You would never detect that from watching them live. They have always looked to be having great fun together and really enjoying themselves. That enjoyment rubs off on the audience, which augments the pleasure that you get from the great music they produce together. 😇
Mark! We don’t care how you hold the guitar! We care about how it sounds! And it sounds heavenly masterful! Thank you so much for your music! Love from Sweden! ♥️🙏🏻🤗🇸🇪
For some he may not technically be the GOAT, but the feelings he transforms through his guitar are unreal and unparalleled to any other guitarist I've heard so far. And I've heard a lot. Knopfler's guitar speaks directly to the listener's heart. Brothers in arms is a brilliant example.
Agree. My favourite guitarists are Mark, Martin Barre, Brian May, Gary Moore and Phil Manzanera. All have the ability to be so entertaining to listen to.
I saw Mark live as a solo artist at London's Royal Albert Hall in 2015 - great gig and performance and seems like a really nice guy too - thanks for uploading.
He's being extremely modest. Very hard to emulate. I've played for 40 years and can cop just about anything - but he has a magnificent deft touch that few can pull off.
As a young teenager I also stood at the guitar shop window watching the Les Paul Artisan going around on a turntable. Must be thousands of us out there, lucky enough to see Mark in the Grove pub in Leeds, I think he named his studio after that pub.
A very lovely man…unmistakable talent…so humble…+ glorious to listen to his conversation which equals the calibre of his music. And…it pleases me as an amateur vocalist myself + the same age as Mark…that my voice is still as powerful as his glorious playing is… which proves…age really is…only a number!
MK lyrics are up there with Dickens, Shakespeare and co only MK put his to music at their peak Dire Straits were just epic live one in a generation and the soundtrack to my life.
Ability to convey beautiful stories through songs. Ability to write memorable guitar interludes and solo's. Ability to sing and play the lead guitar at the same time. Ability to sell records. There's a handful of these guys who are blessed with these abilities. Mark is a diamond in the dirt and the grime. A G.O.A.T. enjoy him while he is here, there will never be another.
Speaking as a Geordie …He is my favourite Geordie..I’m not that sure he’s a huge football fan ( not everyone in Newcastle is ) but it’s so nice that he’s never forgotten his roots …great man.
He is among the greatest without a single doubt. I like so much things about the way he plays the guitar. Just to mention one song...I like very very much what he does in the last two minutes of "Single Handed Sailor" from Dire Straits. Communique album.
He is certainly one of the greats, but ranking guitarists is nonsense, how do you begin to compare the different styles and genres, in the end it comes down to the sound that people like, and Mark has a sound that is unique to him and beautiful to listen too.
Its wonderful to see all the positive comments about this national treasure mark knopfler. He has touched alot of people and has been a torch during hard times for many including me. The most expressive, most soulful, most beautiful. A master of less is more. Every note has value and when he leaves a note out its for a reason. He is a genius theres no other word for it.
Good for Mark, he knows there is no such thing as "the best" whether that's guitar, drums, keyboards or any other instrument. Mark Knopfler is one of my favourite players along with people like Jeff Beck and Alan Holdsworth and many other supreme guitarists. None of them would ever say they were the best even though many other people, usually non players say they are.
I always got the impression from his early videos that his little smiles were expressions of slight embarassement at being so lauded for being so good.
It's a foolish debate. I put Knopfler near the top of my list because of his incredible unique style of guitar playing and songwriting. He's in a class by himself.
Mark’s style of playing,to me,is exquisite. When I first heard ‘Sultans of Swing’ I stopped in my tracks till the last notes ebbed away.. I still do when hearing it.
One of the best people one of the best talents. What a guy. The world is a better place because of Mark Knopfler. He's the man, and I love him and wish the best in everything for him❤ Great interview too.
Mark Knopfler is definitely up there, but I am glad to see that he has humility. I saw him perform at Radio City with Dire Straits way back in the 1980s, and he and the band were incredible, modulating into songs sans stopping. It was one of the best concerts I have witnessed to date. Thank you, Mark! You keep me plugging away as a singer/songwriter/recording artist.

I'm so skeptical of celebrities, but there's always been something un-celebrityish about Mark Knopfler that makes me like him, and he really seems genuinely humble here.
You would never detect that from watching them live. They have always looked to be having great fun together and really enjoying themselves. That enjoyment rubs off on the audience, which augments the pleasure that you get from the great music they produce together. I was lucky to see them 3 times and always left with a big smile on my face and a tear of pleasure in my eye!
