Great experience to see him in Dub 1980 supporting Bob Marley when the Average White Band dropped out, A fantastic one off event, so glad I was there to see him, a fan ever since!
I was blessed to get to know Ronnie when he first moved to Austin, Texas back in 1986-87...somewhere in there. I was introduced to Ronnie by Jo Rae Di Menno, his personnel assistant at the time. Ronnie was a very warn and friendly person and, I couldn't tell by his friendly way, that at the time, he was really having to come to grips with MS. He was getting to where he couldn't walk very well. Bandmates would assist and sometimes carry him on to the stage. And from the stage, he could make you feel at home with his music/vocal mastery.. When he sang, his tone and 'phrasing' made each word... believable...he could put you in the song right along side the characters and places he sang about. I loved the guy. He was like you or me. Ronnie never let his legendary status get in the way of a good time. That's how I remember Ronnie. A smile came easy and he wasn't shy about taking on a conversation. Soon after I'd met Ronnie, Alejandro Escovedo invited me to join Ronnie's backup band called, 'Seven Samurai'. I would primarily play banjo and sing harmonies. During the six to eight month life span of the Seven Samurai, there was a constant changing list of players. Alejandro, Escovedo, Tim Kerr, Rich Brotherton, Bruce Hughes, Susan Voelz, Hector Munoz, Jody Denberg, Ron Erwin, Chris Hynes, a mandolin player who's name I can't recall, and myself, Dickie Lee Erwin. I remember a great, rainy night, Avenue D rehearsal, along with other rehearsals...learning Ronnie's songs... and then we had amazing shows. The ones that standout: Continental Club, guest, Bobby Keys at the Backroom and, Wavy Gravies concert: Cowboys For Indians at Manor Downs in 1987. Performing with a pro like Ronnie, made everyone in the band, a pro. The music was amazing. Unfortunately there is very little recorded of the Seven Samurai. I do have a rehearsal cassette...somewhere...stuck away.- dle
Thank you for sharing that with us. I’d love to have met Ronnie... he packed alot of living into his few years. It’s nice to know he was appreciated when he moved to Austin.
I'm late to this party in terms of leaving a comment but Ronnie Lane is one of the few artists who can make me cry. Such a beautiful voice. Everything he sings is heartfelt and it really touches you. So sad he went so soon.
The sad part of it all is, Ronnie wasn't Looking to make money by performing and playing his guitar. He was doing it because it brought him pleasure and enjoyment. It made him happy to have other people hear his music and also get that same sensation. If only there were more artists out there looking to just express who they are by using their music and not looking for the big bucks. I think the music world would be a heck of a lot better RIP Ronnie. That's the truth 💯
I'm in my late 50s and have found the music of Ronnie late. It feels like he's ridiculously underrated. His voice in this performance is achingly beautiful...and what gorgeous songs. He seems to have bucked quite a bit of convention in the music business...in a very heroic way. Big respect.
This is a working man's song. We work hard and fall in love more honestly and deeply than any other type of man on this planet. Bless Ronnie's cotton socks!
Ronnie smiles when he sings and his eyes twinkle when he smiles. What an absolutely wonderful talent. Gone but never forgotten. I cry when I watch this guy on here. Watch him at 7.52.
Nod’s as good as a wink was the first LP I ever bought, first year high school, 1971. The critics loved Rod - as we all did - but dissed the Faces albums. I’ve never forgotten some snoot’s description of ‘the rest of the record being ‘a few desultory Ronni Lane tunes’. Desultory! Took me years to learn he wrote it apparently about his old dad. Thought it was a beautiful but strange song to sing to a girl! And Rod’s entry is one of rock’s great harmonies. ‘Oh you were my hero …’
"Debris," is a wonderful song written by my friend Ronnie Lane, for his father, and is from the 1972 Faces album, "A Nod's As Good As A Wink." Ronnie Lane is accompanied in this video from 1974 by his band Slim Chance.
Yes. The "debris" is referring to the bomb sites left by the german luftwaffe of WW2. Market places would be set up in and around some of these sites where people would sell and barter products. He and his dad would go to these, his dad always "looking for a bargain".
The unsung hero of the Faces. I don't have many regrets in life, but one is never seeing Ronnie in concert. Lovely man who wrote great songs. Much loved.
I met Ronnie Lane and Slim Chance in 1974. His warmth and talent have never left me. We sat in his caravan swigging beer and eating cheese sandwiches with Billy Barclay.........perfect !!
kat Mats bicklesby1 arfer I can see what both of you are saying, having said that if any of us had wrote something like The Poacher i think we could die having left the world a much better place...and Ronnie certainly did
All I can say is...CLASS. Ronnie was an under rated artist in my eyes, and left behind some beautiful music. The driving force of the faces, and you can sense that Slim Chance were there for the music, and nothing else. Debris gives me goose bumps, and I like that feeling. Never forgotten, not by me anyway.
Every time you see Ronnie Lane play, it looks like the band is having great fun performing together. I don't think that's a coincedence. Brilliant, genuine, and significantly underappreciated.
Some great comments on this page. All saying the same thing about how good Ronnie was and just how people enjoyed his great music. I keep returning to his music. He enjoyed what he did and I suppose that is the most important thing in his short life. Well done Ronnie. The soul of the Faces.
Without Ronnie and his songs Rod wouldn't have been shit. Wasn't exactly being sought out by anyone after the Jeff Beck gig. He should be kissing the asses of both Ronnie's Lane and Wood.
18 years today since Ronnie left us. Seems a long time but his music survives him and gets better by the day. You keep finding new tracks. Good on you Ronnie. Gone but not forgotten: a true genius.
Debris was the b side to Stay with me by the faces. A Nods as good as a wink is a brilliant album. Ronnie Laine was a fantastic musician & song writer. Very sad that he was ripped off by the vultures in the music business back in the day. He is much missed
7 years since the last comment! I just saw Slim Chance at The Half Moon in Putney London UK. Special evening. They killed it. Just thought you should all know that.

