the hand clapping before! McKenzie and Phillips were originally in a folk trio The Journeymen, along with banjo artist Dick Weissman. McKenzie played accoustic guitar on this song as well and sang double-tracked vocals. Phillips wrote this song with producer Lou Adler in 1966 and released the song in May of 1967 to promote the Monterey International Pop Festival.

Took an old school bus tour of SFO a few years ago, and I remember this song being on the speakers as we drove to the top of Twin Peaks. Once we were to the overview, this song was still in my head as I looked out over the city; the place with all that history, captured in my memory from a single vantage point - the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Hippy Hill, Haight/Ashbury, the Embarcadero, the Presidio, Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz etc...

We all knew these were the most exceptional artistic compositions we had ever heard at the time they came out but what we also didn't know was that they were the greatest music songs of all time. The music of the 60's and 70's blew away everything that came before it but nothing in the past 5 decades has been able to touch them. There was no place for SLOPPY AMATEURS and I might ad 'NO PLACE FOR GREAT PRETENDERS" either. The high standard of music(musicianship) has been abandoned and replaced with mundane racket on the airwaves today. We went from world class song writers, singers, musicians and performers to blatant talent mocking buffoons that are not fit to share the same airwaves of former masters and legends of rock. They could never equal alone rival the musical acts of the 50,'s 60's and 70's and I blame the recording studios for allowing these tone deaf amateurs, great pretenders and classless freaks who have pulled down the entire music industry to their own mediocre level! When everyone is a star, no one is! When everyone is a musician, no one is! What we have today is a complete dumbing down of the music industry. The entertainment industry has been hijacked by people who have no knowledge or appreciation for what real music is! Today's music is a non melodic, rancorous mass of noise produced by great pretenders who should be ashamed of themselves and seek another area of employment.
Spot on. My family and I were digesting what the difference is between that era and later years. The newer music can be fun - but does not typically carry musical weight. E.g. Pink Floyd's "Pleasantly Numb." The orchestration and harmonies are really good. There is real gift in writing this way. Music then had depth and soul in it. Music like from Led Z. Many tunes are so re-listenable. No so, typically, now. Scoring, orchestration, content, and body make for a memorable and always-wow piece. Many were gifted with great variety (Beatles) showing musical acumen. Inspiration - a key element that is lacking now. Many songs were simple, yet carried depth. Gone.
I absolutely love this song!! It is truly an anthem. My understanding is that John Phillips originally wrote this for the Mamas & Papas but decided to give it to his good friend Scott McKenzie. The song San Francisco is a awesome and excellent song. It is a song from the 60's or 70's. I love this song and added it to my playlist and it's a amazing song.
First time to visit USA, the plane landed in San Francisco, riding an Uber taxi towards our destination, I was singing this song, to the amusement of the driver.
At the time that it was out I never really noticed how haunting the song is. Maybe that's something you notice more years later when you're remembering those times, times that are now gone forever.
I just posted about the same as you said....Kenn's download and age makes me feel like this is the first time I have ever really heard it....What a time that was, we were so blest to have been part of it...
Barbara McNair also sang a rendition of this song as an intro to the detective movie "The Dirty Profession" which starred her, Harry Guardino, Dean Jagger, Ina Balin, Dina Merrill and Jack Carter. If it's on the net, Check it out.
I only had 2 feet and a bicycle for transportation, worked part-time jobs from the age of 11, bought my own school lunches in High School, didn't have any computers, video games, tablets, or a car. But I did have records, a record player, and an AM Transistor radio. The woods and streets were my ''playground'', so to speak. I ate wild blackberries and drank water from a garden hose, and I survived.
This song is one of the greatest ever sung and that is due in part to Scott, he just added that special thing that still makes you cry when you hear it.Hippies were so tortured by society but they never hurt anyone like the animals today.

Oh wow, heavy! Like, I didn't know there were even 262 countries on this planet. Groovy.
Wow this song sends chills up my spine Epic
The song San Francisco is a awesome and excellent song. It is a song from the 60's or 70's. I love this song and added it to my playlist and it's a amazing song.
First time to visit USA, the plane landed in San Francisco, riding an Uber taxi towards our destination, I was singing this song, to the amusement of the driver.
Great job, dude. I can even hear the backing vocals that I never heard before.
This is why I frequent You Tube so often!
great job on one of my all time favorites
Brilliant sound, terrific graphics - great job!!
All I can say is this that good old memories
Amazing thank you so much x
Good job with the enhancement!
At the time that it was out I never really noticed how haunting the song is. Maybe that's something you notice more years later when you're remembering those times, times that are now gone forever.
Quasarville Nights I couldn't agree more. This song always makes me feel sad for the days long past
Excellent observation! ^^
Quasarville Nights times won't gone if we in heaven...pls ask @catsteven 😍😍😍
I just posted about the same as you said....Kenn's download and age makes me feel like this is the first time I have ever really heard it....What a time that was, we were so blest to have been part of it...

This was-------honest to God-----------an anthem in that summer of '67. I know, cuz I was there. ----------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
I didn't see you.
Barbara McNair also sang a rendition of this song as an intro to the detective movie "The Dirty Profession" which starred her, Harry Guardino, Dean Jagger, Ina Balin, Dina Merrill and Jack Carter. If it's on the net, Check it out.

Kenn -----------The Anthem of the late 60's. Thank-you, again. -----------------I was there , & somehow I survived. --------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
John Phillips caught an entire era with this legendary song.
Great job !!! ありがとうございます。
Great sound, beautiful song, fine vid. Loved the adorable sexy psychedelic blonde blowing bubbles by the VW. Without a time machine, it's all gone.
Love Joe Osbornes great bass playing on this.
Feel very fortunate to have grown up in the Bay Area in the 1960s and 1970s. Its still a special place, but it was really something back then.
Supposedly, he was to join the Mamas and Papas but suffered a breakdown. Thank you, John Phillips, for the song. Wonderful re-working.
Nice mix on this 60's Hippie anthem classic.
Very well done!!
This song is one of the greatest ever sung and that is due in part to Scott, he just added that special thing that still makes you cry when you hear it.Hippies were so tortured by society but they never hurt anyone like the animals today.
I think Charlie Manson was the exception to your Hippies didn't hurt anyone idea ... but overall ... ya you are probably right:)