One of the best story tellers music has ever had
He's being extremely modest. Very hard to emulate. I've played for 40 years and can cop just about anything - but he has a magnificent deft touch that few can pull off.
Such a nice guy - and certainly a great guitarist!
So modest...most of the best and influential musicians are British.
Like Bill Nelson of Be Bop Deluxe.
As a young teenager I also stood at the guitar shop window watching the Les Paul Artisan going around on a turntable. Must be thousands of us out there, lucky enough to see Mark in the Grove pub in Leeds, I think he named his studio after that pub.
You are up there with all the greats!!🎸🎸🎸
A very lovely man…unmistakable talent…so humble…+ glorious to listen to his conversation which equals the calibre of his music.
And…it pleases me as an amateur vocalist myself + the same age as Mark…that my voice is still as powerful as his glorious playing is…
which proves…age really is…only a number!
MK lyrics are up there with Dickens, Shakespeare and co only MK put his to music at their peak Dire Straits were just epic live one in a generation and the soundtrack to my life.
It`s my strongly held opinion that the alchemy live concerts were the peak of music history.
Thank you, Mark Knopfler, for being you - and no one else. Will play your music until I die.
Mark is a fun guy to watch play a guitar. He uses both hands very well when he plays.
My all time greatest musician. Absolute legend!!
What a nice ,humble and polite person! Lot s of "superstars" could learn from him!❤
Mark is a truly great guitarist. Until reading that title I had never even heard it suggested that anyone referred to him as the best.
Speaking as a Geordie …He is my favourite Geordie..I’m not that sure he’s a huge football fan ( not everyone in Newcastle is ) but it’s so nice that he’s never forgotten his roots …great man.
What a great humble Musician Mark is
He is among the greatest without a single doubt. I like so much things about the way he plays the guitar. Just to mention one song...I like very very much what he does in the last two minutes of "Single Handed Sailor" from Dire Straits. Communique album.
..."best" or not, Mark is definitely one of our FAVORITES...!
He is certainly one of the greats, but ranking guitarists is nonsense, how do you begin to compare the different styles and genres, in the end it comes down to the sound that people like, and Mark has a sound that is unique to him and beautiful to listen too.
Love listening to you Mark,I think your the best
That story around the 2:50 mark......very touching and Mark remembers too - great guy
One of the greatest guitarist... would rate him even better than say EVH ..musically marks solos tugged at the heart
EVH changed how millions played the guitar. You just can’t say that about Knopfler. No hate. Just a fact.
@@FYMASMD agree .. thats why i said musically mark always appealed to me than EVH .. but its music ..diff strokes to diff people ..peace
@@FYMASMDnah that was Tommy Iommi. Eddie was just fooling around, essentially.
Bill Nelson of Be Bop Deluxe.
Does the greatest guitarist exist? Like painters, they all have their different styles and techniques.
Absolutely this! There is not just one guitar god, there's a pantheon, and Knopfler is one of them.
Great interview. Love Mark’s humility. Was brought up on Making Movies. The storytelling on that album was like nothing I’d heard before.
Such a great guy, and certainly one of the greatest, if not the greatest, guitarist of all time.
it's sad to see that my heroes are getting older.... mark knopfler is one of the most melodic player that i've ever seen !
It's a foolish debate. I put Knopfler near the top of my list because of his incredible unique style of guitar playing and songwriting. He's in a class by himself.
All the greats have something unique from the first few notes they are instantly recognizable
and the same goes for him.
So humble!
Mark’s style of playing,to me,is exquisite. When I first heard ‘Sultans of Swing’ I stopped in my tracks till the last notes ebbed away.. I still do when hearing it.
It's true that trying to know who the best guitar player is is nonsense. Because the dice were loaded from the start: MK is the man.
One of the best people one of the best talents. What a guy. The world is a better place because of Mark Knopfler. He's the man, and I love him and wish the best in everything for him❤
Great interview too.
He could play my broom handle and make it sound like a Gibson or Strat
im happy that at his age he is not depressed and still enjoying lif unlike many other musicians he is very well balanced
My two nominations for best rock guitarist ever-wow, it's so tough-are Mark Knopfler and the late Peter Green.
Bill Nelson of Be Bop Deluxe.
Check out his latest release. Particularly like the song ‘Janine’ at the moment. 🎸
I love the solo at about 2.09 into that song.