There's so much that I love about this song but the saxophone solos are amazing - aren't they? I don't normally like saxophone solos but these are so expressive and I think the ending of the song is just perfect.
I lost my beautiful mum last year and the words looking for a bargain just gets me every time...she was an unmarried mother when she had me and the other lyrics "i wonder what you would have been without me hanging around just"....takes me to a time when i was a tiny little girl and how she struggled to keep me....we never get over losing our parents....im lost without her.... beautiful Ronnie..."The Keeper of the lantern"....Paul Weller...Thanks mum.x
A truly beautiful song, performed to total perfection. I don't think I've ever heard a better of this. The band and the mighty Ronnie are in gorgeous synergy. The saxophone playing is out of this world.
I dedicate this song to my own dad, Lawrence Thomas Ruisi, March 4th, 1929 to December 15, 1999. He was a native new yorker(Brooklyn born) and a Korean war vet. We hardly talked and I had so many questions. He died alone after a massive heart attack. I always felt like I was holding him back. I didn't continue this behaviour with my own son(19). we talk about everything.
I swear this is the best version of these two wonderful songs. Beats all the recorded versions any day , love the live version. You just get the feeling that Ronnie would play for free/busk whatever just cos he enjoyed it so much! Never heard debris before I heard this, struck a chord with me as my mum n dad always used to say "there and back to see how far it is " when I was little and pestering them about where they'd been.
one of my favorite songs i found on a faces single many moons ago...this version is absolutely beautiful and i love the sax - it really makes it into even more of a masterpiece
Thanks Ronnie for all the great music. You left us to soon. I cry to some of your songs, rock to your faces songs and love your small faces songs. You really gave a lot in a short time. Rip.
What a beautiful, poetic piece of art. My friend Paul turned me on to it a few years ago. Never left me and it feels as potent now as it did the first time.
After growing in my life I too had been there and back. And I know how far it is. I also learned after that not many can say that. Am grateful for that. In being alone is where I found my greatest strength.
Ronnie wrote so many great songs of real depth, and here are two of them. He should be better recognised than he is. I haven't seen this clip for years so it's been a real pleasure to come across it again. Beautiful stuff.

Stumbled on Ronnie Lane via Wes Anderson’s Rushmore, rendition here of Ooh La La is sublime. Imagine my surprise at Debris, with it’s heart-wrenching backstory: Ronnie’s dad was his hero, cared for his mom as she faced ALS. Later, same illness took Ronnie. Yet look at him here, playing on with his preternatural kindness: is there an artist who more exudes love? His wife joining later on-stage (doing the cancan) is perfect. Music on RUclips reminds how much beauty there is in the world. Ronnie Lane reminds how fleeting life is and what courage some rare souls show. Listener reactions remind how universal awe at touching music is. This is among the most beautiful, touching sets posted here.
There is nowhere near enough love and recognition for Ronnie.
Great experience to see him in Dub 1980 supporting Bob Marley when the Average White Band dropped out, A fantastic one off event, so glad I was there to see him, a fan ever since!
One the most lovely songs ever written.
Rod was such a wanker he wouldn’t let Ronnie sing this live with the Faces. Took attention away from him. Ian McClagan said so.
My heart aches when I watch this.
I couldn't agree more!

and part of the band Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle both Amazing song writers and performers
How many people under 50 even know of Ronnie, The Small Faces, Faces........and all the talent in those groups and ones like them.
Too few unfortunately
'Debris' is a song that we would all want to write for our dads. Heartbreakingly tender, and beautiful.
