Betty, I did too. I saw them on the British TV show Ready Steady Go, in about 1966,when British music was still sweeping the world, and was stunned. Cathy McGowan, the presnter, was giggling, and probably nearly crying, like the lovable fool she was. Never forgotten it, and there can't be many of their records I haven't heard since. And they can still bring me to tears.
Best duo of all time! Legendary! Phil and Don will never ever be forgotten! Wish I was born back in time....So I could see and hug you both...love you from the bottom of my heart
No words can adequately describe Don and Phil’s flowing, almost liquid vocals - their voices just slide perfectly into the next note every time - even on to the next line of a song, it’s just smooth, seamless, almost unbearably beautiful, harmonious perfection , underpinned by Don’s velvety, almost husky baritone. And doesn’t Albert Lee do a brilliant job on lead guitar.

This is just an ordinary song. UNTIL, that is, Don & Phil apply their magic to it. At that point, it becomes hauntingly beautiful. I still get goose bumps every time I hear their rendition. And having the incomparable Albert Lee backing you on guitar doesn't hurt, does it? I love how the lads retreat to the shadows so that Lee and the other lads can have their way with the backing music. It sets the stage beautifully for them.
Did Knopfler write the song specifically for them? I was unaware of that, although when you listen to their peerless blends, someone had to have them in mind when he composed the tune.
