Great! I loved the knife tip. One tip that I learned years ago is to peel kiwis with a spoon instead of a knife. It's really helpful. Also, if you need to keep a piece of avocado without turning black, you can put it in a container with a piece of onion. :)

Another tip for peeling garlic: put a large knife flat of the clove and hit the blade with the back of your hand. Crushing the garlic breaks up the peel a bit and makes it easier

Looove the tip of grating ginger with a fork :) Another hack is to cut your ginger into thumb size pieces then individually wrap and store in the freezer. the next time you need to use it, for a chili or a curry for example, you can grate the frozen piece into the mix! I also individually wrap and freeze chopped cilantro so it doesn't go bad!

When we have an abundance of citrus, I juice and freeze using cute candy molds left over from my daughters candy making days. They make the best little ice cubes! Store and use as needed. Lemon water in the mornings, orange added to dishes. Both are amazing...one of my new favorite hacks.

Avocado tip: Same downward stroke with the knife, but have the avocado sitting on the counter instead of in the palm of your hand (I do this every night). I learned the hard way when I cut my finger, and I've seen people cut their palm open.

For easy removal just pinch with two fingers where blade enters seed. Falls right off.

      @johnallenii9279 4 года назад

Or just use a butter knife. That's what I always use and as long as you hit the seed hard, the butter knife will work wonders. Plus no fear of losing a finger.

for me i don't peel ginger ..i don't think it needs peeling..i just wash it, dry it , and use it ..another thing i do is that i freeze ginger as a whole piece and when i need some i just grate it ..grating is so much easier when frozen and it doesn't stick to the grater...

didn't know about knife sharpening tip. For large amounts of peeling garlic, I preheat oven to 200F, apply few drops of oil to cloves of garlic, put it in oven for 5-7 mins and take it out. voila! peeling will be so easy. This tip is helpful if you want a paste of garlic, which speeds up meal prep later.

Hi Sadia, the ceramic cup back is also very common in my country. I just want to remind it is a method to realign the cutting edge and cannot sharpen the very blunt blades. But, if you use it in the daily basis it increases the life time of a well sharpened blade.

Another garlic hack: After peeling that garlic, store the cloves in the freezer, they are milder that way, I usually use it in cooking (as opposed to raw) and they soften up very well after thawing. How to thaw? Put into that hot water or broth you're using to sauté those onions. What, you're not sauteing onions? Then use water to sauté your garlic. No oil really needed. PUL, love your presentation and crisp videos, keep up the good work!

Not only is smashing the garlic an easier way to get the peel off (especially when you need it NOW), but I read a few years ago a study that claimed that smashing the garlic before cooking it helped preserve the enzymes in the garlic better.

Also, I learnt from the forks over knives- engine diet documentary (can’t remember the exact name) but Rip teaches you that you can cook without oil with mushrooms and onions, that they release oils as they cook meaning they don’t stick as easily :) just sauté them first before adding other vegetables.

There are plenty ways for peeling garlic, one way is to put them in hot water for a couple of minutes or another way is to crush them and the skin comes off right away.

I like to peel my ginger and keep it in the freezer. Whenever i need it, i take a piece out and grate while still frozen. Works perfectly.

garlic, u can put a knife in top and give it a whack, it partially smash the garlic and the peel come off, after you get your garlic, you can placed inside a bottle filled w oil, the oil get infused w it. you can use the oil to cook or for top something as salads, bread.

Massaging kale is key! Awesome that you shared this tip. I teach clients to massage it with the vinegar dressing already on it so that the acid helps break down the cell walls.

You do not need to peel ginger, the skin is edible too.

For the avocado tip! I would add that to get rid of the seed on the knife you should push the seed out from the blade and not try to pull it. This is more a caution tip than a true tip but a sharp knife won't make the difference between four fingers an the seed!
    Loving your content! keep sharing!

I already knew most of these, but this kind of video is great! Please keep it up. I will definitely use the mug trick next time I'm at a house without a honing steel. And not to be pedantic, but there is a difference between honing and sharpening. Honing simply realigns an already-sharp blade, which is useless if the blade is blunt. If someone tries to "sharpen"/realign their knife on a ceramic or steel surface and it doesn't improve, it needs to be sharpened (no air quotes) to create a new edge. You probably already know this, but as it is a limitation to the mug hack I thought I should clarify for others in the comments who may be unaware.

Love it. You’re so pretty! In Puerto Rico crushing the garlic with a knife and peeling the ginger with a spoon are fairly common household techniques. The knife thing was a surprise but I wonder if it can damage the mug 😂

thanks for sharing! I wish to add about cutting avocado. Instead of chopping into the seed, we can cut the other half of the avocado with seed into quarters. This way the seed can be peeled out easily from the last quater of avocado. This idea comes from Ochikeron.

Kale, I use the hole in an spaghetti spoon/fork (the one you use to portion the spaghetti) to take the stems of the kale, you put the stem in and pull, it is easier and faster
