Dear Roomba-Engineers… here are some requests based on my experience … please implement the following functions:
a) live-mapping in the app.. the competitive is doing this well (unofficial dorita980 works fine)
b) room recognition and explicit room/spot delegation/cleaning (litter in front of cat toilet needs to be cleaned up several times a day)
c) cliffsensors on/off (sensors not necessary in my environment - extend the app please)
d) user-adjustment of bump sensitivity (roomba drives over my swingchair like a tank)
e) deactivate the vacuum while returning to base
f) slow down the rotation of the sidebrush (or let adjust it by user - roomba is playing baseball with debris)
g) add homebase button to app (while cleaning???)
h) randomize the room sequence or let set it by user (see b.) roomba drives always the same pattern
i) let roomba recall his environment permanently and let him adjust only to the changes.. roomba forgets all after 90mins. (Uhh... Daddy has placed me in a room… Which room is it? I forgot! Where is my docking station? I don´t now.. Letz find out and ride the whole apartment again.)

I just bought the 981 and none of these features (some of them really easy fixes) have been implemented.
Definitely ignoring. 2 years after the comment, still none of the functions are available. There are many other brands who can do that...
@@irobot you have to say thanks to few hackers otherwise as your software are quite simple instead of the other competitors...I do have a 900 series and thanks to dorita980 I am not going to give back my roomba...the xaomi is cheaper and the software is amazing! take it as good example
and please do not just "hear" but put the live position, it costs nothing and it's so possible....and you will have so so many more customers. Be smart

- Please turn off the vacuum when just navigating back to the homebase.

Late to this party but I bought a Roomba 981, which I called Dave, because I was fed up with all the tricky corners in my studio appartment, the yoga I had to do to get to the other side of the bed, etc etc. Also, I'm lazy and I like automated stuff.
Being late, though, does mean I get a product with has had some updates.
iRobot, I'm pleasantly surprised by your product! It does a better job at cleaning the stupid carpet (landlord refuses to renew or remove it) than my hand vaccuum and hardly ever gets stuck. The *only* problem is a rug I have under a table, which has a lot of black lines. The sensors dont like this. Other than that, Dave finds its way around and even takes a sneaky route under the couch to do its job throughout the room.
All the tricky spots Im too lazy to get to, Dave drives over with ease.
The dust-tray is rather small... or the carpet is just really dirty (I vote both) and a bit annoying to clean out.
All in all, I'm well happy with the vaccuum, its app, the way it navigates and the results.
Edit: question, the Roomba seems to learn the room. From the first bumpy exploration run onwards,it goes smoother and smoother. Is this true?

I have an earlier model and it does not act like this. I believe this is new to the 980.
It's is, I travels in straight formal lines around the floor plan, I have one. It also goes back to the sofa and chair legs after it finished the floors, and also does a perimeter clean around my entire house.
the 900 series takes on a more traditional row-by-row vacuuming style vs the randomized approach from the earlier models because it has a camera and self-awareness to where its been. The camera allows for it to see walls and overall rooms from far away vs the regular sensors that only sense walls from up close, and then randomly bounce off and go in another direction. This one actually knows where its been and where it started, so once its out of battery or bin is full it can return to home base to charge. Older models would randomly roam until they saw the docking home signal in sight

So do we get to watch its brain make the map in action on the app? That would be neat.

Almost every furniture is wide and -spaced far apart enough for Roomba to move through.
+AtheistGlitch It does not store the layout. It would be pointless. People move chairs all the time, drop items, pick them up, close doors, and occasionally move furniture. If it remembered the layout it could not trust it. Also, if you take it from one story to another, the floor plan is different. That said, unlike it's brethren, the 980 is very systematic about how it covers everything. I have an 880, and will be upgrading to a 980 this weekend. In my opinion, the 980 is the first model that is "ready for prime time".
Holy crap. This baby is much smarter than my roomba 870. My 870 walks a pretty random path and I am sure it has no idea where it is heading...

I have purchased the Roomba i7. It is very expensive so I expected a product that worked well. I fought with it for over a week trying to get the smart mapping function to work. When I called help they said just do a factory reset and try again. Much faster to put it back in the box and take it back. Not recommended!

+chandies This navigation is exclusive to the 980. The new Roomba 980 uses an optical mouse sensor under the robot and a camera on top to navigate.
+chandies the older versions only have the default 'drunk' mode. Works great, definitely going to miss that in this new one.

My house is massive, enough to flatten my 630 five times over to clean it all.
iRobot, I have to ask, will this keep cleaning my entire house or will I still need to use barriers to force it to clean small sections at a time?
The Roomba 980 (and Roomba 960) can clean an entire level of a home, up to 2000sq ft of floor space without the assistance of virtual walls or virtual lighthouses. So, yes, as long as there aren't any steps between rooms or large thresholds, the 900 Series will be able to do an entire level of your house.

Has anyone hacked the roomba yet so we can access the map while it is cleaning?!.. It seems stupid to me that they don't let you see where the roomba has been and your own home map...

+Paul Hi Paul... I believe these product reviews are/were from beta testers. The manufacturer will have a group of people to test the product before it is released to the public to get their opinion on it.
I, personally, have the 500 series. OLD technology (lol). But, up until the battery stopped charging (took 3 years), even this old technological dinosaur of a robot did an amazing job on my floors.
I'm finally buckling down and willing to invest in the 980 only because of my past experience with their original iRobot.
However, I could definitely understand your apprehension of purchase if the reviews seemed "purchased" or "swayed."
My opinion... and it's only my opinion based on experience... the products this company makes available to the public seem to get very positive reviews all around.

OK I have an million dollar idea why don't you make the roomba controlled by remote the person doesn't have to push it and gets everything in the house fast or connected to your cell or iPad cus look automatic doesn't work unless the AI is as smart as us so remotely is the way to clean efficient and effortlessly and if you'd like. switch to AI when you want.. Think consumers want to control the roomba also people want options what's better a roomba you can control or one you can't I only want 1%royalty for my idea don't worry it isn't a lot so just get back to me

Neato does not have a camera on any of their robots. You are mistaken.
It does not have a camera. It uses laser vision to track where it has and hasn't been. Neato has been doing this since the beginning. Buy yourself one of those. Not the new roomba. Neato is also at a lower price and runs with more power.
