    Mark Knopfler looks at Chet Atkins like a kid would look at Santa. The admiration and appreciation is obvious. Even though Knopfler has carved out his own niche in the music world, it's still humbling and nice to see such respect for one of his icons and guitar heroes. A beautiful song made even more so by the vocal brilliance of the Everly brothers, Mark wrote it but the EBs took it a level higher.

  • @DM-hk4cw

    Mark has zero ego. You would never guess he wrote this masterpiece and his original version is over 8 minutes long. He just enjoys the company of fellow musicians and appreciates each one's talent: you can see it in his face. The Everly Brothers influenced his own music and he and Chet were close friends. Wonderful video.

    • @fenwayify
      @fenwayify 2 года назад +27

      We don't have to oversell Knopfler. He is a fabulous artist and does subordinate his play in service to the song, but he is a human being, just like the rest of us. Also, you need to have some ego to be healthy; you just want balance. From what I see, he has a love of music that has no bounds and has dedicated his life to it. He is amazing to watch as he practices his craft and reveals it to an audience...

    • @glenscott5118

    In 1958 when the Everly's released All I Have to do is Dream, I thought it was one of the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard••••• and I was only 10 years old. I didn't even know what you called it then but I somehow recognized at the age of 10-- as a non-musician-- that their voices melded together like no others. I can't believe at the time of this recording that you're listening to, that those two Brothers still had the ability to harmonize in such a beautiful weaving together of their voices. They still had it! Despite all the years of discord between the two of them. As an old man of 75, it almost seems like they are a Channel for Beauty coming from somewhere on high.

    The Brothers were at loggerheads with each other but kept it professional at performances. Mark and Chet gave each other a knowing look. The magic was working. Don and Phil turned to each other, and in that look said, "I love you brother".

But it does get better, of course there is the greatest, Stairway, but go listen to Ten Years Gone, or listen to the greatest female voice ever, Judith Durham. Now that I've taken the Micky, in all honesty, to say it doesn't get better, or to use the term greatest is pure bullshit, music isn't a competition, it isn't a ranking, it's very personal and subjective. Let's leave it at the opening, this is a masterpiece.

      Knopfler actually wrote the song with the brothers in mind. The original version is on Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms album. Mark and Chet were great friends and collaborated on a bunch of projects. This one was definitely special.

    • @CB-xr1eg
      @CB-xr1eg 9 месяцев назад

      @@heatherkelly2580 No. It was written for the Dire Straits album Brothers In Arms. Mark had The Everly Brothers in mind when he wrote it but it wasn't written for them. If you want a song that *was* written for them, try, On The Wings Of A Nightingale, written by Paul McCartney.

    • @RobbenRomano
      @RobbenRomano 5 месяцев назад

      @@CB-xr1eg Not surprising to hear it was written with them in mind. In addition to McCartney, I should think many musicians have been influenced by the Everly Brothers over the years. Simon and Garfunkel were at one time called 'Tom and Jerry' and based their harmonies on trying to sound like them. They went on to create their own distinctive sound, but the Everly-inspired harmonies were always there.
